In this comparison, we’re looking at two popular bed-in-a-box mattresses: the DreamCloud and the Purple mattress. The DreamCloud is a luxury memory foam and coil hybrid bed that is suited for back sleepers and stomach sleepers under 230 pounds. The Purple Original mattress is a gel-memory foam bed that uses a unique grid-like comfort layer to provide deep pressure relief.

DreamCloud vs. Purple Overview

The Dreamcloud’s hybrid construction makes it breathable and provides firmer support for heavyweight sleepers. The Purple is less expensive, and its grid construction gives it a balanced feel, where the bed supports you while also cradling your joints and pressure points, making it a great pick for side sleepers.

Who Should Choose the DreamCloud Mattress?

  • Couples: The DreamCloud bed provides strong motion isolation, so you won’t feel your partner toss and turn at night.
  • Hot sleepers: The innerspring coil layer of this bed allows air to flow through the mattress to keep you sleeping cool.
  • Heavyweight sleepers: Layers of coils and supportive foam provide enough pushback to keep heavier sleepers propped up comfortably on top of the mattress.

Who Should Choose the Purple Mattress?

  • Memory foam sleepers: If you like a soft foam feel, you’ll want to opt for the all-foam Purple over the hybrid construction hybrid of the DreamCloud.
  • Lightweight sleepers: The Purple provides an ideal blend of support and comfort for sleepers with more petite body types.
  • Side sleepers: The Purple’s grid comfort layer helps ease stress from the joints, shoulders, and other areas of the body that press into the bed in the side sleeping position.

DreamCloud vs. Purple: Top Similarities

  • Temperature-neutral: Although the DreamCloud’s hybrid construction gives it a slight edge in the cooling category, the Purple mattress is built with gel memory foam that helps this bed stay temperature neutral.
  • Firmness level: Both of these beds are medium-firm, which is a middle-of-the-road firmness level.
  • Responsiveness: The DreamCloud and the Purple mattress respond quickly to your movements, making them easy to move around on without sinking into the bed.

DreamCloud vs. Purple: Top Differences

  • Construction: The Purple is an all-foam bed built with polymer gel foam and polyfoam. The DreamCloud is built with a combination of gel-infused foam and innerspring coils.
  • Body type compatibility: The Purple mattress is better suited for light and average-weight body types, while the DreamCloud’s hybrid construction supports all body types.
  • Durability: Both of these high-quality mattresses will hold up over time, but you may get a few extra years of rest on the DreamCloud before you need to replace your bed.

DreamCloud vs. Purple: Firmness & Feel Differences

Even though these mattresses have similar firmness levels, they feel different when you lay on top of them.

What’s the Firmness Of the DreamCloud vs. Purple Mattresses?

Both the DreamCloud and Purple mattresses both scored a 6.5/10 on the 1–10 mattress firmness scale where 1 is the softest mattress and 10 is the firmest. This firmness level suits most sleepers, but it may feel a little firmer to lightweight sleepers who don’t have enough body weight to sink fully into the bed’s comfort layers, and it may feel softer to heavyweight sleepers who will sink further into the bed.

What Do the DreamCloud vs. Purple Mattresses Feel Like?

When you lay on the DreamCloud mattress, you’ll first feel a gentle hug from the bed’s top foam comfort layer while the coil layer underneath pushes you up and keeps you feeling stable and propped up on top of the mattress. The Purple mattress, feels more like a firm jello surface. The gel memory foam grid layer will gently give around your pressure points, but you’ll feel more like you’re floating on top of the bed rather than sinking deeply into it.

What’s It Like to Sleep On the DreamCloud & Purple?

The DreamCloud sleeps cool and provides a cushioning yet sturdy surface for you to sleep on. This bed stays firm all the way around the edges, making it a good pick for senior citizens or anyone who needs a little extra support getting in or out of bed. This mattress also does a great job of muffling your movements throughout the night, which is helpful if you sleep with a partner or a pet.

The Purple Original has a little more give than the DreamCloud and will allow your joints to sink deeper into the mattress to make it feel buoyant. This bed’s gel-infused breathable comfort layer also helps the mattress stay cool-to-the-touch throughout the night. If you are heavier or like to sleep on your stomach, you may sink too far into the bed for comfort.

Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): 313

Average-Weight Sleepers (130–230 lbs)

The medium-firm support level of these beds are great picks for average-weight back sleepers and side sleepers, but stomach sleepers should opt for the DreamCloud. The Purple mattress’s comfort grid may not provide enough support to the midsection for the stomach sleeping position which may cause back pain over time. Looking for other mattress options? Check out our stomach sleepers page.

Combination sleepers will get a great night’s sleep on either bed because both respond quickly to your movements and will pop back into place quickly if you toss and turn or change sleeping positions.

Heavyweight Sleepers (> 230 lbs)

If you weight over 230 lbs, you should avoid the Purple mattress regardless of your sleeping position. The Purple Grid layer likely won’t provide enough support to keep you from sinking too far into the bed, which can cause back pain or discomfort.

Heavyweight back and side sleepers will likely be comfortable on the DreamCloud mattress. This bed’s combination of foam comfort layers with the firm coil layer underneath provides and ideal amount of cushioning and support to keep you comfortable and in a healthy posture all night long. Stomach sleepers, however, should look for a bed with a firmer level of support.

Lightweight Sleepers (< 130 lbs)

Lightweight back sleepers will find the support they need on either of these two beds, and should make their choice based on whether they want the more sturdy feel of the hybrid DreamCloud mattress or the buoyant feel of the Purple bed.

Lightweight side sleepers won’t be able to sink far enough to the DreamCloud’s comfort layers to get the pressure relief they need, but this mattress will keep them supported in the stomach sleeping position. The Purple, on the other hand, is too plush for stomach sleepers, but may be a good fit for lightweight side sleepers who need a little extra cushion.

Differences in Mattress Construction

The original Purple mattress measures 9.25” high, while the DreamCloud is 14″ high. The Purple mattress is built with all foam, while the DreamCloud is built with 5.5″ of foam layers with 8.5″ of innerspring coils layered inbetween.

Cover

The DreamCloud comes wrapped in a luxurious and breathable cashmere cover. The Purple bed has a soft and stretchy fabric cover made from a combination of polyester, viscose, and Lycra.

Comfort Layers

The DreamCloud’s comfort layer is made with gel-infused foam that keeps you cool while you sleep and provides light cushioning and it gently conforms to your natural curves.

The comfort layer in the Purple mattress is made of a gel-like grid design that has a waffle-like pattern. This layer allows air to flow through so body heat doesn’t get trapped in the bed, and the squares in the grid will collapse as you lay in the bed to releive pressure from the parts of your body that are pressed into the mattress.

Support Layers

Underneath a 2″ transition layer, the DreamCloud has 8.5″ inches of micro coils that provide targeted support to your back and reinforced edge support. The original Purple has 3.5″ of transitional foam that will prevent your body from sinking too deeply into the mattress and reaching the 4” of firm support foam at the base of the bed.

DreamCloud vs. Purple Mattress Performance Ratings & Differences

Temperature

Despite the fact that it is an all-foam bed, the Purple still scored very well in our temperature regulation testing. Beds that are built with innerspring coils, however, are generally some of the best cooling mattresses so opt for the DreamCloud mattress if sleeping cool is your main priority.

Motion Transfer

Our mattress testers noticed that the DreamCloud isolated motion well, making this a good pick for couples and light sleepers and is among our best mattresses for couples. The Purple mattress, however, performed below average in this category, so it may not be the best choice if you sleep with a partner or a pet.

Edge Support

If you sit on or sleep towards the sides of the Purple mattress, you may feel like you are sinking or slipping off the edge. The DreamCloud is built with reinforced edge support to keep you feeling safe and secure on the entire surface of the mattress.

Pressure Relief

Both beds are built with comfort layers that cradle your curves to take stress off of joints and pressure points. Lightweight sleepers will sink easily into the Purple mattress to get the pressure relief they need, while heavier sleepers will find balanced support in the DreamCloud mattress.

Pain Relief

Whether a mattress provides pain relief (such as for hip pain) depends on whether it is suited to your body type and sleeping position. A bed that is too soft will allow your hips to sink too far into the bed, causing lower back pain. A bed that is too firm will be uncomfortable and may also push your body out of its natural, neutral posture. Generally, lightweight sleepers will be more comfortable on the all-foam Purple bed, while the DreamCloud’s firm innerspring core will provide heavier body types with the support they need.

Durability

Both of these bed are built with high-quality materials and are backed up with lengthy warranties. Hybrid beds tend to be more durable than all-foam beds, so you’ll likely get a bit more use out of the DreamCloud bed than you would out of the Purple mattress.

Shipping, Returns, & Warranties

DreamCloud ships their mattresses within the continental U.S., but they’ll deliver to Hawaii or Alaska for a $150 fee. DreamCloud also offers you a 365-night sleep trial period, so you can test out this mattress for a full year before you commit to your purchase, and a lifetime warranty if you decide to keep the bed.

The Purple mattress ships free in the continental U.S., but you can have your bed shipped to Hawaii or Alaska, or add on white glove delivery for an extra fee. You’ll have a 100-night sleep trial period to test out your Purple mattress and it comes with a 10-year warranty.

Our Final Take

Both of these medium-firm bed-in-a-box mattresses that sleep cool are reasonably priced for their quality, and provide ample support for most types of sleepers.

If you’re a light or average-weight back or side sleeper and are looking for ample pressure relief, the Purple is a good pick. If you sleep with a partner and want strong motion isolation, prefer a bouncy, innerspring feel, or need a bed with sturdy edge support, the DreamCloud is a better pick. The DreamCloud’s hybrid construction also makes it a better pick for stomach and heavyweight sleepers.

DreamCloud & Purple FAQs

How many years do the DreamCloud and Purple mattress last?

The DreamCloud comes with a lifetime warranty and it’s thick, hybrid construction is built to stand the test of time, but it may start to decrease in quality within 8-10 years. The Purple’s warranty lasts 10 years, and it should also last about 8-10 years before you start feeling signs of wear in the mattress.

What are the cons of the Purple mattress?

The Purple mattress is a bit pricey, so its not the best pick for those on a budget. Also, the Purple gel-foam Grid has an unusual feel, so it may take time to get used to if you typically sleep on a traditional memory foam or innerspring mattress. The Purple Grid also is not supportive enough for sleepers over 230 lb.

Which mattress is better for a heavy person?

The DreamCloud mattress is better for heavyweight sleepers. The soft foam layers on top of the bed will cradle your curves, but the innerspring core will offer ample support. Heavyweight stomach sleepers, however, should look for a bed with firmer support to avoid sinkage and low back pain.
