Zoma Hybrid Mattress Review

The Zoma Hybrid promises better sleep and quicker recovery times for athletes and active people alike. Athletes such as Gavin Lux of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Edmond Sumner of the Indiana Pacers and Rigo Sanchez of the Indianapolis Colts all pose with their Zoma boxes on the Zoma website. But how did the mattress perform in our Sleep Lab?

We Nerds would choose the Zoma Hybrid for our fantasy mattress league because it’s a durable, quality mattress—featuring three pressure-relieving zones of targeted support—made up of both gel memory foam and individually pocketed coils. Plus, the bed features many cooling properties to keep athletes and hot sleepers sweat-free throughout the night.

So, let’s blow the whistle and scroll down to start our Zoma Hybrid review (if you’re more of a fan than an athlete, feel free to nosh on wings while you read).

Is the Zoma Hybrid Mattress Mattress for You?

Zoma Hybrid Mattress Firmness and Feel

Zoma Hybrid Mattress Firmness

At Mattress Nerd, we rank firmness on a 1 to 10 scale, with 6.5 being medium firm. In the case of the Zoma Hybrid, the gel memory foam layer on top features three areas of targeted zoned support. This means that you should find the mattress to be firmer in the middle to support your hips and lower back. It’ll also be a bit cushier at the head and shoulder zone, as well as at the upper and lower legs zone, to promote healthy spinal alignment. Overall, this is a firm mattress, and we gave it a firmer-than-average score of 7. When we lay down on the bed in our sleep lab, we quickly sank through the first memory foam layer and found the next Reactive response layer to be quite dense and supportive. A firmer mattress provides support for larger sleepers, but you may want to check out our list on the best mattress for heavy people for other supportive options.

What Sleeping Position Is Zoma Hybrid Mattress Best For?

Body Type:BACK SLEEPERSSTOMACH SLEEPERSSIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): 555
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs):434
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): 322

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Back Sleepers

For back sleepers, this Zoma Hybrid is one slam dunk of a mattress. Of all the sleep positions, we found that this bed to be the performs best mattress for back sleepers, compared to other positions. Its targeted three-zone support layer helps to keep the spine in a healthy “S” curve by supporting the head, shoulders and lower lumbar area while allowing the hips to dip into the mattress just right. Of course, how a bed feels depends on your weight: Lightweight and average-weight back sleepers should find plenty of support on the Zoma Hybrid. But if you’re pushing up to 230 lbs. or more (our heavyweight category), you may want to look elsewhere at a sturdier innerspring mattress.

Stomach Sleepers

So, we’re going to have to call a timeout for most stomach sleepers on the Zoma Hybrid. While lightweight stomach sleepers can find proper support and spinal alignment on this mattress, they are in the minority. Yes, tinier tummy sleepers will keep their hips elevated, preventing them from sinking too far down into the mattress. However, as the pounds increase, the support lessens, so we recommend that average-weight and heavyweight stomach sleepers find a more supportive mattress. To find just that, see our picks for the best mattress for stomach sleepers.

Side Sleepers

By far the most popular position, side sleepers comprise up to 80 percent of all sleepers, according to online sleep surveys. And side sleepers should be happy on the Zoma Hybrid, especially lightweight and average-weight folks. The bed’s targeted three-zone comfort layer allows the shoulders and the hips to dip into the mattress, promoting lateral spine alignment and cushioning the joints. The overall effect is whole-body contouring and relief for pain-causing pressure points. However, heavyweight side sleepers will want to look toward sturdier innerspring mattresses or hybrid beds that have thicker comfort layers above the pocketed coils. For mattresses with similar pressure-relieving abilities, check out our best mattress for side sleepers.

Combination Sleepers

Combination sleepers are busy folks: They move from their back, to their side, to their stomach and back again, all . . . night . . . long. This much movement requires a responsive mattress with enough bounce to allow for all the sleep-shifting. The Zoma Hybrid fits this description for lightweight and average-weight combination sleepers. But heavyweight combination sleepers may find themselves sinking too deeply into the mattress to be able to move around comfortably. See our picks on the best mattress for combination sleepers for more options.

Zoma Hybrid Mattress Performance

Is the Zoma Hybrid Mattress Cooling?

Designed with athletes in mind—active people with higher metabolisms naturally sleep hotter—the Zoma Hybrid features cooling components throughout the mattress, starting with the airy cover. This breathable, ventilated fabric wicks away heat and moisture, helping you stay cool throughout the night. It even felt cool to the touch when we placed our hands on the mattress in our lab, making it one of the best mattresses for hot sleepers. Next, the company claims that cooling channels in the gel memory foam layer are six times more breathable than average memory foam. Individually pocketed coils in the base also increase airflow throughout the mattress, signaling a refreshing and sweat-free slumber.

Edge Support?

Like with the motion transfer test, the Zoma Hybrid also beat our expectations on edge support, especially when compared to the original all-foam Zoma, which you can read all about in our Zoma Mattress Review. Edge support is important if, say, your sleep partner hogs the middle of the mattress, forcing you to lie along the edge. A mattress with good edge support will protect on-the-edge sleepers from feeling as if they’ll roll off onto the floor. If you sit on the edge of your mattress to do things like tie your shoes, you’ll also want good edge support, so that your rear doesn’t collapse down onto the bed frame. Sporting a sturdy, stable pocketed-coil base, the Zoma Hybrid has got you covered from every angle.

Responsiveness

We find it very easy to maneuver around on top of this mattress, making it a great choice for those with mobility issues or combination sleepers who change positions throughout the night. When we tested the original all-foam Zoma mattress, we found the slow-moving memory foam difficult to shift around in, so the new Zoma Hybrid is a marked improvement when it comes to responsiveness and ease of movement. For those who enjoy a memory foam feel, there is a bit of that effect right on the top of the mattress, before you push down into the bouncier Reactiv response layer (keep scrolling for more on construction).

Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?

Why is motion isolation important for couples? If you sleep with a partner, when they change positions or jump up for a snack run, that movement can cross over the mattress and disturb your sleep. Despite a bouncier quality thanks to its Reactiv response layer and its hybrid design with individually pocketed coils, the Zoma Hybrid performed well in our motion transfer tests. This is surprising because typically all-foam mattresses absorb motion the best. But when we tested the mattress by placing a full glass of wine on one side while rolling around on the other, the wine didn’t spill, making this mattress a great mattress for couples seeking a peaceful night’s sleep.

Zoma Hybrid Mattress Construction: What’s it made of?

_wp_attachment_image_alt

Layer #1: Airy Cover

We like the design of the Zoma Hybrid’s breathable cover, with its high-tech, gray graphics and contrasting bright orange logo. It makes us feel sporty, inspiring us to put on our sneaks and go for a run. Just like a pro jersey, the cover is made of ventilated performance fabric (think ultra-stretchy knit). But we did find it to be a little thin, causing us to question its overall durability.

Layer #2: Cooling Comfort

The top layer of this mattress features cooling gel memory foam, which is especially beneficial to athletes and highly active people with high metabolism rates—in other words, they sleep hot! Zoma designs this foam to be soft and contouring while wicking away body heat. Even better, the foam’s patented three-zone Triangulex support provides pressure relief for pain-causing pressure points, such as the shoulders and the hips.

Layer #3: Responsive Relief

The Reactive response layer acts as a buffer between the top layer of gel memory foam and the bottom layer of individually pocketed coils. This gives the bed a bouncier effect so you don’t feel as if you’re sinking too deeply and stuck in the mattress. This Responsive Relief layer will have you primed and ready to jump out of bed for that 6 a.m. Bootcamp session—or at least a few yoga sun salutes. If you aren’t an athlete but need pressure relief, the Zoma could be a great mattress for hip pain.

Layer #4: Durable Support

The base layer is where the Zoma hybrid gets serious: It houses hundreds of individually pocketed coils promoting proper spinal alignment, which can help alleviate back pain. The coils add a good dose of durability—typically hybrid mattresses with coils last longer than all-foam beds—as well as all-important edge support. This means that when you sit on the edge of the mattress to lace up your Air Jordans, you won’t feel as if you’re going to slide off onto the floor.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

Zoma offers free shipping and returns on all mattresses delivered within the lower 48 states. Shipping rates apply to Alaska and Hawaii, and you can reach out to support@zomasleep.com for these additional costs. Typically, orders leave the Zoma facility within three to five business days and arrive via FedEx with curbside delivery within one to five business days.

As for unboxing, it took the Mattress Nerd team less than two minutes to unbox the Zoma Hybrid and position it on the frame, so we give this bed-in-a-box high marks for ease of opening. Once unboxed, the mattress did not emit any harsh off-gassing smells; they were truly faint and dissipated immediately.

Warranty

Zoma protects its mattresses with a 10-year warranty—after all, most mattresses should be replaced every seven to 10 years. During that time period, the customer is covered for a full repair or replacement in the event of workmanship and structural defects. For example, a defect can include the deterioration in the cell structure of the mattress that causes the bed to have a visible indentation greater than .75”. But in order for this sinkage to be covered, it cannot be associated with sagging in the foundation or platform.

Trial Period & Returns

If you don’t love your Zoma mattress, you’re protected by a 100-night sleep trial. Typically, it takes the body at least 30 days to adjust to a new bed. Still, according to the company’s return policy, you can return the mattress any time within the first 100 nights and get a full refund.

Comparing the Zoma Mattress

Zoma Hybrid Mattress vs. Bear Pro Mattress

Both the Zoma Hybrid and the Bear Pro are designed with athletes and active people in mind. But there is one major difference: The Zoma Hybrid features individually pocketed coils in the base layer, allowing for more breathability and bounce, whereas the Bear Pro is an all-foam mattress, which means it could tend to sleep more hot.

Additionally, the Zoma Hybrid features targeted zoned support in its gel memory foam layer, which could benefit back sleepers who require more lumbar support. The Bear Pro isn’t quite as firm as the Zoma Hybrid, which means it could be a better match for side sleepers. Neither mattress is a good choice for heavyweight sleepers (anyone over 230 lbs.), as these individuals require more support.

Zoma Hybrid Mattress vs. Casper Original Mattress

Targeted zoned support is a major benefit for both the Zoma Hybrid and the Casper Original mattresses. This zoned support system is found in the top layer of memory foam on the Zoma, and it’s the second layer of foam on the Casper. On both mattresses, this three-zoned layer is firmer toward the center and softer toward the head and foot of the bed to relieve pain-causing pressure points, such as the shoulders and the hips.

The main difference between these two mattresses is that the Zoma is a hybrid mattress, a combination of memory foam and individually pocketed coils, which add bounce and allow the bed to breathe. The Casper is a memory foam mattress; still, we found its design to have an adequate amount of responsiveness, rather than the feel of slow-moving memory foam. For those who prefer the airflow and bounce of a hybrid mattress, the Casper also comes in a hybrid version.

Zoma Hybrid Mattress vs. Saatva Mattress

Both the Zoma Hybrid and Saatva mattresses have ranked high for athletes and folks with an active lifestyle, but they feel very different. While the Zoma is a more modern hybrid combination of individually wrapped coils and memory foam, the Saatva is a classic innerspring mattress that will accommodate heavier people (greater than 230 lbs.).

The Saatva features two layers of supportive coils, as well as a plush pillow top, to create a balance of comfort and support that’s good for any sleeping position. Innerspring mattresses also allow for a maximum amount of airflow for a cooler night’s sleep. Thus, lightweight memory foam lovers might prefer the Zoma, and heavier athletes who sleep hot might go for the Saatva.

Zoma Hybrid Mattress FAQs

Why does Zoma say it’s perfect for athletes?

Through cutting-edge design and technology, Zoma claims to foster faster muscle recovery, improved athletic performance and deeper sleep.

What kind of foundation should you use with a Zoma mattress?

While the company does not recommend a box spring, it does prefer a platform or slatted base, with slats no more than 3 in apart and at least .5 in. thick.

Does the Zoma emit harmful gas?

Zoma mattresses are made with CertiPur-US certified foam, meaning it””s free of harmful chemicals and low in volatile organic compounds. Sometimes beds-in-a-box naturally emit an odor upon opening due to the vacuum compression and shipping materials we Nerds lovingly call that new mattress smell. But when we opened the box in our sleep lab, there were hardly any off-gassing smells.

The Nerd’s Take: What’s the Bottom Line?

Whether you are an athlete or you just want to feel like one, the Zoma Hybrid is a good choice for lightweight sleepers of all sleep positions and for average-weight folks who sleep on their backs and sides. The mattress does not perform as well for average-weight stomach sleepers or for heavyweight sleepers who weigh 230 lbs. or more. Hot sleepers will enjoy the bed’s cooling qualities, from the airy cover, to the gel memory foam, to the breathable individually pocketed coils. Will this bed actually deliver on enhanced rest, pain relief and faster recovery times? At its medium price point, we think it’s worth a try to find out for yourself.
