Serta Renewed Sleep Mattress Firmness and Feel

Serta Renewed Sleep Mattress Firmness

Our Mattress Nerd firmness scale ranges from 1–10, where 1 is as soft as a marshmallow. We found the Serta to be a 5.5/10 on this scale, or medium-soft. This firmness level works best for back and side sleepers typically. It could work for lighter stomach sleepers or even average-weight stomach sleepers, but the softness may hinder proper alignment.

What Does the Serta Renewed Sleep Feel Like?

It’s no surprise that the Serta Renewed Sleep Plush feels, well, plush. But the softness on the surface of the mattress doesn’t mean this bed doesn’t feel supportive, The feel is plush, but you stay elevated and aligned on the surface. Essentially, the mattress doesn’t swallow you whole.

Support and Pressure Relief by Sleeping Position

Back Sleepers

It is easy to find the best mattresses for back sleepers, because all they need is a bed that keeps the natural S-curve of the spine maintained. It does this well for lightweight and average-weight back sleepers. It’ll support heavyweight back sleepers as well, but they may find it too soft.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers need to keep their hips supported in order to stay aligned. The Serta mattress is just too soft for stomach sleepers of all sizes, but it will support lightweight stomach sleepers. I recommend average-weight and heavyweight sleepers try out a firmer version of this bed or the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers need a bed that keeps the spine in a straight line, preventing morning back pain, and relieves pressure from the hips and shoulders. The Serta mattress provides decent alignment and great pressure relief for average-weight and heavyweight side sleepers. Lightweight side sleepers may have some pressure issues in those shoulders. If this sounds like you, see the best mattresses for side sleepers.

Combination Sleepers

The best mattresses for combination sleepers are responsive and compatible with each position you find yourself in. The Serta Plush has above average responsiveness, but the more weight you put into the plush layers, the harder it can be to move.

We think lightweight combination sleepers, average-weight back and side combo sleepers, and heavyweight side and back combo sleepers will enjoy this bed.

Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  5 3 4
Average weight (130–230 lbs): 5 2 5
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  4 1 4

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Serta Renewed Sleep Mattress Performance

Is the Serta Renewed Sleep Mattress Cooling?

The surface of the Serta Renewed Sleep Plush is cool to the touch. The inside of the mattress includes gel-infused foam and breathable coils. We gave this bed a 4/5 in temperature control, because it should keep you temperature-neutral and add a slight cooling sensation. We consider this Serta to be one of the best cooling mattresses.

Edge Support

The level of support you get around the perimeter of the mattress is referred to as edge support. This performance factor is important for seniors who need the extra help getting in and out of bed, couples who want to utilize the whole sleep space, and people who use the edge to get ready or sleep. When it comes to Serta’s edge support, it’s really solid. Five out of five.

Responsiveness

We gave the Serta mattress a 3.5/5 for responsiveness, or ease of movement. The mattress is very bouncy thanks to the coil layer. But, it is easy to feel stuck while changing positions in the plush foam, especially as you apply more weight.

Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?

Motion transfer across the mattress can be a nightmare for you and your bed partner is one or both of you are light sleepers. We tested Serta’s motion isolation by placing a beaker of water on one side of the bed and tossing a weighted ball on the other side to gauge the movement of the liquid. The coils made the liquid pretty sloshy, but nothing out of hand. So, we gave it an average score of 3/5.

Noise

The pocketed coils inside the mattress are slightly squeaky with vigorous activity, but nothing too loud or distracting.

Pain Relief

We use pressure relief mapping technology to determine the level of shoulder, hip, and back pain relief in a bed. The colors along the body indicate areas of low and high pressure: cool colors (blue and green) are good and warm colors are not (yellow, orange, and red).

When our lighter tester lay on the Serta on her side, there was a bit of red in the shoulders, but every other map had blues and greens. The average-weight map saw great results, and the heavy map looked great everywhere except the tiny bit of yellow in the hips and shoulders.

Sex

Serta is a good mattress for sex. It’s durable, cooling, and easy to move around on.

Off-Gassing

The Serta Renewed Sleep mattress arrives full size rather than compressed in a box, so there should be no noticeable off-gassing smell.

Durability

We take a good look at the materials and construction to determine if a mattress is durable or not—even going as far as to cut into the mattress and look at the layers. We think the Serta Renewed Sleep bed has great durability thanks to the robust profile, reinforced edges, and supportive coils.

Serta Renewed Sleep Mattress Construction: What’s it made of?

The Serta Renewed Sleep Plush mattress is super tall at 15”, and is made with a combination of foam and coils. Here, we’ll take a good look at each layer to determine how it informs performance. In other words, a mattress’s construction can help determine if a bed has everything you’re looking for.

CoolFeel™ Cover: The mattress cover is cool to the touch and eco-friendly because it’s made with USDA Certified plant-derived materials. The cooling comes from the Phase Change Material in the cover, which the brand claims helps draw heat away from your body.

HexCloud™ Gel Memory Foam: This first comfort layer is something the brand calls their HexCloud™ gel memory foam, which essentially means it’s cut into tiny little hexagons that help with contouring and cooling.

WonderCloud™ Memory Foam: Then, we have another layer of cradling memory foam.

Coil Support System: Finally, we have our support layer: a system of pocketed coils for support, bounce, breathability, and motion isolation. A little bonus? Serta claims this mattress has some of the best edge support features built in, and we’re inclined to agree. But more on that later.

How Much Does the Serta Renewed Sleep Mattress Cost?

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

Serta has a pretty long shipping time: four to six weeks. Once your mattress is ready to ship, Serta will contact you about setting up a delivery time (usually any Monday–Saturday). Your mattress will arrive full size. If you’d like to opt for white glove delivery (mattress setup and mattress removal), there is an additional $150 fee.

The mattress arrives full size, wrapped in plastic. You just remove it from the plastic in the room of your choice.

Warranty

Serta offers the industry-standard 10-year mattress warranty. It covers loose wires, manufacturing defects, and sagging or impressions an inch and a half or deeper. Make sure you register your mattress, use the proper foundation, and put on a mattress protector to avoid voiding your warranty.

Upon filing a warranty, just know that you will be responsible for the cost of transportation.

Trial Period & Returns

A mattress trial period gives you time to sleep on your new bed in your home before the window for free returns close. Serta offers you a 120-night sleep trial, which is longer than the industry standard.

To return the mattress, contact Serta, and they will have the mattress picked up from your home at no cost to you. After removal, you will receive a full refund.

Addressing Serta Renewed Sleep Mattress Complaints

  • Sagging and defects: We came across a few reviews that complained of sagging or defects within the first few years. Serta does have a 10-year warranty that covers any manufacturer defects and sagging and inch and a half or deeper. To file a claim, visit Serta’s website and fill out the warranty claim form.
  • Firmness level expectation: A few reviewers complained of the mattress being softer or firmer than expected. We recommend trying out the mattress for 30 nights to fully break it in. After that, if you still don’t jive with the firmness, reach out to Serta during your 120-night trial period to exchange or return your bed.

Serta Renewed Sleep Mattress FAQs

Do you need a mattress protector?

No, you don’t need a mattress protector, but we do recommend it. Spills and accidents can void your warranty and shorten the life of your mattress by damaging the materials. The last thing you want is a defective mattress you can’t return because you didn’t use a mattress protector.

Which Serta Perfect Sleeper mattress is best for side sleepers?

The Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Sleep Plush is the best mattress for side sleepers, of course. The plush firmness level and pressure-relieving layers work well for the average side sleeper. Plus those supportive, pocketed coils keep you aligned. Those are the two main things side sleepers need in a bed.

How long does a Serta Perfect Sleeper mattress last?

A Serta Perfect Sleeper mattress should last you its entire lifetime, which is about seven to 10 years. We think that the 15-inch height, system of supportive coils, and reinforced edges will make for a very durable mattress. If it sags during this time, you can cash in your warranty.

The Nerd’s Take: What’s the Bottom Line?

The Serta Renewed Sleep Plush mattress is best for hot sleepers, back sleepers, and seniors. We also think heavyweight side sleepers who prefer a plush feel will love it as well. Lightweight side sleepers and most stomach sleepers may want to search for a different bed.
