Is the Leesa Original Hybrid Mattress for You?

Who’s Going to Love the Leesa Original Hybrid Mattress

  • Back Sleepers: No matter your body type, the Leesa Original Hybrid should provide a cloud-like combo of body contouring and spinal support.
  • Side Sleepers: If you weigh less than 230 lbs and sleep on your side (fetal position anyone?), then the Leesa Original Hybrid will offer enough pressure relief to keep you comfy.
  • Couples: The Leesa Original Hybrid has a medium-firmness level that bridges the gap between soft mattress lovers and firm mattress lovers. If you and your partner have different preferences, this is a good compromise. Plus, the Original Hybrid does a great job of isolating motion.

Who Should Steer Clear of the Leesa Original Hybrid Mattress

  • Stomach Sleepers: Unless you weigh less than 130 lbs, you’re probably going to feel your lower back arch out of alignment as your hips dip into the soft memory foam. To avoid back pain, opt for a firmer mattress.
  • Combination Sleepers: If you do a few 360 degree turns before finding the right spot in bed, you may want a more responsive mattress. The Original Hybrid has springy coils, but soft foam above the coils makes changing positions more work.

Leesa Original Hybrid Mattress Firmness and Feel

Leesa Original Hybrid Mattress Firmness

On the 1–10 mattress firmness scale—where one is softer than a kitten’s belly and 10 is firmer than the bathroom floor after a night out—the Leesa Original Hybrid is 6/10. Mattresses in 5–7/10 range are considered medium-firm.

This firmness level is best for back sleepers who like a little extra cushion and side sleepers who aren’t prone to joint pain. If you develop pain in your shoulders or hips, you may need a softer mattress. Most stomach sleepers need a firmer mattress that’s at least 7/10, but those with petite or lightweight body types should get enough support on the Leesa Original Hybrid, since they won’t sink as far into the comfort foams.

What Does the Leesa Original Hybrid Feel Like?

If it weren’t for the slight bounce of the coils at the base of the mattress, I’d have guessed that the Leesa Original Hybrid was a standard memory foam mattress. That’s because the top layer of memory foam feels dense and hugs the curves of my body.

I expected a hybrid mattress (aka, a mattress with both foam and coil layers) to be bouncier. Instead, I feel suspended in the foam above the coils. I don’t really notice the coils unless I’m falling onto the mattress to cuddle up.

What Sleeping Position Is the Leesa Original Hybrid Best For?

Body Type:BACK SLEEPERSSTOMACH SLEEPERSSIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): 545
Average-weight (130–230 lbs):534
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): 523

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Back Sleepers

The Leesa Original Hybrid may be the best mattress for back sleepers in the Leesa collection. Our testers described the Leesa “super contouring” to their curves, and our pressure map showed virtually no pressure buildup, regardless of body type (lightweight, average-weight, or heavyweight).

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers’ experience on this mattress will depend on their body type: those with lightweight body types showed the best pressure relief during our testing, and average-weight side sleepers showed only a little more pressure. Our heavyweight tester had a little pressure buildup near his hips, so we only recommend the Leesa Original Hybrid to heavyweight sleepers who alternate between their back and sides.

If you’re a strict side sleeper who weighs over 230 lbs, see our list of the best mattresses for side sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers

The Leesa Original Hybrid is a little too soft for average-weight and heavyweight stomach sleepers, but it should keep those with lightweight body types lifted. If you sleep mostly on your front, you need a mattress that’s firm enough to keep you “on top” of the bed. For our roundup, see the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

Combination Sleepers

Combination sleepers are those who change positions while they sleep. For example, I mostly sleep on my stomach, but sometimes wake up on my side. If you change positions only a few times while you sleep and have a lightweight or average-weight body type, the Leesa Original Hybrid should be fine.

If you’re like popcorn in a pot or have a heavyweight body type, you’ll want a bed that’s quicker to respond to movement. For better options, look through the best mattresses for combination sleepers.

Leesa Original Hybrid Mattress Performance

Is the Leesa Original Hybrid Mattress Cooling?

Mattresses with memory foam rarely score higher than “average” on our cooling tests, but the Leesa Original Hybrid also has a breathable coil support system. The result is decent airflow through the mattress that kept me at a comfortable neutral temperature. The average person shouldn’t overheat on this bed, but if you regularly kick off your sheets, you may want a more cooling mattress

Edge Support

Do you ever use the edge of your mattress to get in and out of bed? This category is for you. It’s also for those who regularly sit on the side of their bed or need to maximize the habitable space on their mattress (i.e. couples sharing a Full-size bed).

The edge support around the Leesa Original Hybrid is just average, so it’s not a great fit for those with heavier body types. The average person should get sufficient support while sitting on the sides of this bed, and our testers felt secure when lying at the edge of this mattress, too.

Responsiveness

Memory foam is known for being slow-moving—you’ve probably seen a photo of someone’s handprint lingering in memory foam. That characteristic is great for deep contouring around your curves, but it’s not great for those who need a sleeping surface that quickly responds to changes in position.

The Leesa Original Hybrid is more responsive than a traditional memory foam mattress because it has a coil base layer, but it didn’t wow us with its responsiveness.

Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?

Old school innerspring mattresses were bouncy enough to launch kids to the ceiling, but consequently terrible at isolating motion. Fortunately, modern mattress materials do a better job at limited motion transfer for those who share their bed with a partner, pet, or child.

The Leesa Original Hybrid is topped with two layers of foam that absorb most of the movement that might otherwise pass from one side of the mattress to the other. The springs  have a little bounce-back, but overall, this is a good mattress for couples and co-sleepers.

Noise

The Leesa Original Hybrid is practically silent. You shouldn’t notice much (if any) noise coming from the mattress.

Pain Relief

How well a mattress prevents or relieves pain depends a lot on your sleeping position. Back sleepers should have no problems on the Leesa Original Hybrid, but stomach sleepers are at risk of developing lower back pain. Instead, they should look for a firmer mattress. Side sleepers shouldn’t notice any new pain developing as long as they weigh less than 230 lbs.

If you experience chronic pain, look into our favorite mattresses for shoulder pain and back pain.

Sex

The best mattresses for sex enable you to move around easily without overheating. The Leesa Original Hybrid stays pretty cool, but it’s not particularly easy to move around on. Even so, we think it should work for the average couple. Plus, it stays quiet.

Off-Gassing

You know that “new car” smell? Mattresses have one too, and it’s called off-gassing. Don’t worry, though: off-gassing is temporary and non-toxic. We noticed a slight odor when unboxing our Leesa Original Hybrid, but it went away quickly.

Durability

A hybrid mattress like the Leesa Original Hybrid should last you around seven to eight years, though Leesa’s mattress warranty lasts for 10 years.

Leesa Original Hybrid Mattress Construction: What’s it made of?

The Leesa Original Hybrid is made with a top layer of CertiPUR-US certified memory foam, a second layer of comfort foam, and a base layer of coils and support foam.

Layer #1—Polyester-Viscose Cover: The mattress is wrapped in a fabric cover made of 87 percent polyester and 13 percent viscose. It’s soft and breathable, but you should still use a mattress protector and sheets.

Layer #2—Memory Foam (1”): The comfort layer is soft, contouring memory foam that’s designed to be more breathable than traditional memory foam.

Layer #3—Performance Foam(1.5”): The transition layer is responsive polyfoam that, like the memory foam above it, is designed not to retain heat.

Layer #4—Pocket Spring System (8”): A thick layer of individual pocket coils adds lots of support and breathability to the mattress. They also improve edge support.

Layer #5—Support Foam (0.75”): A thin layer of high-density foam supports the whole mattress and gives the coils a solid foundation to push off of.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

Leesa mattresses ship for free, and you can add white glove delivery and old mattress removal for $150. Your mattress will be made-to-order at one of Leesa’s U.S.-based factories, and once made, will be shipped to you within three to five business days. Setting up our Leesa mattress was easy with two people, and took less than two minutes.

Warranty

The Leesa Original Hybrid is covered by a 10-year warranty for the original owner only. If you notice covered defects—like deterioration over one inch or manufacturing flaws in the foam or cover—you could be eligible for a free replacement mattress. The only cost you’ll be responsible for is shipping.

Trial Period & Returns

Every Leesa mattress comes with a 100-night sleep trial period. This is your opportunity to make sure that you love the mattress before committing to it for the next decade. Leesa requires you to keep the mattress for 30 days before requesting a return. The “break-in period,” as it’s called, is intended to give your body time to adjust to the new mattress.

If you decide to initiate a return, Leesa will arrange for the mattress to be picked up and donated. Since they donate used mattresses, Leesa requires that the mattress be in “like new” condition, so no stains, tears, or damage. You’ll get a full refund once the mattress is picked up.

Note: Mattress returns from Alaska or Hawaii cost $100.

Addressing Leesa Original Hybrid Mattress Complaints

Off-Gassing Odor

A couple of Leesa customers complained that their mattress sustained an off-gassing odor for weeks after being unboxed. This was not our experience—in fact, we thought the off-gassing was mild—but that doesn’t mean everyone had the same experience.

Leesa doesn’t cover off-gassing in their warranty, so if your mattress still has an odor after a few weeks, you can reach out to Leesa for a solution or return it. We recommend leaving your mattress in a well-ventilated room with no sheets for at least 24 hours before sleeping on it.

Causes Back Pain

Several of the negative reviews about the Leesa mattress involved customers developing back pain. They didn’t specify their body type or sleeping position, but we guess that the majority were stomach sleepers.

Mattresses aren’t a one-size-fits-all product, and we don’t recommend the Leesa Original Hybrid to stomach sleepers over 130 lbs or those prone to shoulder or hip pain. It’s a great choice for back sleepers with back pain, but even so, you need to give your body a couple weeks to adjust to a new sleeping surface. If you still don’t like it after a month, you can return it.

The main difference between the Leesa Original and Leesa Original Hybrid mattress is that the Original Hybrid is…well…a hybrid mattress, whereas the original is made entirely of foam. With a more breathable coil base layer, the Original Hybrid is better for hot sleepers. It’s also a good choice for those who want a mattress with some bounce.

We recommend both mattresses to back sleepers, though only the Original Hybrid is supportive enough for back sleepers weighing more than 230 lbs. The Original Hybrid is better for average-weight side sleepers, and both work for lightweight side sleepers. Price-wise, the Original foam mattress is more affordable.

The Leesa Sapira Hybrid is an upgraded version of the Leesa Original Hybrid. The two feel very similar, and we recommend them to almost the same kinds of sleepers: side sleepers under 230 lbs, stomach sleepers under 130 lbs, and back sleepers. The biggest difference is that the Leesa Original Hybrid is a touch more supportive, so we recommend it more highly to heavyweight back sleepers.

Both beds have a 6/10 medium-firmness and provide excellent pressure relief. They also both have memory foam and comfort foam layers above a coil support system. The Leesa Original Hybrid feels doughier because the memory foam is on top, while the Leesa Sapira Hybrid is more responsive since the polyfoam is on top. Price-wise, you’ll pay less for the Leesa Original Hybrid.

Like the Leesa Original Hybrid, the Leesa Legend mattress is made with pressure-relieving foams and supportive coils. The Legend is Leesa’s premium luxury mattress, and they incorporate high-end materials like organic cotton, Merino wool, and recycled plastic fibers. Whereas the Original Hybrid has one layer of coils, the Legend has two—both microcoils and pocketed coils.

Overall, the Legend is higher performing, but it costs significantly more than the Original Hybrid. If you need extra pressure relief and have a luxury budget, go with the Legend. Otherwise, you could go either way. The only sleepers who shouldn’t choose either mattress are stomach sleepers over 130 lbs.

The Casper Hybrid is another mattress made with memory foam and coils. It’s a little softer than the Leesa Original Hybrid, so it’s better for those who prefer a soft mattress, but not for those who need lots of support. Heavier sleepers should go with the Leesa Original Hybrid. Side and back sleepers under 230 lbs could go either way.

During our performance tests, the Casper Hybrid received higher scores for ease of movement and edge support, though both beds earned at least average scores in all performance categories. If price is your main concern, the Leesa is more affordable by a couple hundred dollars.

The TEMPUR-Adapt mattress line includes an all-foam version and hybrid version. Both versions have a medium-firmness like the Leesa Original Hybrid, though the hybrid TEMPUR-Adapt more closely resembles the feel of the Leesa.

The main difference between these two beds is price—the TEMPUR-Adapt is more expensive. Also, the TEMPUR-Adapt has two layers of memory foam, while the Leesa Original Hybrid has one. With less memory foam, the Leesa should stay cooler than the TEMPUR-Adapt, but it doesn’t isolate motion as well.

The Saatva Classic is an innerspring mattress with a pillow top and two layers of coils. It’s more responsive and breathable than the Leesa Original Hybrid, so we recommend it to combination sleepers and those who overheat at night.

Also, the Saatva is offered in three firmness levels: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm. The Luxury Firm option feels the most like the Leesa Original Hybrid. Back sleepers could choose either mattress, stomach sleepers should go for the Firm Saatva, and side sleepers will get better cushioning on the Leesa.

The Nerd’s Take: What’s the Bottom Line?

The Leesa Original Hybrid combines the pressure relief of Leesa’s original foam mattress with the breathability and responsiveness of coils. The result is a temperature-neutral hybrid mattress with above average motion isolation, pressure relief, and durability. Plus, it’s one of the more affordable Leesa mattresses.

We recommend it to side sleepers with lightweight or average-weight body types, back sleepers of all body types, and stomach sleepers with lightweight body types. It also works well for couples, thanks to good cooling features and motion isolation.

Leesa Premium Foam Pillow

Leesa Premium Foam Pillow

The Leesa Pillow is made with a solid piece of memory foam that’s ideal for anyone who likes their pillow to closely conform to their head and neck. At 5″ thick, it’s best suited to back and side sleepers, but is probably too lofty for most stomach sleepers. The foam is ventilated with tiny channels that improve breathability, so the pillow stays temperature neutral, which is a big bonus for hot sleepers.
