The Mattress Nerd’s Take: Here at Mattress Nerd, we’ve seen a lot of mattresses shipped to our door, vacuum-packed and ready to expand. But the Sapphire Dream Luxury Plush mattress feels a little different from some of those ultra-modern, all-foam beds. This hybrid mattress, made of coils and memory foam, is thick, plush and reminiscent of a hotel mattress. And according to one of our reviewers, “it’s hard to believe it came in a box.”

Side sleepers who need cushioning on their shoulders and hips and other pressure points should love this mattress, as well as lightweight back sleepers. But if you’re on the heavy side, you might sink too far down into the plush layers to ensure adequate spinal alignment. Keep reading our mattress review to see if the Sapphire Dream Luxury Plush is the best mattress for you and your sleep needs.

Who is the Sapphire Dream Luxury Plush Mattress Best for?

Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  4 3 5
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 3 2 4
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  3 2 4

Back Sleepers

If you’re a back sleeper, your main mattress priority should be finding a design that supports your hips and shoulders and keeps your spine in alignment. That way, you stand the best chance of waking up without back pain or even neck pain. Customer reviews back up our extensive testing process: several real-life customer reviews have reported a decrease in back pain.

The Sapphire Dream is a medium-firm mattress that’s well-designed for back support. Because this mattress mixes the support of coils with an extra layer of plushness, back sleepers will likely feel as if their body weight is distributed quite evenly when they lay on the mattress.

Heavyweight back sleepers should feel at home on this mattress as well: its solid construction, thick layers and support coils make for a durable and supportive surface. In our mattress lab test, more lightweight back sleepers experienced a bit of pressure in the middle to lower back. Still, there was no pressure buildup around the neck or shoulders.

Bottom line: if you’re looking for a supportive, yet plush mattress that will keep your spine arched in the correct position, this mattress should work pretty well!

Stomach Sleepers

Hip elevation is key if you spend most of the night on your stomach. If your hips sink too far down into the plush comfort layer of a bed, your spine will have too much of a curve to ensure optimal all-night comfort.

Though this mattress tries to find the sweet spot between plush comfort and spine-aligning support, the high-density foam and coils might not offer enough support for the hips and thighs of stomach sleepers. Instead, look for a more firm mattress that will keep the heavier parts of your body from slumping down into the mattress. The Sapphire Dream Luxury Firm, the other model in this line, could offer the firmness needed to keep your hips elevated and your spine aligned.

Side Sleepers

Here at Mattress Nerd, we use a pressure mapping test to gauge whether a mattress presses down into certain parts of the body or distributes weight evenly, offering pressure point relief. We think the plush top of this mattress makes it a solid choice for most side sleepers, even though our pressure test showed a bit of pressure on certain sleepers.

For instance, during a pressure test on a smaller sleeper (around 130 lbs), we saw a bit of pressure on the hips. That extra sinkage caused a bit of a dip in the spine. For a larger-sized sleeper, there was a bit of shoulder and knee pressure evident in our pressure-mat test. Still, if you’re a lightweight sleeper you should expect pressure point relief and extra cushioning from this hybrid mattress. As with any mattress, if you’re looking for a bit of softness after the fact, you can always consider investing in a plush pillow-top mattress topper.

Moreover, everyone on the testing team really enjoyed the feel of this mattress. It has a plush layer that allows you to sink into its surface, and we could imagine coming home at the end of a long day and feeling fortunate to crash in this luxurious bed.

Combination Sleepers

As is always the case with combination sleepers, it’s important to take a hard look at what sleep positions you frequent throughout the night. Do you spend most of your time on your back and need adequate back support? Do you switch from your side to your stomach, in need of pressure point relief? This will all be important to consider when you’re trying to find a mattress that balances your need for plush softness and spinal support.

If you’re a combination sleeper who spends a lot of time on your side, we think you’ll feel comfortable on this mattress. It’s the most plush model in the Sapphire line, and it should make your hips and shoulders feel cradled and comforted through the night. This mattress is thick and plush enough to be good for all-night comfort. Larger side sleepers might experience a bit of resistance on the knee and hip areas, but lightweight and average-weight combination sleepers should definitely add this to their list of mattress options.

How Does the Sapphire Dream Mattress Feel?

Responsiveness, Bounce and Ease of Movement

The Sapphire Dream is a mattress that responds quickly to movement. While we tested the mattress in our lab, our team could feel some bounce and give to the mattress when we fell down onto it or even just turned over from one sleep position to another. Unlike a lot of foam mattresses, the coils in the Sapphire Dream give it that signature hotel-bed bounce factor. That also means, though there’s certainly a plushy feel to the top layer, you’ll find yourself able to move around and switch positions quite quickly. For combination sleepers who want an uninterrupted night of sleep, this ease of movement is imperative.

How Firm is this Mattress?

This mattress combines a few layers of medium-firmness with a plush, luxurious-feeling pillow-top layer. Though a mattress’ firmness will feel a bit different depending on your body type, that extra comfort layer pushes this mattress solidly into the middle of our firmness scale: around a 5.5. That means the mattress balances stability and softness, so that the body feels comforted, but not too comforted to the point of feeling out of alignment.

While the top layer of the mattress is made with ultra-plush egg-crate memory foam and another foam layer, several types of coils in the mattress provide spinal stability and – hopefully – help you avoid your chiropractor as much as possible.

Does It Sleep Hot?

Even through all the plushness, the Sapphire Dream is a great cooling mattress for three primary reasons. Its lower-level innerspring coils promote airflow, graphite-infused memory foam in the top layer allows for heat dissipation and a Tencel cover helps wick away moisture and body heat. If you tend to sleep hot and are looking for a breathable, yet comfy mattress, the Sapphire Dream is going to please you far more than a traditional memory foam mattress. This bouncy, breathable bed combines the support of innersprings with the comfort of a memory foam mattress, and the cover feels cool to the touch.

Is the Sapphire Dream Mattress Good For Couples?

If you sleep with a partner who tosses and turns throughout the night, or if your pet has a habit of jumping in and out of the bed, you know how important it is to find a mattress that eliminates motion transfer. The Sapphire Dream isn’t the absolute best at quelching that motion transfer, mostly because of its bouncy coils. That’s not surprising: memory foam mattresses are typically seen as the top motion-isolation choice.

Still, during our motion transfer test, one blindfolded mattress tester didn’t feel much when another Mattress Nerd got into and out of the bed. Unless you’re an exceptionally light sleeper who’s incredibly sensitive to late-night movement, you should sleep just fine with a partner on the Sapphire Dream.

How’s the Edge Support?

Thanks to a low perimeter of extra-reinforced, high-gauge coils in the Sapphire Dream, the edge support in this bed is stellar. It’s not enough to be uncomfortably firm along the edges – for instance, the edge of the Sapphire dips a bit when you sit on it – but our mattress testers felt perfectly supported when they laid on the very edge of the mattress. Edge support is an ultra-important aspect of finding a new mattress, especially if you have joint pain or trouble getting in and out of bed. If you sleep with a partner and want to stretch out to the very edge of your mattress, edge support is important as well.

Construction: What’s Under the Surface?

Layer #1: Tencel Cover

Tencel is a plant-derived fiber designed to keep heat and moisture away from the body. Because of the Tencel in the Sapphire Dream’s cover, we think that this mattress will help wick away heat and moisture. When we put our hands on the mattress cover in our testing lab, it felt cool to the touch: a good sign for hot summer nights – or if you happen to sleep hot even in the winter: we don’t judge!

Layer #2: Graphite Infused Memory Foam

Once again, the Sapphire Dream Luxury Plush shows its commitment to keeping you cool at night. Though memory foam isn’t known for sleeping cool, this mattress combines a luxurious and plush feel with a graphite infusion designed for extra cooling during the night. This layer of foam is cut into an egg crate design, which enhances airflow, and couples will feel grateful for this layer’s motion isolation properties: the material stifles motion so you feel as little movement as possible when your partner – or even a pet – shifts around.

Layer #3: Premium Soft Foam

If you find yourself waking up with aches and pains on your joints, a too-hard mattress could be the culprit. The extra layer of premium foam enhances the Sapphire Dream’s “plush” and cushioning feeling to prevent that kind of unwanted pressure and pain. That’s why side sleepers are likely to feel supported and cradled in this bed, especially on heavier parts of the body like the hips and shoulders.

Layer #4: Everlasting Support Coil and Sapphire Edge Reinforced Coils

Compared to all-foam mattresses, innerspring beds like the Sapphire Dream Luxury Plush tend to last longer and have enhanced breathability and airflow. If you buy any mattress that combines the springiness of coils with the comfort of foam, it’s far more likely that the foam will ever wear out than the coils. In fact, that’s why the individually-wrapped coils in the Sapphire Dream are called “everlasting.”

Moreover, the Sapphire Dream Luxury Plush includes thicker gauge coils around the outside edge of the mattress to enhance edge support, so you won’t feel like you’re about to fall off the bed if you sleep close to the side. The entire coil system in the Sapphire Dream is compatible with adjustable bases.

Layer #5: Stabilizing Base Foam

This layer of CertiPur-US certified, high density foam is designed to keep the coils in place and enhance the durability of the mattress. It’s the firmest foam layer found in the bed, and it lies directly underneath the coils. You won’t be able to feel that foam directly, of course, but it should give you extra peace of mind that the coils on the Sapphire Dream are exactly where they should be.
