On our 1–10 firmness scale, the Hybrid Comfort is a 7/10, which is on the firmer side of medium-firm. Keep in mind that lighter sleepers may feel this bed as firmer and heavier sleepers may think it has a softer feel.

What Does the Emma Hybrid Comfort Feel Like? 

The Emma Hybrid feels different from other mattresses I’ve tried. Instead of having a hugging, memory foam feel or even a slight cushion, it feels more like styrofoam—something with very little give. You’ll stay elevated on the mattress and experience a slight bounce when you move around and change sleeping positions.

Back Sleepers

The best mattresses for back sleepers are medium-firm and have enough cushion to hug the low back area. Average-weight back sleepers should benefit the most from Emma. It could also work for lightweight and heavyweight back sleepers, but it may be too firm for lighter folks and not durable enough for heavier folks.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers should look for a softer mattress that keeps the spine aligned and relieves pressure from the hips and shoulders. Emma does not have a cushioning feel whatsoever, but it relieves pressure well for lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight side sleepers. Stomach Sleepers 

Lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight stomach sleepers are the most compatible with the Emma Hybrid Comfort. The best mattresses for stomach sleepers are firm and provide very little sink because they need to keep their hips elevated on the mattress to keep the spine aligned. The only hold up? Heavyweight stomach sleepers may find it to be less durable.

Combination Sleepers 

I’ll get into responsiveness more in the coming sections, but Emma scored well and is easy to move around on. This is great news for combo sleepers of all sizes because they need a mattress that won’t make them feel stuck in the layers. Is the Emma Hybrid Comfort Mattress Cooling? 

Though Emma has no cool-to-the-touch cover or foams, I would still consider it to be a good mattress for hot sleepers. The foam layers are so thin that they most likely won’t hold on to your body heat. The construction mostly consists of breathable coils that facilitate lots of airflow throughout the mattress.

Edge Support

Edge support is a fancy mattress term that just describes how well the perimeter of the mattress can bear weight. This is an important factor for older folks and those with mobility issues because they rely on the edges to move in and out of bed. It’s also important for couples who like to sleep on opposite sides of the bed.

During our testing, we found Emma to have average edge support—it’s not the most solid support in the world, but you shouldn’t fall off the edge of the mattress.

Responsiveness

A mattress with good responsiveness allows you to move on the mattress with ease—whether you’re switching sleeping positions or having sex. The Emma Hybrid is very bouncy and easy to move around on, so we gave it a perfect 5/5 score for responsiveness.

Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?

Chances are, if you sleep with a partner, pet, or child, you don’t want to feel a single movement from their side of the bed while you’re sleeping. We test this by placing a beaker of water on one side of the bed and dropping a weighted ball on the other side. We look at the movement in the beaker to show how much motion is transferred across the bed.

After our motion isolation test, we gave the Emma Hybrid Comfort a 3.5/5 for motion isolation, meaning our results were pretty average. You’ll definitely feel some motion as your partner moves around and gets in and out of bed, but that motion shouldn’t be enough to wake you up—unless you consider yourself to be a light sleeper.

Noise

During mattress testing, we noticed Emma did make noise as we moved around on the bed. It sounded crunchy and a bit squeaky—sort of like a plastic couch cover.

Pain Relief

Considering this bed is so firm and there isn’t a lot of cushion on the surface, we were surprised to see great results in our pressure relief test. Our pressure maps showed great body weight distribution for side sleepers of all sizes and no pressure buildup in the low back for back sleepers. This means though it may not be as comfortable to some, it’s a good option for hip, shoulder, and back pain.

Sex

A good mattress for sex is cooling, quiet, responsive, and durable. Emma checks about half of those boxes—it’s bouncy and breathable—which are the two most important factors. This should be a good option for you and your partner.

Off-Gassing

Off-gassing is the chemical smell you may experience after unboxing a mattress that contains memory foams. It is not harmful; it’s just unpleasant. We definitely experienced off-gassing after unboxing Emma and it lasted for a few days before dissipating. I recommend you air this bed out in a ventilated room for at least two days before adding on your sheets.

Durability 

Though hybrid mattresses are the most durable kind (thanks to the supportive steel coils) Emma is not the most durable hybrid I’ve ever encountered. The edge support isn’t as solid as it could be and the foam layers aren’t very thick. I’d estimate this mattress will last you about seven years before it begins to show signs of wear and tear.

Emma Hybrid Comfort Mattress Construction: What’s it made of?

Construction is the foundation of a good mattress performance, so we cut into the Emma Hybrid to get a good look at each layer and see how they inform performance. Quick note: don’t try this at home or you risk voiding your warranty.

Cover: The cover of the Emma Hybrid is soft to the touch and breathable.

Breathable foam: Made of the brand’s patented AirgocellⓇ technology, this layer of foam is supposed to pull away excess body heat and keep you from overheating.

Memory foam layer: The memory foam promises to conform to your body’s shape in any sleeping position.

Support foam layer: This layer is responsive and supportive, keeping you elevated on the mattress surface.

Zoned pocketed coils: The main support layer is made of individually wrapped coils that add support, bounce, and breathability to the mattress. They have seven zones, which works to keep your body perfectly aligned.

Stabilizing base layer: One last layer of foam keeps the mattress stable.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

The Emma Hybrid Comfort ships free nationwide (minus Alaska and Hawaii) and takes about two to five business days. If you want to opt for in-home mattress setup, you could be charged a fee anywhere from $69–$129, depending on where you live.

If you don’t want white glove delivery, the mattress will be left at your door, compressed into a box. Grab a partner and unbox your mattress on the bed frame of choice.

Warranty

Emma offers a 10-year warranty that covers faulty materials and manufacturing defects. If you think your mattress is defective, contact Emma’s customer support team, and they’ll walk you through the claim-filing process.

Trial Period & Returns

Your mattress’s trial period is your window to make a free return. Emma offers you a 365-night sleep trial, which far exceeds the industry-standard 100 nights. During this year, sleep on your mattress every night like normal, except if you don’t like it, you can return it for a full refund.

You must have the mattress for at least 21 days before you can initiate a return because it takes that long to break in a new bed. After your return, Emma will confirm the return is complete, and you should receive a full refund in five to 10 business days.

The Emma Hybrid Comfort’s claims that it’s supportive and breathable are true. Overall, this mattress is best for stomach sleepers, hot sleepers, and folks on a budget, but it won’t be so great for those who want a soft cradling mattress, couples, and seniors.

Is the Emma Hybrid mattress worth it?

The Emma Hybrid mattress is worth it if you sleep on your stomach, sleep hot, or just enjoy a firm mattress. This bed comes at a very affordable price (around $600 for a Queen after discounts), and you have a full-year to try it before your free return window closes, so there’s very little risk.

Is Emma Hybrid softer than the original?

The Emma Hybrid is not softer than the original—it’s firmer. We gave it a 7 out of 10 on our firmness scale, meaning it’s not the firmest bed we’ve ever come across, but it is pretty firm. If you want a soft mattress, Emma may not be the brand for you—all of their mattresses are medium-firm.

Why is my Emma mattress uncomfortable?

You may find your Emma mattress to be uncomfortable because it is a pretty firm bed without much cushion. I compare the feel of the Emma Hybrid to styrofoam—it’s a bit hard with very little give. Firm mattress fans should enjoy this feel, but those who want to be hugged by their mattress will be disappointed.
