When you come across the Level Sleep Tri-Support mattress, please know that you’re sleeping on good science.

Level Sleep has been researching the science behind sleep for 15 years. The company started by first developing the Level Restore pillow, which was tested and approved by the medical director of the Sleep Medicine Center and the director of the Center for Human Sleep Research at Stanford University.

Backed by that vote of confidence, Level Sleep then gave themselves a task to construct the right mattress, one that would relieve the pain that comes from sleeping on the wrong mattress.

They took 10 years to develop the Tri-Support memory foam mattress, 10 years of tinkering to get the right mix of materials and firmness levels. In clinical trials, subjects reported that the mattress reduced pain by 56 percent.

“Tri-Support” refers to three different zones of firmness that contour differently to the torso (thoracic area), the back (lumbar area) and pelvic (hips) areas of the body.

It keeps the spine aligned and pressure distributed throughout the length of the mattress. Less pain means better sleep. Better sleep should mean more productive human beings.

The Level Sleep is made of memory foam.

The memory foam in the top layer of the mattress is made in an open cell construction and open means more airflow. The denser foam base is also breathable, as is the fabric cover. Good air flow means the mattress will not overheat. To what degree it actually keeps you cool, depends on personal preference.

The Level Sleep is built with three levels of firmness throughout the length of the mattress, each designed to accommodate different zones of the body. It is softer around the head, neck and shoulders where you need more contouring, firm along the torso where your spine is and medium firm to accommodate the curves of the hips and legs.

Edge support

One performance area where the Level Sleep might fall short is how well it supports you when you’re sitting on the edge of the bed. Edge support is important if you do like to sit on the edge of your mattress to chat with people or tie your shoes while you get dressed.

When a mattress has three different levels of firmness, it will be softer in some areas than others. Couples who do use the entire bed might find it a touch squishier on the sides. But you should weigh that potential glitch with how well it does other things, like keep your spine aligned or limit motion transfer.

Motion transfer

Speaking of motion transfer, the Level Sleep does a very good job of keeping everyone situated where they need to be in bed.

If you sleep with a partner, that means you won’t feel their movement on the other side of the mattress. You won’t be disturbed from your sleep when your significant other gets out of bed to do whatever.

The Level Sleep Tri-Support mattress is composed of two layers of foam that vary in firmness and density.

The top layer is the 3-inch performance layer made of open-cell memory foam. Think of that top slab as made up of three zones:

  • For the head and shoulders, the foam is soft to cushion the shoulders.
  • For the torso, the foam is firm so that it supports your lower back and side.
  • For the hips and legs, the foam is medium firm, which has enough give to cradle the hips to keep them aligned with the rest of the spine.

The bottom is a dense, sturdy 7-inch layer of high resilience polyurethane foam.
