Our expert testers gave the Elite a 4.5/10 on the firmness scale, placing it in the medium-soft category. However, the perceived firmness level depends on an individual’s sleep preferences and body size.

While many people will love the Helix Midnight Elite, it’s best suited for back sleepers, side sleepers, and average-weight individuals. It may feel slightly firmer for lightweight sleepers, while heavyweight sleepers might consider it slightly softer.

What Does the Helix Midnight Elite Feel Like? 

The Midnight Elite has a plush, springy feel. One of our testers, Daniel Grogan, said “it’s like those latex beds we tested last week.” Sleepers should notice the softness of the quilted cover, which offers a gentle and cozy feel when lying down. We think the Helix Midnight Elite is one of the best mattresses for back sleepers seeking a balance of comfort and support. The bed’s unique blend of memory foam and individually wrapped coils contributes to this balance. The top comfort layer’s high-density memory foam cradles the body’s natural curves, providing a cradling effect for lightweight sleepers. The underlying pocketed coils help support the body, ensuring proper spinal alignment and reducing the risk of numbness or discomfort in average or heavyweight sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers 

Since stomach sleeping can strain the neck and back, the best mattresses for stomach sleepers have enough support to align their spines—specifically keeping the hips elevated. One advantage for stomach sleepers is the Midnight Elite’s zoned lumbar support. This layer provides extra reinforcement to the lower back area, which benefits average and lightweight stomach sleepers. However, some heavyweight stomach sleepers might find the bed doesn’t offer enough support.

Combination Sleepers 

The Midnight Elite’s hybrid construction—featuring a blend of memory foam and pocketed coils—should make it ideal for combination sleepers. However, we noticed that it took a bit of effort to move and change positions, most likely because of the thick, soft foam layers.

On the other hand, the pocketed coil system provides targeted support and maintains proper spinal alignment, accommodating the shifting needs of combination sleepers as they move from back to side to stomach positions. Is the Helix Midnight Elite Mattress Cooling? 

The Helix Midnight Elite Mattress offers a sleep temperature that falls within the comfortable middle ground for most sleepers. It’s neither excessively cold nor overly warm and is particularly appealing for hot sleepers thanks to its cooling features.

The quilted pillow top cover utilizes a Phase Change Material (PCM) that the brand claims helps absorb and dissipate excess body heat, while the cool gel-infused memory foam works to prevent heat retention. Edge Support

Edge support is basically how well the edges of the mattress bear weight. Seniors who need help getting in and out of bed, couples who like to sleep far apart, and edge-of-the-bed sleepers will see this as a crucial performance factor. Our lead mattress tester, Loren Bullock, says it best: “The edge support is awful.” When we sat along the edge, the bed sank down a lot (see the picture below for proof). When lying there it was slightly better—a slight sink without too much fear of falling.

Responsiveness

Based on the construction alone, the Helix Midnight Elite mattress should offer excellent responsiveness because of the pocketed coil systems scattered throughout the bed. But, we found the soft foam to mute some of that ease of movement. Sleepers can still switch positions or get in and out of bed, but you may feel a little stuck.

Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?

For a hybrid mattress, Helix is a decent choice for people who share a bed with a partner. When one person moves or shifts positions on the bed, the coils surrounding that area respond to the movement, helping prevent it from spreading to other parts of the mattress. If you’re not an incredibly light sleeper, you should still sleep soundly with a partner.

Noise

The Helix Midnight Elite Mattress is quiet. The wrapped coils help minimize the noise that’s associated with motion transfer. Plus, memory foam is known to be silent.

Pain Relief

If you have hip or shoulder pain, the Midnight Elite’s pressure point relief is good, but not great (see pressure map screenshots below). We saw a bit of yellow in the hips and shoulders of our testers, meaning slight pressure buildup, but noting that should cause pain. The coils in the comfort layer could be preventing amazing pressure relief.

The good news is, if you have back pain, the Midnight Elite’s memory foam comfort layer and zoned lumbar support areas conform to the body. This targeted lumbar support can ease back pain and reduce the risk of future discomfort.

Sex

We give the Elite mixed reviews when it comes to using the mattress for sex. Its average responsiveness may have you and your partner feeling stuck as you try to move around the mattress. But, it’s very quiet. So, if you have a sturdy, silent bed frame, you shouldn’t hear any squeaking or creaking. 

Off-Gassing

Mattress off-gassing refers to releasing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and chemical odors from a new mattress. Off-gassing is a natural process and is generally considered harmless.  The smell should dissipate quickly, especially if the mattress is in a well-ventilated room. But, users may want to air out the bed for a day or two before use if they’re sensitive to smells.

The Helix Midnight Elite Mattress offers free shipping in the United States. Helix will also ship to Canada, but it’s $250 per mattress. Each mattress comes in two boxes and usually arrives within five to 10 business days. You can request white glove delivery for an additional charge.

Most reviewers say the unboxing process is a breeze. To set up your mattress:

• Open the lid, place the box on its side, and pull out the bed.
• Once it’s out of the box, pull the plastic tab to unroll your mattress.
• Carefully unwrap the final layer of plastic with a pair of scissors.
• Wait for at least 30 minutes for the bed to fully expand.

Warranty

The Helix Midnight Elite has a 15-year limited warranty covering all manufacturing defects.

Trial Period & Returns

Bed buyers get a 100-night sleep trial to test the mattress before committing. They can contact Helix Sleep’s customer support to initiate the return if they’re dissatisfied with the bed.

The company will coordinate with a local charity or recycling center to pick up the mattress from your home, and you won’t have to take care of the removal process yourself. 

The timing of the refund varies, but it usually occurs after the mattress has been successfully picked up or received back at their facility. It might take a few business days to process the refund and for the amount to appear in the customer’s account.
