The Mattress Nerd’s Take: Joybed is an organic bed-in-a-box brand dedicated to producing truly all natural mattresses, replacing hot foams for cotton and wool, where air can flow naturally. In addition to these cooling materials, natural fibers and the coil construction of the Joybed LXP hybrid mattress makes this a great choice for hot sleepers interested in an eco-conscious bed.

Our Nerds found it may suit some average weight side sleepers and most back sleepers. Although this is considered to be a medium plush bed by Joybed, it will not provide necessary support for all side sleepers and most stomach sleepers. Couples should find that the quality edge support allows them to maximize space on the bed, and heavier sleepers will not have to worry about sinking near the edges.

The Joybed LXP comes in two firmness options: medium-firm and medium plush. Check out our full review on the softer Joybed LXP medium-plush version below.

Who is the Joybed LXP Mattress Best for?

Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  4 3 3
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 3 3 3
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  2 3 3

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Back Sleepers

For some heavyweight sleepers, there is pressure build up in the lower back and legs. However, lightweight and average back sleepers should find excellent pressure relief. Heavier back sleepers may also sink beyond the comfort layers, causing back pain and spinal misalignment. If you are looking for a more supportive mattress, check out the best mattress for back sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers

As a medium-plush mattress, the Joybed LXP may not be the best mattress for stomach sleepers. Usually stomach sleepers need a firmer mattress that also relieves pressure around the hip points, without causing them to sink. Lightweight stomach sleepers may be able to stay on top of the mattress but heavier sleepers will find their chest and hips sink. Joybed’s alternative medium-firm mattress may provide better pressure relief.

Side Sleepers

The Joybed mattress keeps the spine aligned for average weight side sleepers and mild pressure in the hips and shoulders. However, heavyweight sleepers will experience high pressure throughout, sinking deep into the cotton layer, where you may feel the coils beneath. Despite being advertised as a medium-plush mattress, it does not accommodate side sleepers well. For a better option, check out the best mattress for side sleepers.

Combination Sleepers

Depending on your specific weight and which positions you spend a majority of the time in will determine whether the Joybed mattress can keep you comfortable and free of pressure build up. Lighter combination sleepers should be able to rest on the layers of cotton and receive enough cushioning. For more responsive mattresses check out the best mattress for combination sleepers.

How Does the Joybed Mattress Feel?

Responsiveness, Bounce and Ease of Movement

The top layers of cotton and wool mixed with lower innerspring layers give the bed some bounce when adjusting on top of it. It is also responsive as a plush mattress, you can into the cotton layers and then move with the mattress returning to its original shape.

As we were testing the mattress, we also felt the mattress coils compress as you change positions. This was especially noticeable when adjusting to sleeping on your side, as you sink into the mattress.

How Firm Is This Mattress?

Leesa provides consumers with the option between a medium-firm and medium-plush version of the mattress. Mattresses are usually rated on a scale from 1-10, with one being the softest and ten the firmest. Despite Joybed advertising the medium-plush as a 3 or 4 on our firmness scale, we disagreed. Usually stomach and back sleepers need a firmer mattress than that to keep their spines aligned, but we found adequate support for these sleepers in the Joybed. We would give the Joybed LXP a 5.5/10 firmness rating.

Does It Sleep Hot?

Compared to a traditional hybrid mattress with memory foam, or an all foam mattress, the Joybed should provide better cooling with the organic materials of cotton and wool. After testing, we consider the Joybed to be a great cooling mattress, it is noticeably cool to the touch and air is released from the two layers of springs.

Is the Joybed Mattress Good For Couples?

Through our testing we found that the Joybed mattress moves underneath the sleeper and may shift some of that motion to the co-sleeper. Movement was especially felt when moving in and out of the bed. The bounce of the coils in an innerspring mattress can contribute to the motion felt by couples. For mattresses that isolate motion better, see the best mattress for couples.

How’s the Edge Support?

The innerspring components of the Joybed provide great edge support by compressing when sitting on the edge, without sacrificing the shape. The reinforced edges also allow you to sleep across the entire mattress, important for larger sleepers and especially couples. To make the most of your mattress surface,

Construction: What’s Under the Surface?

The Joybed LXP is the plushest and thickest mattress offered by Joybed, at 13 inches tall. The organic cover, cotton and wool layers will naturally cool the sleeper and provide soft cushioning for back and stomach sleepers. The two layers of coils make the Joybed a bouncy mattress, easy to move around on and distribute the body weight evenly.

Layer #1: Organic Cotton Cover

While the cotton cover is hand stitched and GOTS certified, free of harmful chemicals, dyes and bleaches, we found some concerns while testing. Some of the handwoven elements protrude from the mattress, making it possible these buttons could be felt by sleepers and disrupt their comfort.

Layer #2: Plant Fiber Fire Barrier

Beneath the cover is a fire barrier made entirely from natural plant fibers. The entire Joybed LXP mattress is constructed with natural materials, so there will be no layers of memory foam or latex. The Joybed is a great option for those interested in the best organic mattresses.

Layer #3: Cotton

Two cotton layers with a wool layer in between the two work to keep the sleeper cool without adding enhanced technology or other chemicals. The breathable nature of cotton helps increase airflow and prevent heat from feeling trapped against the sleeper.

Layer #4: Wool

Wool is also a naturally cooling material, keeping the mattress dry and improving temperature regulation.

Layer #5: Nano Coils

This first layer of coils is meant to help contour around the body and provide support for varying sleeping positions.

Layer #6: Individually Wrapped Coils

Individually wrapped coils further increase airflow and provide more bounce than a memory foam mattress.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping, Unboxing & Returns

All Joybed mattresses are made in the USA, Michigan to be exact. Joybed offers free delivery to the lower 48 states within 3-5 business days after the bed is purchased. Once shipped and unboxed, the Joybed can be used on a platform bed, adjustable base or foundation.

During the unboxing we noticed an off-gassing smell similar to that of teabag. Be sure to have someone else’s help when you  unbox the mattress, because it’s really quite heavy and unwieldy compared to other mattresses. The wool, cotton and coils are definitely heavy.

The Joybed comes with a 120-night sleep trial and a 10 year warranty that protects defects. Joybed relies on a larger trial period to allow more time for the mattress to adjust to the sleeper’s body. If you find your Joybed model is not working for you, you can be eligible for a full refund or free exchange for a different model. Refunds include a $139 processing fee and must be within the 120-night trial period.

Comparing the Joybed Mattress

Joybed LXP vs Avocado

Both the Avocado and the Joybed are all natural mattresses, made with wool and coil systems. The Avocado’s additional latex layer makes it a little firmer and a bouncier mattress. In similar price ranges, your choice will depend on your sleeping positions and pressure relieving preferences.

What’s the Bottom Line?

Joybed’s innerspring mattress provides plush comfort with multiple layers of coils. The Joybed is set apart from other similar mattresses because of its organic and all-natural construction. Cotton, wool and organic plant fibers all contribute to a naturally cooling mattress and makes it a great choice for hot sleepers looking for an eco-conscious choice.

However, we also found the plush version of this mattress still did not provide enough pressure relief for a majority of side sleepers  positions and does not provide the right firmness level for stomach sleepers and heavy sleepers. We find it best suited for back sleepers or lighter stomach sleepers. While it does boast no off gassing, we found the bed did give off an a-typical odor from the normal foam off-gassing.
