Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night Mattress Firmness and Feel

Firmness

Firmness is an important feature in a mattress, both for personal preference and to fit your size and sleeping position. The Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night mattress is available in three firmnesses: extra firm, medium, and plush.

Here at Mattress Nerd, we rate firmness on a scale from 1 to 10, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest. We tested the medium model of the Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night and rated it as 6.5/10, or medium-firm. How firm a mattress feels will vary from person to person, so a lightweight sleeper might find this model to be firmer than the average person, while a heavyweight sleeper might find it to be softer.

Fortunately, since this mattress is available in three different firmnesses, there should be a model that works for everyone.

What Sleeping Position Is Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night Mattress Best For?

Body Type:BACK SLEEPERSSTOMACH SLEEPERSSIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): 554
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs):554
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): 542

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Back Sleepers

If you primarily sleep on your back, you want a mattress that will support you and maintain your spinal alignment. Generally, that means a medium to firm mattress. The medium model of the Renewed Night should work for lightweight to average-weight back sleepers. Heavyweight back sleepers will probably prefer the extra firm model. See our best mattresses for back sleepers for more options.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers generally need a mattress that is supportive and firm enough to keep their hips elevated while they sleep, which will help to prevent lower back pain. Lightweight stomach sleepers should go with the medium model, while average-weight to heavyweight stomach sleepers will probably prefer the extra firm model. To see more options, check out our best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

Side Sleepers

The best mattress for side sleepers will be contouring enough to provide pressure relief and maintain spinal alignment. The plush or medium models will probably work best for lightweight and average-weight side sleepers.

For heavyweight side sleepers, the Renewed Night might not be the best pick because the pressure relief wasn’t the strongest. We’d recommend one of our best mattresses for side sleepers instead.

Combination Sleepers

If you sleep in a combination of the three sleeping positions above—you guessed it! You’re a combination sleeper. Combination sleepers need a mattress that is responsive and comfortable for the different positions they sleep in.

The Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night is a responsive bed, so it’ll be easy for combination sleepers to switch between positions throughout the night. For lightweight combination sleepers, we’d recommend the plush or medium model. Average-weight combination sleepers will probably be most comfortable on the medium model, and heavyweight combination sleepers should go with the extra firm

Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night Mattress Performance

Is the Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night Mattress Cooling?

If you’re too warm at night to sleep, one solution could be a cooling mattress. The Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night has quite a few features that are designed to help you sleep cooler, including cooling gel, perforations in the foam, a cool-to-the-touch cover, and innerspring coils.

When we tested the mattress, we thought it did a pretty good job at keeping us cool. Of all mattress types, hybrid and innerspring mattresses allow for more airflow than an entirely foam construction, as well as the other features that contribute to an overall cooler experience. For most people who get too warm at night, the Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night is a good option to sleep temperature neutral.

However, if your heat levels at night are more like a ghost pepper than a jalapeno, we’d recommend something with even stronger cooling abilities. To see more options, check out our best cooling mattress recommendations.

Edge Support

The Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night uses a mix of foam and coils in its construction, giving the mattress a lot of support. And because you can pick your firmness level, there’s a lot of variety for every type of sleeper to get the support that they need. It’s important to consider both your body weight and your sleeping position when deciding if a mattress will be a good fit for you.

This mattress also has Serta’s BestEdge Foam Encasement, which is essentially a reinforced edge around the bed. This reinforcement gives the Serta Perfect Sleeper really great edge support. We saw only a little bit of sinkage when we tested sitting and lying along the edge of the bed. No worrying that you’re about to roll off the edge of the bed with this mattress.

Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?

One important consideration for couples is motion isolation. A mattress that can prevent motion transfer across the bed when one partner is tossing and turning (or getting up for a midnight snack) can make a big difference in quality of sleep. When we tested it, the Serta Perfect Sleeper showed average motion isolating abilities.

If you are easily awoken by your partner’s movements, this probably isn’t the best bed for you. But for the average couple, it isolates motion well enough that you won’t feel like you’re in a bouncy house every time your partner moves. For more beds that isolate motion well, we recommend looking at our best memory foam mattresses or our best mattresses for couples to ensure a good night’s sleep with your partner.

Pain Relief

To prevent joint pain, you want a mattress that can relieve pressure. We tested the Renewed Night with our pressure map and saw overall good results, but there was some pressure buildup in our testers’ shoulders and hips when lying on their sides. If you already have pain in those pressure points, you might want to find a mattress that can offer more pressure point relief, particularly for side sleepers.

Responsiveness

Another important consideration for some senior shoppers is mobility. If you have trouble moving easily, you want a mattress that will help you, not make moving even more difficult. The Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night is a responsive mattress, which will help you move around on top of the bed and not get stuck.

Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night Mattress Construction: What’s It Made Of?

The Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night is a hybrid mattress that uses gel memory foam and individually wrapped coils. It’s the most basic mattress in the Perfect Sleeper Line, which also includes the Renewed Night Firm, the Renewed Sleep, the Renewed Sleep Firm, and the Luminous Sleep. The other models include more layers of memory foam and pillow tops, and are also available in different comfort levels.

Layer #1: CoolFeel Cover:

The cover of the Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night is cool-to-the-touch, creating a cooler sleep surface. It’s made with biobased Phase Change Material, meaning it comes from plant-based materials and changes according to your body temperature.

Layer #2: HeiQ Vblock:

On the top layer of the mattress is Serta’s HeiQ Vblock, which is an antimicrobial material that Serta claims kills 99 percent of bacteria on contact.

Layer #3: HexCloud Gel Memory Foam:

This layer uses Serta’s HexCloud gel memory foam, which has cutouts to promote airflow and make the mattress cooler. The gel will also give the foam some cooling effects and pressure relieving capabilities.

Layer #4: 1000 Edition Custom Support Coil System:

The support layer of the mattress is made with individually wrapped coils. These coils provide more targeted support, because they are individual as opposed to interlocked, and allow for more airflow within the bed.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

Serta ships for free within the contiguous United States, but doesn’t currently ship to Hawaii or Alaska. Their mattresses are available at a variety of retailers, so you may be able to find one locally or that will ship to you, if you are located in either of those states.

Serta does offer a white glove delivery service for an extra fee. With this service, a team will set up your new mattress and remove your old mattress, in addition to delivering.

When you order from Serta, you can expect that your mattress will arrive within five to 14 business days. The mattress will be compressed and rolled into a box, so all you have to do is open the box, remove the packaging, and roll the mattress onto its base.

Warranty

When purchasing a mattress, you want to be sure that you understand the warranty that comes with it. A mattress warranty will cover the cost of repairs or replacement when certain defects occur with a mattress.

Serta offers a 10-year limited warranty on all of their mattresses. The warranty only covers defects in material and workmanship, so any damage caused by the owner doesn’t qualify. If you want to file a warranty claim with Serta, you’ll need to have the receipt of purchase and the information from the law tag on the mattress.

There’s a form on their website, and they’ll contact you after you fill it out. Be aware that there will be an inspection fee and delivery fee, if the mattress is replaced.

Trial Period & Returns

If the thought of buying a mattress online without testing it has you lying awake at night filled with anxiety, worry no more. That’s where sleep trials come in. A sleep trial, or home trial, is a period of time after you purchase a mattress online during which you have the option to return the mattress if you decide you don’t like it. The advantage of sleep trials is that you get to test the mattress by actually sleeping on it, night after night.

Serta offers a 120-night sleep trial period. If the Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night isn’t working for you during those 120 nights, you can exchange it or return it for a full refund.

Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night Mattress FAQs

Can you flip a Serta Perfect Sleeper?

No, the Serta Perfect Sleeper mattresses should not be flipped, because there is a specified top and bottom of each mattress. If you flip the mattress, you’ll be sleeping on the support layers and base instead of the comfort layer.

Does a Serta Perfect Sleeper need a box spring?

It depends on what kind of bed frame you use. Serta recommends using a box spring to get support and breathability, but if you use a base that has support in the center, you don’t need it. The Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night is compatible with many foundations, from a box spring to an adjustable base.

What is the difference between Serta Perfect Sleeper models?

The Renewed Night is just one of several Serta Perfect Sleeper models. It’s the most basic version of the mattress, with just one layer of memory foam and no pillow top. The other models include varying layers of memory foam and some of them feature a plush or firm pillow top.

Comparing the Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night Mattress

Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night vs. Serta iComfort CF1000 Mattress

The iComfort line is another series of mattresses produced by Serta. They are designed to be breathable and cooling. The CF1000 incorporates carbon fiber memory foam, which channels heat away from the body, for an extra cooling effect. It’s only available in a medium firmness and is 10” tall. It’s around the same price as the Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night, so both are great options, depending on whether you prefer a foam or hybrid construction.

Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night vs. Serta iComfort CF3000 Mattress

The iComfort CF3000 is a good mattress for hot sleepers who still want a foam mattress. It uses carbon infused foam, a cool-to-the-touch cover, and Serta’s unique Ultra Cold System to direct heat away from the sleeper. It’s 12.5” thick, so it’s a little thinner than the Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night. Like that bed, the iComfort CF30000 is available in three different firmnesses.

Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night vs. Serta iComfort CF4000 Mattress

The iComfort CF40000 is an all-foam mattress that has carbon fiber infused foam, a cool-to-the touch cover, and Serta’s Air Support Foam. The Air Support Foam has perforations that allow more air to move within the mattress, as well as helping the foam to contour around your body and relieve pressure. This mattress is also available in multiple firmnesses, so you can pick the one to match your sleeping style and size.

Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night vs. Beautyrest Harmony Lux Hybrid Mattress

The Beautyrest Harmony Lux Hybrid is a bed from another legacy mattress brand. It’s a hybrid mattress with a classic hotel bed feel. It’s a firm mattress, so it’s a great pick for back and stomach sleepers, but not so much for side sleepers who need a bit more cushioning

The Beautyrest Harmony Lux Hybrid is also a great cooling mattress, thanks to its hybrid construction and its SEAQUAL cover, which feels cool to the touch. SEAQUAL is a fabric made from post-consumer plastic waste, so it also gets a point for environmental friendliness.

Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night vs. Nectar Mattress

Nectar is a popular memory foam mattress that’s more affordable, with a Queen size mattress priced at just over $1,000. Nectar is another good mattress for hot sleepers who want a foam bed, as it uses gel memory foam to keep the mattress and sleeper from overheating. The Nectar mattress is medium-firm, so it’s great for average-weight side sleepers and lightweight back sleepers.

Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night vs. Saatva Classic Mattress

The Saatva Classic mattress is one of our favorite hybrid mattresses here at Mattress Nerd. Like the Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night, it’s available in three different firmnesses: plush soft, luxury firm, and firm. Those options make the Saatva Classic a great choice for a wide variety of sleepers.

It’s a very high quality mattress with excellent edge support, responsiveness, and temperature regulation. However, that high quality comes with a luxury price tag, so the Saatva Classic is definitely not a budget option. If pricing is a concern, go with the Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night over Saatva.

Pros/Cons

Pros

  • Rock solid edge support: The Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night has a reinforced edge, which gives it really solid edge support. This is great for anyone who likes to sit or lie along the edge of their bed, as well as couples who share a smaller mattress.
  • Multiple firmness options: We tested the medium model of this mattress, but it’s available in three firmnesses, which gives you options for picking the right firmness level for you.
  • Bouncy and responsive: This mattress has lots of bounce and is easy to move around on top of. This makes it great for combination sleepers and also makes it a great mattress for sex

Complaints

  • Average motion isolation: For most people, the motion isolation this mattress offers will be fine. But couples who are easily woken up will probably want something that isolates motion better.
  • Short warranty: Serta’s 10-year warranty is really short compared to some other brands. Many now offer Lifetime warranties. Additionally, there are some fees associated with filing a warranty claim.
  • Some pressure buildup: If you have joint pain or aches, you might want something that can do more to relieve pressure. Again, for the average sleeper it should be okay, but those who already have sensitivities may want another bed.

The Nerd’s Take: What’s the Bottom Line?

The Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night is a versatile mattress that will work well for a wide variety of sleepers, thanks especially to having multiple firmness options. Its standout feature is definitely the excellent edge support, but it excels in responsiveness as well. It’s not a top mattress for couples or hot sleepers, but it’s also not bad. The average sleeper will be comfortable on this mattress.

And while not a budget mattress, it’s a great mid-range mattress that is well within reach of many buyers. Serta doesn’t necessarily offer the best policies, such as the shorter warranty and sleep trial period, but it is a well established brand that has been in the mattress business for a long time.
