Is the Polysleep Origin Mattress for You?

Who’s Going to Love the Polysleep Origin Mattress

  • Back sleepers with lightweight (< 130 lbs) and average-weight (130–230 lbs) body types
  • Lightweight side sleepers and stomach sleepers
  • Budget-conscious shoppers
  • Those looking for a memory foam mattress feel with less heat retention

Who Should Steer Clear of the Polysleep Origin Mattress

This mattress is no longer available for purchase. To help you find your next mattress, check out our list of the best mattresses available on the market now.

Polysleep Origin Firmness and Feel

Polysleep Origin Mattress Firmness

We use a firmness scale ranging from 1–10 to measure the firmness level of each mattress we test. The Polysleep Origin has a medium-firm feel that falls around 6/10 on the firmness scale. This feel is typically best for back sleepers and lightweight stomach sleepers. It may also work for side sleepers, depending on the amount of pressure relief you experience on the mattress.

What Does the Polysleep Origin Feel Like?

The Origin feels dense, like pressing into a really thick container of Play-Doh. We noticed decent contouring around our curves coming from the top layer of the mattress, but the cushion is countered by the firm support layer.

Support and Pressure Relief by Sleeping Position

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers are the easiest kind of sleeper to shop for since their needs are met by a broad range of mattress types—all they require is decent pressure relief and support. They can go with all-foam, innerpring, or hybrid mattresses, and firmness levels ranging from soft to extra firm.

The Origin will work great for lightweight and average-weight back sleepers, but heavyweight folks won’t get sufficient support. Those weighing over 230 lbs will find better choices on our best mattresses for back sleepers roundup.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers need a mattress with pressure point cushioning and deep contouring around the shoulders and hips. We saw good pressure relief with our lightweight tester, but average-weight and heavyweight side sleepers should look for a mattress that’s softer and has more sinkage around joints. See the best mattresses for side sleepers for better options.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers need a firm mattress that keeps their hips lifted in alignment with their shoulders. This prevents the lower back from arching upwards, which can lead to back pain

Lightweight stomach sleepers should get enough support for good spinal alignment on the Origin, but average-weight and heavyweight folks will need a firmer mattress. For our top picks, see the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

Combination Sleepers

Combination sleepers should expect to sink into the top layer of foam on the Origin, but they won’t need to exert too much energy to change positions. Heavyweight sleepers will have the hardest time moving around, since they’ll sink deeper into the bed.

Lightweight and average-weight sleepers will have an easier time, but this is not the most responsive foam bed we’ve tested. For better options, see the best mattresses for combination sleepers.

Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  5 4 4
Average weight (130–230 lbs): 5 3 3
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  3 1 1

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Polysleep Origin Mattress Performance

Is the Polysleep Origin Mattress Cooling?

The Polysleep Origin isn’t distinctly cooling, but it’s not hot either. It’s made with open-cell foam and a breathable cover. As an all-foam mattress, it does retain some body heat, but it’s probably not going to cause the average sleeper to wake up drenched in sweat. Chronically hot sleepers should look for a more cooling mattress with better airflow.

Edge Support

We weren’t impressed with the Origin’s edge support. When sitting along the edges of the bed, we almost sank down to our bed frame. We felt more secure when lying along the sides of the mattress, but heavyweight sleepers may not feel very stable.

Responsiveness

When we talk about responsiveness, what we really mean is ease of movement. In other words, how easy is it to change positions on the mattress? The Origin offers moderate responsiveness, meaning you won’t work up a sweat getting from one position to another on the mattress surface, but it noticeably lacks the buoyancy of coils.

Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?

Couples are often on the hunt for a mattress that limits motion transfer, so this performance category is for them and anyone else who plans to share their bed. The Origin does an okay job of isolating motion, so it should work for the average pair, but super light sleepers may want better motion control. A good place to start is our best mattresses for couples roundup.

Noise

We didn’t notice any noise while testing the Polysleep Origin. Any creaks came from our bed frame.

Pain Relief

Back sleepers with average or petite body types should experience relief from back pain on the Origin, though stomach sleepers weighing more than 130 lbs should look for a firmer mattress. Side sleepers with shoulder or hip pain should opt for a softer mattress or one with better pressure relief.

Sex

The Origin isn’t our favorite mattress for sex, but it’ll do the trick. Normally, we recommend something with more bounce and breathability. The one feature the Origin has going for it in this category is noise: it’s perfectly silent.

Off-Gassing

You may notice a mild “new mattress smell” when you first unbox the Origin, but the odor is temporary. Give your mattress a few hours to air out before putting on your sheets. Also, Polysleep uses CertiPUR-US certified foams, so you don’t need to worry about toxins or harmful emissions.

Durability

The Origin is not a particularly durable mattress. Foam beds are prone to developing body impressions over time, and Polysleep only warrants this bed for five years, which gives you a sense of how long they think it will last.

With that in mind, the Origin is best as a “starter bed” for college students or recent grads. It could also work for kids, guest rooms, or shoppers looking for a “stand-in” bed before investing in a long-term mattress.

Polysleep Origin Mattress Construction: What’s it made of?

The Origin mattress has a simple, two-layer construction. Both layers are made entirely of foam and measure a total of 8” tall. This mattress height is best for those under 230 lbs. The medium-firm feel of the foam works well for back sleepers and lightweight side or stomach sleepers

Moisture Absorbant Cover: The mattress cover is made with polyester and viscose—both synthetic fabrics that are breathable and moisture-wicking.

Antimicrobial Viscoelastic Hybrid Foam (2.5”): The comfort layer is viscoelastic “hybrid foam”—it’s called “hybrid foam” because it’s both viscous (thick and dense) AND elastic (it returns to its original form after weight is removed).

Viscoelastic foam is often another term for memory foam, but Polysleep says their proprietary foam is designed to be more responsive than traditional memory foam. This means it will bounce back to its original shape faster.

At 2.5”, this layer will provide some body contouring, but probably not enough pressure point cushioning for the average side sleeper.

Support Foam (5.5”): A supportive foam base layer keeps the mattress stable and prevents the spine from curving out of its natural alignment.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

Polysleep is a Canadian bed-in-a-box company headquartered in Montreal, so they ship for free to Canadian Provinces and the lower 48 United States. They ship for a fee to Canadian Territories and Alaska, but not to Hawaii.

See More: Best Mattresses in Canada

It takes around two to nine business days for your mattress to be shipped, and it’s delivered to your doorstep compressed and rolled in a box. It took us right around two minutes to get our Polysleep mattress unboxed and set up on our bed frame, but it was a few hours before it fully puffed up.

Warranty

The Polysleep Origin mattress is covered by a 5-year warranty that applies to the original owner. It starts when you buy your mattress and enables you to receive a free replacement or repairs if your original develops covered defects.

Polysleep includes a few specific defects in their warranty: body impressions deeper than 1”, splitting or cracking of the foam, and flaws in the cover’s zipper. Just make sure you use a supportive bed frame or box spring; otherwise, you could void your warranty.

Trial Period & Returns

Polysleep mattresses come with a 100-night sleep trial. To start a return or exchange, email support@polysleep.com. You’ll receive a full refund after your mattress is picked up by a charity (Polysleep arranges the pick up).

Addressing Polysleep Mattress Complaints

Causes Back Pain

A few users experienced back pain after sleeping on the Polysleep mattress. Mattresses can cause or aggravate pre-existing back pain, but that’s usually because it’s gotten too old.

If you’re experiencing back pain on a newer mattress, chances are it’s not a good fit for your sleeping position or body type. The Polysleep Origin is best for back sleepers under 230 lbs and side or stomach sleepers under 130 lbs. If that’s not you, consider a different mattress.

Not For Heavyweight Bodies

A couple of customers complained that the Polysleep Origin mattress wasn’t supportive enough for their body type. These were specifically folks with self-professed bigger bodies. We agree. At 8” tall, the Origin isn’t thick enough to adequately support sleepers who will sink deep into the foam layers.

Heavyweight individuals or couples should choose a mattress with a depth of at least 12”, preferably with a supportive innerspring or coil support layer.

Comparing Different Polysleep Mattresses

Polysleep Origin vs. Original Polysleep

This mattress is no longer available for purchase. To help you find your next mattress, check out our list of the best mattresses available on the market now.

The original Polysleep and Polysleep Origin mattresses both have antimicrobial foam top layers and high-density foam bases. The original Polysleep has an extra foam transition layer that gives it a slightly softer feel than the Polysleep Origin. The Original also offers more cushioning, so it’s better for side sleepers, but the Origin is more supportive, which makes it a better fit for back and stomach sleepers

Both mattresses do an average job of isolating motion and supporting sleepers along their edges. The original Polysleep has a foam support frame that’s designed to improve edge support, while the Origin does not. The original also has a liquid repellent cover (as opposed to a moisture-wicking one).

As for price, the Origin is lower cost, but it’s protected by a 5-year warranty, compared with the original’s 10-year warranty.

Polysleep Origin vs. Polysleep Zephyr

This mattress is no longer available for purchase. To help you find your next mattress, check out our list of the best mattresses available on the market now.

The Zephyr is Polysleep’s effort at a luxury mattress. It has four foam layers and nanobionic technology that they say aids in muscle recovery. The Zephyr has the softest feel of all the Polysleep mattresses, which makes it a good choice for lighter-weight side sleepers and back sleepers who like a plush feel.

The Polysleep Origin is the better option for stomach sleepers and those who want a firmer, more supportive mattress. It’s also more affordable, costing less than half the price of the Zephyr. Like the original Polysleep mattress, the Zephyr is covered by a 10-year warranty, while the Origin is warranted for only five years.

Comparing Polysleep to the Competition

Polysleep Origin vs. Tuft & Needle

This mattress is no longer available for purchase. To help you find your next mattress, check out our list of the best mattresses available on the market now.

The Tuft & Needle is another two-layer foam mattress with a medium-firm firmness level. It works for similar kinds of sleepers as the Polysleep Origin, such as back sleepers, lightweight stomach sleepers, and those looking for a balance of cushion and support.

During our mattress testing process, we gave the T&N higher scores for pressure relief and ease of movement, but the two beds scored similarly for motion isolation and temperature control. The T&N and Origin have almost identical prices, but the T&N has a 10-year warranty, compared with the Origin’s 5-year warranty.

See our full Tuft & Needle Mattress Review for more information.

Polysleep Origin vs. Leesa Studio

This mattress is no longer available for purchase. To help you find your next mattress, check out our list of the best mattresses available on the market now.

The Leesa Studio is also a two-layer foam mattress with a medium-firmness, though the Studio is a touch firmer than the Origin. Both are budget-conscious options aimed at college students and those shopping for an entry-level foam bed

The Leesa offers more pressure relief and does a better job of isolating motion than the Origin. It’s also more affordable and has a longer warranty (10 years vs. five years). Both mattresses come with a 100-night sleep trial.

See our full Leesa Studio Mattress Review for more information.

Polysleep Origin vs. Casper Element

This mattress is no longer available for purchase. To help you find your next mattress, check out our list of the best mattresses available on the market now.

The Casper Element is made from two layers of polyfoam, just like the Origin. It’s lower cost than the Origin, and it has a longer 10 year warranty, compared with the Origin’s 5-year warranty. Both have a 100-night trial period.

During testing, the Origin matched or outperformed the Element in all categories except edge support. If you want to maximize your mattress surface, go with the Element, but otherwise, the Origin is more pressure-relieving and easier to move around on.

Polysleep Mattress FAQs

Is the Polysleep mattress any good?

Polysleep mattresses are best for back sleepers who weigh less than 230 lbs. The original Polysleep and Polysleep Zephyr mattresses work for side sleepers under 130 lbs. The Polysleep Origin is the most affordable. Hot sleepers may want a more breathable mattress, like one with coils or extra cooling features.

What's the best Canadian mattress to buy?

The Polysleep is one of the best bed-in-a-box mattresses in Canada, but there are a ton to choose from many of which we've tested. A few more of our favorite Canadian mattresses are the Endy, the GoodMorning.com Douglas, the Silk & Snow, the Puffy, the Casper, and the GhostBed.

What's the best mattress brand?

We're fans of any mattress brand that offers their customers free shipping, free returns with a full refund during a generous trial period, and a warranty of at least 10 years. And of course, comfy, durable mattresses. Polysleep fits that bill, as do many other bed-in-a-box mattress brands.

The Nerd’s Take: What’s the Bottom Line?

The Polysleep Origin is your average all-foam, bed-in-a-box mattress. It didn’t particularly “wow” us during our testing process, and it probably won’t last you much longer than five or six years, but you get what you pay for: it offers decent pressure relief, temperature control, and motion isolation for couples.

The perfect match for this bed is a back sleeper under 230 lbs. We recommend looking out for Polysleep mattress discounts to get a price that’s comparable with similar basic foam beds on the market. And definitely take advantage of the sleep trial to make sure this bed is the right fit.
