Gravity Ice Hybrid Mattress Firmness and Feel
Gravity Ice Hybrid Mattress Firmness
Mattress firmness is a benchmark for how a mattress feels, or more specifically, how much cushioning you can expect when lying down on the mattress. To determine mattress firmness, we use a firmness scale that ranges from 1–10, with 10 being as hard as the floor.
The Gravity Ice Hybrid mattress has a firmness level of 6/10, which is medium-firm. This is also called the universal firmness because it’s compatible with such a wide range of sleeper types. We’ve found that back sleepers and side sleepers over 130 lbs have the best sleep experiences on medium-firm mattresses.
What Does The Gravity Ice Hybrid Feel Like?
Even though the Gravity Ice is a hybrid mattress, it feels more like an all-foam mattress. Three foam layers at the top of the bed give it what we call a balanced foam feel—buoyant with some push back, while also soft and conforming. It’s also worth noting that the Gravity Ice has memory foam layers, but it doesn’t feel as deeply contouring as a traditional memory foam mattress.
Support and Pressure Relief by Sleeping Position
Back Sleepers
The Gravity Ice Hybrid should be a good fit for back sleepers of all body types. The dense foam evenly distributes body weight, which supports good spinal alignment. The coils keep lightweight and average-weight sleepers lifted on top of the mattress, while heavyweight sleepers will sink a little deeper into the comfort layers.
For more beds with a balance between support and cushion, check out the best mattresses for back sleepers.
Side Sleepers
When we tested the Gravity Ice Hybrid for pressure relief—a crucial factor for side sleepers—we were impressed. Specifically, we recommend it to average-weight and heavyweight side sleepers. When our lightweight tester laid on the Gravity Ice, there was some pressure buildup. For better options, those under 130 lbs can peruse the best mattresses for side sleepers.
Stomach Sleepers
Of all the sleeping positions, stomach sleeping is the least compatible with the Gravity Ice Hybrid. Except for lightweight stomach sleepers, who should stay lifted in alignment, the mattress is a touch too soft to keep stomach sleepers’ hips elevated. Too much sinkage may cause average-weight and heavyweight stomach sleepers to develop lower back pain.
For firmer bedding options, take a look at our roundup of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.
Combination Sleepers
Combination sleepers are those who change sleeping positions during the night. The average person should have an easy time moving around on the Gravity Ice Hybrid. There is a tiny bit of delay in the response time of the memory foam top layers, but we were still able to easily roll around on the surface of the mattress.
With that said, consider your primary sleeping positions when deciding whether or not the Gravity Ice will be a good fit. For more responsive beds, see the best mattresses for combination sleepers.

Gravity Ice Hybrid Mattress Performance
Is The Gravity Ice Hybrid Mattress Cooling?
With a name that includes the word “ice,” we expect a distinctly chilly temperature profile for this mattress. The cover did not disappoint. Not only is it cool-to-the-touch—it’s downright cold. That effect does wear off after a few minutes in one place, but when you move to another spot on the mattress, the cover cools down again quickly. However, the effect is dampened by adding a fitted sheet to the mattress.
The mattress cover also has mesh panels along the sides, which, when working in tandem with the breathable coil support layer, improve airflow through the mattress. The memory foam top layers do retain a little heat, so overall, we consider this mattress to be temperature neutral, but not actively cooling.
If you’re a hot sleeper looking for better sleep, consider one of the best cooling mattresses.
Edge Support
Gravity reinforces the edges of this mattress with high-density foam. This is meant to improve support around the perimeter of the mattress, which is helpful for getting in and out of bed, as well as sleeping or sitting along the sides of the bed.
Despite the addition of edge support foam, we found ourselves sliding off the sides of the Gravity Ice mattress, particularly when sitting. This is due mostly to the slick cover material on top of the mattress. Even with a fitted sheet over the cover, we slid right off of the bed. However, when we tested lying on the sides of the mattress, we felt more secure.
Responsiveness
The Gravity Ice Hybrid doesn’t offer the bouncy, highly responsive experience we’d expect from a hybrid mattress, but it’s still fairly easy to move around on. There is a little drag from the memory foam, but overall, this mattress will offer easy mobility for the average person.
Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?
Couples and anyone who shares their bed with a sleeping partner, child, or pet will want to pay special attention to motion isolation. This is the measurement of how well a mattress minimizes motion transfer across the mattress surface.
With thick memory foam top layers, the Gravity Ice Hybrid does an excellent job of keeping the mattress stable and still, even when someone else is rolling around on the bed. We noticed hardly any shaking during our motion tests, so we consider this to be a good mattress for couples and co-sleepers.
Noise
This is a very quiet mattress. The only noise we heard when moving around on the bed came from our wooden foundation.
Pain Relief
The Gravity Ice Hybrid is both supportive and cushioning, so it could prevent you from developing sleep-related back pain or resolve pre-existing back pain from an old mattress.
If you’re on the hunt for a mattress that can relieve back pain, consider your body type and sleeping position first. The Gravity Ice should help with back pain if you’re a strict back sleeper, a lightweight stomach sleeper, or an average-weight or heavyweight side sleeper.

Sex
The absorbent foams on top of this mattress dampen the bounce of the coil layer, so it doesn’t have the springiness that couples often look for when considering a mattress for sex. The cooling technologies should do a good job of keeping you and your partner temperature neutral during high-energy activities on the mattress.
Off-Gassing
Despite having memory foam layers, we didn’t notice any off-gassing when we unboxed our Gravity Ice mattress.
Durability
The Gravity Ice Hybrid should last you at least seven years before showing signs of serious wear. In general, hybrid mattresses tend to last between seven and 10 years.
Gravity Ice Hybrid Mattress Construction: What’s it made of?
The Gravity Ice Hybrid is made with six high-quality layers, including the mattress cover. This medium-firm hybrid construction works for all sleeping positions, depending on your body type. It’s also temperature neutral, thanks to a cooling cover and breathable coil base layer.
Layer #1: Cooling Cover
The Gravity Ice Hybrid is topped with a cooling cover that’s infused with Phase Change Materials. This is one of the coolest mattress covers we’ve tested. It gradually absorbs body heat, like many cooling covers, but it has a distinctly chilly feel at first touch.
Layer #2: Gel Memory Foam
The mattress has a cooling gel memory foam top layer. This gel layer provides immediate relief to pressure points and an extra measure of temperature regulation.
Layer #3: Memory Foam
A deeper layer of memory foam contours around the curves of your body and provides even more pressure relief.
Layer #4: Transition Foam
A thinner layer of polyfoam lies beneath the memory foam. This transitional layer acts as a barrier between the comfort layers and the coil support layer beneath.
Layer #5: Pocketed Coils w/Foam Encasement
The mattress has a pocketed coil support layer. Each coil is individually wrapped in fabric to improve motion isolation and prevent noise that could be caused by friction between the coils. These coils also increase the load-bearing capacity of the mattress. They’re bordered by a frame of high-density edge support foam.
Layer #6: High-Density Polyfoam
The base layer of the mattress is a simple foundation of high-density polyfoam. This layer gives the mattress added stability and improves the lifespan of the coils.
How Much Does the Gravity Ice Hybrid Mattress Cost?

Full | $875 | 54″ x 75″ | 12″ | 83 lbs |
Queen | $1,015 | 60″ x 80″ | 12″ | 100 lbs |

How Do the Policies Measure Up?
Shipping & Unboxing
Gravity includes free bed-in-a-box shipping to the U.S. with their mattress. Delivery in the continental U.S. usually takes between five and seven days, and 10–14 days for Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada.
They don’t offer white glove delivery, but the setup process is pretty simple. Just take the compressed and rolled mattress out of the box, unroll it on your bed frame, and remove the plastic packaging. It will probably take a day or two to fully inflate, and Gravity says that cooler temperatures could cause this process to take longer. It took a full day for our Gravity mattress to inflate.
Warranty
The Gravity Ice Hybrid mattress is covered by a 10-year warranty. This is on par with most other bed-in-a-box mattresses. The warranty only applies to the original owner of the mattress. You can void the warranty by removing the law tag, misusing or damaging the mattress, using an unsupportive bed frame, or using a heating pad on the mattress.
For 10 years, the warranty covers indentations over 1.5” from normal use, and for two years the warranty covers manufacturing defects in the zippered mattress cover. If your mattress develops either of these defects, submit a claim, and Gravity will decide whether or not to repair or replace the mattress at no extra cost to you except shipping and handling.
This isn’t the most generous warranty we’ve seen. Many other companies cover indentations over 1”, as well as the transportation costs for repairs or replacement. Some companies even offer 15–25 year warranties or Lifetime warranties for the original user. Still, some coverage is better than none.
Trial Period & Returns
Trial periods give you the opportunity to test out your new mattress at home instead of in a showroom. Gravity offers a 100-night sleep trial with their mattress—which is standard for the online mattress industry—and returns are free during that time.
To return your Gravity mattress, email contact@gravityblankets.com with your name, order number, shipping address, the reason for your return, and a photo of the mattress. Make sure to use the same email address you used to place your order.
After your return is approved, Gravity will arrange for someone to pick up the mattress and donate it to a charity. Once you send them a photo of the donation receipt, they’ll issue your full refund.
Note: The trial period and return policy may differ if you buy your mattress from another approved retailer, such as Amazon.
Addressing Gravity Ice Hybrid Mattress Complaints
Not Cooling Enough
Some folks were disappointed by the level of cooling they experienced on the Gravity Ice Hybrid mattress. We didn’t notice too much body heat build-up on this mattress, but everyone has a different temperature profile. There is quite a bit of memory foam on top of the coils, which could retain some warmth. If you overheat on the Ice, you can always return the mattress during the trial period, or keep your bedroom temperature between 62°–68°.
Customer Service
Unlike most other online mattress companies, Gravity doesn’t have an online chat or phone line to reach their customer support team. They do have a feature that enables you to email questions to their team, but the response time is not the best. Gravity would improve their customer support if they added a web-chat feature. In the meantime, they have a catalog of FAQs that proves to be quite helpful.

The Bear Hybrid mattress shares a 6/10 medium-firm feel with the Gravity Ice Hybrid, and it’s also a strong match for back sleepers. The Ice offers better pressure relief to side sleepers, but the Bear provides better support for stomach sleepers.
The Gravity Ice Hybrid has lower pricing than the Bear Hybrid, but Bear offers a 20-year warranty for their hybrid mattress, compared with Gravity’s industry-standard 10-year warranty.

The WinkBed and Gravity Ice Hybrid have similar constructions—both are foam and coils hybrid mattresses, but the WinkBed has a euro pillow top, while the Ice has memory foam top layers.
The WinkBed also comes in four firmness levels (Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus), which includes a version designed especially for plus-size sleepers (> 300 lbs). The WinkBed is more expensive than the Ice, but it’s more versatile and comes with a Lifetime warranty.

The Gravity Ice Hybrid and Helix Midnight mattresses share a 6/10 medium-firm feel, but the Ice is a little better for back sleepers, and the Midnight is better for side sleepers. That’s because there is more support on the Ice and better pressure relief on the Midnight.
Helix has slightly higher price points, but they also offer the Midnight in the full range of standard mattress sizes, including Twin XL and California King, whereas the Ice comes only in Full, Queen, and King.

Gravity Ice Hybrid Mattress FAQs
What are the pros and cons of a hybrid mattress?
Hybrid mattresses combine the best (and worst) of both foam and innerspring mattresses. They have the bounce, support, and breathability of coils, but that also means they don''''t isolate motion as well as foam beds. They also have the cushioning comfort of foam, but with that comes heat retention.
What bed frames can I use with the Gravity Ice Hybrid mattress?
The Gravity Ice Hybrid should be stored on a stable, supportive bed frame. Box springs may not adequately support this mattress, so we suggest using a platform bed, adjustable base, or slatted foundation. Also, King size or Queen size bed frames should have a center support.
How long do hybrid mattresses last?
Hybrid mattresses have a lifespan of around seven to 10 years. They''''re more durable than all-foam mattresses because coils are less likely to sag over time with regular use. Foam layers tend to develop body impressions where you sleep after years of use, which can cause discomfort.
The Nerd’s Take: What’s the Bottom Line?
The Gravity Ice Hybrid has a balanced foam feel with the breathability and support of coils. It’s an excellent match for back sleepers, side sleepers over 130 lbs, and lightweight stomach sleepers. Combo sleepers should have an easy time moving around, and couples shouldn’t notice much motion transfer.
