Who Should Choose the DreamCloud Mattress?

  • Couples: The DreamCloud Original is a great fit for couples looking for a mattress with low motion transfer and great edge support.
  • Hot sleepers: DreamCloud’s breathable coil layer and cooling gel-infused foam layer are a great match for those who want to sleep cool at night.
  • Combination sleepers: The DreamCloud is bouncy and responsive thanks to its hybrid foam-and-coil construction.

Who Should Choose the Tuft & Needle Mattress?

  • Budget shoppers: The Tuft & Needle comes at an affordable price point compared to other mattress brands.
  • Back sleepers: The Tuft & Needle provides excellent support for lightweight to heavyweight back sleepers.
  • Lightweight and average-weight sleepers: The Tuft & Needle does a great job at accommodating sleepers under 230 lbs.

DreamCloud vs. Tuft & Needle: Top Similarities

  • Cooling: Both DreamCloud and Tuft & Needle contain cooling foam layers that help keep the sleeper cool.
  • Motion isolation: Both mattresses have low motion transfer qualities, which make them great for couples and people who co-sleep.
  • Back support: Both mattresses offer great back support and help maintain a healthy, neutral spine alignment.

DreamCloud vs. Tuft & Needle: Top Differences

  • Price point: The Tuft & Needle is much more affordable compared to DreamCloud.
  • Construction: While the DreamCloud is a hybrid mattress that features foam and innerspring coils, the Tuft & Needle only has memory foam.
  • Thickness: The 10” Tuft & Needle mattress is lower than the 14” DreamCloud Original mattress.

DreamCloud vs. Tuft & Needle: Firmness & Feel Differences

Wondering what sleeping on the DreamCloud and Tuft & Needle mattresses feels like? In this section, we’ll go into detail about how the DreamCloud compares against the Tuft & Needle mattress in terms of firmness and feel.

What’s the Firmness Of the DreamCloud & Tuft & Needle Mattresses?

Here at Mattress Nerd, we rate our mattresses using a firmness scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being as soft as a cloud and 10 as firm as a brick.

We gave DreamCloud a rating of medium-firm or around 6.5/10. The Tuft & Needle also got a medium-firm, 6.5/10 firmness rating.

What Do the DreamCloud & Tuft & Needle Mattresses Feel Like?

The DreamCloud Original has a true hybrid mattress feel. When we first lie down, we immediately felt the sink-in softness of its memory foam layers. However, the more we sank into the mattress, the more we felt the lift and support of the coil layers underneath, which made us feel like we were sleeping “on” the mattress instead of “in” it.

Being an all-foam mattress, the Tuft & Needle provides a balanced foam feel without the hugging memory foam sensation. It does a great job at contouring and conforming to the curves. Its comfort system consists of only one layer, so we didn’t sink too deep into the mattress. However, heavier sleepers like it’s not supportive enough to keep them lifted.

What’s It Like to Sleep On the DreamCloud & Tuft & Needle Mattresses?

Back sleepers won’t have many problems with the two mattresses since both offer great back support and do a great job at maintaining good spine alignment. When it comes to stomach sleepers, the firmer DreamCloud offers better support for the hips. Side sleepers, however, may have a comfier time sleeping on the Tuft & Needle. Both mattresses are responsive enough to accommodate combination sleepers, but we like DreamCloud a bit more because of the strong edge support. Generally, though, heavier sleepers will sleep better on the DreamCloud instead of the thinner Tuft & Needle.

The DreamCloud vs. Tuft & Needle Mattresses By Body Type

DreamCloud Performance By Body Type & Sleeping Position:

Body Type:BACK SLEEPERSSTOMACH SLEEPERSSIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): 5
Average-weight (130–230 lbs):53
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): 5

Tuft & Needle Performance By Body Type & Sleeping Position:

Body Type:BACK SLEEPERSSTOMACH SLEEPERSSIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): 554
Average-weight (130–230 lbs):545
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): 434

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Average-Weight Sleepers (130–230 lbs)

Both the DreamCloud and Tuft & Needle are fantastic mattress choices for average-weight back sleepers, but we have to give more points to DreamCloud for having better pressure relief. The slightly softer Tuft & Needle may be the better option for side sleepers, but we think both of them may feel too firm for strict side sleepers.

Oppositely, both mattresses may feel too soft and not supportive enough for stomach sleepers who need their hips lifted. Both mattresses offer great responsiveness, making them good options for combination sleepers, but DreamCloud is the better pick for its bouncy coil layer.

Heavyweight Sleepers (> 230 lbs)

When it comes to heavyweight sleepers of all sleeping positions, we recommend DreamCloud over Tuft & Needle. This is because of its thicker mattress profile and more supportive foam-and-coil construction. We think heavier sleepers will feel like they sink in too much on the Tuft & Needle which can lead to body pain.

However, some heavyweight stomach sleepers may feel like DreamCloud is too soft. For optimal support and comfort, we recommend getting firmer and more supportive mattresses from our best mattresses for heavy people list.

Lightweight Sleepers (< 130 lbs)

Lightweight back sleepers will sleep comfortably on both mattresses, as both offer plenty of back support and cushion. Side sleepers will probably find the softer Tuft & Needle a more comfortable option as the DreamCloud may feel too firm, especially for strict side sleepers. Both mattresses are also great for lightweight stomach sleepers, but the firmer DreamCloud will probably be more comfortable and supportive on the hips. Lastly, lightweight combination sleepers should be happy with both mattresses, but because of its bouncy and responsive coil layer, we think DreamCloud is the better pick.

Differences In Mattress Construction

The DreamCloud Original is a 14” hybrid mattress, while the original Tuft & Needle is a 10” all-foam mattress. Here’s how DreamCloud and Tuft & Needle compare in terms of mattress construction.

DreamCloud Mattress Materials Tuft & Needle Mattress Materials
“Soft-to-the-Touch” CoverPolyester Blend
Gel-infused Foam Layer3” Adaptive Foam
“Sink-in-Just-Right” Transition Layer
Individually Wrapped Coil System + Base Foam Layer7” High-Density Support Foam

Cover

DreamCloud’s cover is made from a combination of cashmere-blend fabric and quilted foam that feels as soft as a cloud. The Tuft & Needle has a white knit fabric cover that’s breathable and helps regulate temperature.

Comfort Layers

DreamCloud’s comfort layer is made from cooling gel-infused foam that prioritizes sleeping cool and providing pressure relief. Tuft & Needle’s proprietary Adaptive Foam layer contains air pockets, graphite, and ceramic gel to keep the sleeper cool and comfy all night.

Support Layers

The DreamCloud Original uses an individually wrapped coil support system with a base foam layer, while the Tuft & Needle has a 7″ high-density support foam layer.

DreamCloud vs. Tuft & Needle Mattress Performance Ratings & Differences

Temperature

One of the worst feelings is waking up in the middle of the night covered in sweat. DreamCloud’s cooling gel-infused foam top layer and breathable coil system help wick moisture and heat away from the sleeper’s body.

Meanwhile, the Tuft & Needle disappointed in this area. A common complaint from online reviews is that the bed traps too much heat, and in our tests, we found that to be true. This is a typical trade-off, though, with a memory foam bed.

Motion Transfer

If you’re sharing your bed with someone, you’ll want to get a bed that has low motion transfer. Having low motion transfer means that you won’t likely feel your cosleeper’s movements in bed, which is helpful if you’re a light sleeper.

Despite being a hybrid coil mattress, the DreamCloud Original did fairly well in our testing. Lying down on it, we didn’t really feel the other person’s movements, even if they tried to get in and out of bed. As for the Tuft & Needle, it also has excellent motion isolation, owing to its motion-isolating all-foam construction.

Edge Support

Here’s a test: sit or lie down at the edge of your mattress. If you find yourself falling off easily, then it only means that your mattress has poor edge support. Edge support is important for those who want to maximize their mattress space or older sleepers who need extra support when going in and out of bed.

In terms of edge support, we think the DreamCloud Original excels over the Tuft & Needle mattress. Thanks to its sturdy pocketed coil system, the DreamCloud’s sides are held up pretty well. On the other hand, the Tuft & Needle mattress was so-so. We still felt comfortable sleeping on its sides, but it really doesn’t hold up well when you sit on it.

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief is a mattress’s ability to relieve pressure and tension along the body’s pressure points.

Hybrid mattresses tend to perform well in terms of pressure relief, so it’s no surprise that the DreamCloud mattress has great pressure-relieving capabilities. Its medium-firm foam layers do a great job at evenly distributing the body weight and contours closely to the body.

The Tuft & Needle mattress is also good at pressure relief because of its deeply contouring Adaptive Foam layer. We noticed that it does a great job of cradling our pressure points and relieving tension.

Pain Relief

Lightweight to average-weight sleepers experiencing back or hip pain should find DreamCloud comfy and supportive. However, strict side sleepers may want to look elsewhere since we noticed that there was pressure build-up around the hips and shoulders, which is probably due to DreamCloud’s medium-firm feel.

As for Tuft & Needle, we think average-weight sleepers (in general) and lightweight back sleepers experiencing back, hip, and joint pain will sleep comfortably. However, we don’t really recommend this mattress for heavyweight sleepers looking for relief.

Durability

A mattress is an investment, so you’ll want to make sure that you’re getting your money’s worth.

The DreamCloud Original is very durable because of its durable coil layers and will probably last you around seven to ten years, depending on the daily wear and tear it goes through. Another thing we like about it is that it’s covered by a Lifetime warranty, in case you encounter any defects.

Though also durable, the Tuft & Needle’s all-foam construction is susceptible to softening and sagging. We think its foam layers are relatively low density, so it’ll sag more quickly if heavier sleepers use it. We think it’ll last you around 6 to 7 years with normal wear. It comes with a 10-year warranty.

Our Final Take

Both the DreamCloud Original and original Tuft & Needle are great mattress options, but they each excel over the other in certain aspects.

If you want a highly responsive mattress that prioritizes pressure relief, the DreamCloud Original should be your main pick. It’s also what we would recommend to seniors and couples looking for a mattress with low motion transfer and great edge support. But if you want a bang-for-the-buck budget mattress option, you can’t go wrong with the Tuft & Needle. We also recommend this mattress for hot sleepers who prefer the hugging feel of foam layers.

DreamCloud & Tuft & Needle FAQs

Do you have to flip a Tuft & Needle mattress?

No, no need to flip a Tuft & Needle mattress. Its mattress layers are constructed in a specific way, so flipping it would affect the level of support and comfort it’s meant to provide. However, you can rotate it. We recommend rotating it every 3 to 6 months.

What kind of mattress is DreamCloud?

The DreamCloud Original is a 14” luxury hybrid mattress that’s known for its motion isolation features, responsiveness, and pressure-relieving capabilities. It consists of a cooling gel-infused memory foam comfort system and an individually wrapped coil layer. It’s one of the more popular hybrid bed-in-a-box mattresses sold on the market.

Is a Tuft & Needle Mattress Firm or Soft?

Using our mattress firmness scale of 1 to 10 (with 1 being super plush and 10 being ultra-firm), the original Tuft & Needle gets a medium-firm rating or 6/10. At this firmness level, the Tuft & Needle can easily accommodate most sleeping positions.
