The GhostBed Natural and Avocado mattresses are both popular options when it comes to all-natural and organic hybrid mattresses. However, there are notable differences between the two that make them more suitable for different types of sleepers.
If you’re having trouble deciding between the two, you’re in luck. In this mattress comparison, we’ll go through everything you need to know about the two mattress brands — from firmness levels to construction differences — to help you decide which one is the best fit for your needs.
Want to know more about how we review and test out mattresses? Read up on our testing methodology.
Though both are popular eco-friendly mattress brands, the GhostBed Natural and Avocado mattresses differ when it comes to accommodating different types of sleepers.
Here’s a recap of who we think would most benefit from each mattress.
GhostBed Natural is best for… | Avocado is best for… |
Combination sleepers | Hot sleepers |
Couples | Back sleepers |
Eco-conscious shoppers | Side sleepers |
In this section, we’ll be talking about the similarities and differences between GhostBed Natural and Avocado mattresses.
When choosing a mattress, one of the first things you should consider is the firmness level. Depending on your dominant sleeping position, your mattress firmness could make or break your overall sleeping experience.
After some testing in our sleep lab, we used a firmness scale of 1-10 (with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest) to rate the GhostBed Natural and Avocado mattresses. According to our scale, the GhostBed mattress scored 6.5/10 which puts it at the medium-firm level. The Avocado mattress also got a medium-firm rating but is slightly firmer at 7/10.
Since the GhostBed mattress has a combination of latex and coils, it has an excellent level of support and a bouncy feel. Sleeping on it feels like the mattress is cradling you but without sinking into the layers.
On the other hand, since the Avocado mattress also uses latex comfort layers, it also provides a similar cradling feel. However, since the Avocado is slightly firmer, we feel that it’s more supportive for the back. Its organic wool and cotton cover also feels very soft, while its latex layers provide a temperature-neutral experience.
The GhostBed Natural’s latex foam and coil support core contours the spine and neck, making it suitable for back and stomach sleepers. Its springy coil system adds to its responsiveness and allows you to move around easily on top of the mattress. Though on the firm side, the GhostBed can also accommodate average to heavyweight side sleepers.
The Avocado mattress is recommended for back, side, and stomach sleepers since the level of the springiness of the mattress contours the part of your body that needs support. If you share your bed with someone, we recommend the Avocado Mattress since its individually wrapped coils can help in minimizing the movements of your co-sleeper throughout the night.
GhostBed Natural Performance By Body Type & Sleeping Position:
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 5 | 5 | 3 |
Average-weight (130–230 lbs): | 5 | 4 | 4 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 4 | 3 | 4 |
Avocado Performance By Body Type & Sleeping Position:
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 4 | 5 | 2 |
Average-weight (130–230 lbs): | 5 | 4 | 3 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 4 | 4 | 2 |
Both the GhostBed and the Avocado are recommended for average-weight back sleepers and stomach sleepers. They give the spine and lower back even support and prevent the stomach and hips from sinking through the foam.
For average-weight side sleepers, we think that the GhostBed is a better option over the slightly firmer Avocado, but some side sleepers may still experience some pressure in sensitive joint areas such as the shoulder and the hips. For better pressure relief, we recommend the ones on our list of the best mattresses for side sleepers.
Lastly, for combination sleepers, we recommend the GhostBed over the Avocado mattress since we felt that it’s more responsive to switching positions.
Heavyweight back sleepers can choose from either mattress since both the GhostBed and Avocado can provide adequate support to maintain a neutral spine alignment. But for stomach sleepers, we think the firmer Avocado is the better pick since there’s better hip support to prevent sinkage.
On the other hand, side sleepers will appreciate GhostBed’s softer latex layers as they may find the Avocado too firm to cushion their sides. Both mattresses may be good options for combination sleepers, but that depends on their dominant sleeping position.
Lightweight back sleepers will probably sleep well on both mattresses. However, the slightly softer GhostBed Natural will feel more comfortable than Avocado. For stomach sleepers, both mattresses are great choices since they’re firm enough to maintain a neutral spine alignment and prevent any excess sinkage.
Side sleepers will probably prefer GhostBed Natural over Avocado since they may feel that the latter is less cushioning and too firm. Despite both being responsive, we think combination sleepers should go for GhostBed Natural as its softer feel feels comfier to move around on.
The GhostBed Natural is a 12” hybrid mattress, while the Avocado mattress stands at 11”. Aside from their mattress thickness, here’s how each mattress differs in construction.
GhostBed Natural Mattress Materials | Avocado Mattress Materials |
Organic Cotton Layer | Organic Cotton and Wool Cover |
2” Natural Wool + Natural Talalay Foam Layer | 2” Natural and Hypoallergenic Dunlop Latex |
– | 1” Dunlop Latex Transitional Layer |
8” Pocketed Coil System + 1” Dunlop Latex Layer | 8” Pocketed Coil System |
Both the GhostBed Natural and Avocado mattress covers use organic cotton (plus wool for the Avocado) layers that are super soft, breathable, and free from harmful chemicals and toxins.
GhostBed’s comfort system combines natural wool and natural Talalay foam to provide a super soft sleeping layer that excels at regulating temperature. On the other hand, Avocado uses Dunlop latex that’s known for its hypoallergenic properties and body-contouring features.
GhostBed uses an 8” pocketed coil system with a 1” Dunlop latex layer, while Avocado only has an 8” pocketed coil system.

Hot sleepers, listen up! We found both mattresses to be very cooling thanks to their inherent temperature-regulating features.
The GhostBed’s latex layers are naturally cooling and are complemented by its breathable pocketed coil layer, which promotes airflow through the mattress. Similarly, Avocado’s airy and breathable latex comfort layer is matched with a moisture-wicking wool top. Overall, hot sleepers should sleep comfortably on both mattresses.
Motion transfer should be one of the first things you should look for in a mattress, especially if you’re co-sleeping with someone. A good mattress with excellent motion isolation will prevent you or your partner from waking up, even if the other tosses and turns in bed.
Fortunately, both mattresses have great motion isolation properties. Both mattresses have individually wrapped coils which help minimize motion transfer on the mattress.
In terms of edge support, both mattresses scored fairly well. They both have reinforced edges that prevent any sagging or indentation, even if you sit or lay down on it for a long time. And thanks to the strong edges, we didn’t have any trouble getting in and out on both mattresses.
Pressure relief is a mattress’s capability to alleviate pressure off certain body parts to prevent any discomfort or pain.
Since both mattresses fall into the medium-firm level, don’t expect to get much pressure relief, especially if you’re a lightweight sleeper and/or sleep on your side. However, average-weight and heavyweight sleepers may fare better, as well as back and stomach sleepers who benefit from firmer mattresses.
Waking up without back pain is one of the most important considerations when choosing the best mattress for you. If you’re suffering from any kind of body pain, you’ll want a mattress with good pain relief to alleviate the pressure off the affected body part.
Generally, both mattresses perform similarly when it comes to pain relief. Those with back pain will sleep comfortably on either mattress. But those with hip and shoulder pain may want to find a more supportive and pressure-relieving mattress. We noticed a lot of pressure build-up around the hips, which can be exacerbated if you’re a side sleeper.
Mattresses are a long-term investment that needs to be durable and tough. Fortunately, the durable latex-and-coil construction of both mattresses makes both durable mattress choices. They also both have 25-year warranties that cover replacements and pairs.
GhostBed offers free shipping across the United States and paid shipping for orders to Alaska and Hawaii. They also provide a 101-day sleep trial period and a 25-year warranty for their mattresses, with the warranty covering free replacement and repair costs for the first 10 years.
Avocado provides free shipping and a 365-day sleep trial period. Same with GhostBed, Avocado mattresses come with a 25-year warranty.
The GhostBed Natural and Avocado mattresses are excellent mattress choices for eco-conscious shoppers looking for a supportive and responsive mattress. They’re both also great options for hot sleepers and couples looking for a motion-isolation mattress.
If you’re on a budget, you’ll find great value with the Avocado mattress. For back and stomach sleepers on the heavier side, we think the Avocado’s supportive and pressure-relieving latex foam layers will be a good match. But if you’re leaning towards the lighter side of the scale, we recommend you go for the GhostBed Natural instead.
No. According to GhostBed, they only use materials that are CertiPur-US approved and avoid toxic chemicals that are harmful to sleepers and the environment.
According to our firmness scale of 1-10 (with 1 being as soft as a feather and 10 being as firm as a tabletop), the Avocado mattress scores a 7/10, which puts it at a medium-firm level.
GhostBed is a mattress company based in Plantation, Florida. According to their official website, all GhostBed mattresses are manufactured in the United States.
