DreamCloud vs. Helix Midnight Overview

The more expensive DreamCloud delivers a cool night of sleep with ease of movement for those that change positions often. And you can’t get better back support than the gel-infused memory foam plus coil base. The Helix Midnight is ideal for side sleepers, thanks to the pressure relief from its memory foam “hug.” It also provides better breathability than an all-foam mattress due to the increased airflow from the coils.

Who Should Choose the DreamCloud Mattress?

  • Back Sleepers: You can’t get any better than the DreamCloud if you sleep on your back all night. This hybrid has just what it takes to cushion your body and provide support for a healthy spine.
  • Combination Sleepers: The DreamCloud’s foam layers are a bit bouncy and responsive which is good news if you toss and turn throughout the night. These movements should be easy to make and won’t wake you up.
  • Shoppers Looking for “Hotel-like” Bed: If you are in the market for a luxury mattress, the DreamCloud is a versatile pick that has the desired cushion on top and needed firmness underneath, just like most quality hotels provide.

Who Should Choose the Helix Midnight Mattress?

  • Side Sleepers: The Helix Midnight has a comfort layer of memory foam that responds more slowly to pressure. This provides extra cradling and relief for side sleepers.
  • Shoppers on a Budget: The Helix Midnight is a bit more affordable than the luxury DreamCloud.
  • Memory Foam Lovers who Sleep Hot: While both models have memory foam atop coils, the Helix Midnight’s “Memory Plus Foam” was slower to respond when our testers pushed their hands on it. This gives you more of the traditional memory foam feel, but with the increased airflow from the coil layer.

DreamCloud vs. Helix Midnight: Top Similarities

  • Construction: Both of these hybrids are made with foam comfort layers for cushion and pressure relief, plus an innerspring coil support layer with reinforced edges.
  • Couples: Both mattresses perform in ways couples will appreciate—isolating motion, providing full support to the edges of the mattress, and keeping things cooler than most memory foam mattresses.
  • Durability: Thanks to their similar construction, either purchase last for a good 7 to 10 years.

DreamCloud vs. Helix Midnight: Top Differences

  • Responsiveness: The Helix Midnight received an average score for ease of movement because of its more traditional “hugging” feel. The DreamCloud’s transition layer is more responsive, making it easier for those who toss and turn to change positions.
  • Sleeping Position: While both mattresses do an excellent job for most back and stomach sleepers, DreamCloud’s slightly firmer feel is a slightly better fit. In contrast, the Helix Midnight’s foam layer provides better pressure relief making it a good match for side sleepers.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers: Those in this category will only find average support and cushion on the Helix Midnight. The only exception is for side sleepers who found the pressure relief sufficient. And only heavyweight back sleepers will likely be pleased with the DreamCloud.

DreamCloud vs. Helix Midnight: Firmness & Feel Differences

At Mattress Nerd, we rate mattress firmness levels on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being the softest. Both the DreamCloud (6.5/10) and Helix Midnight (6/10) are considered medium-firm mattresses.

What’s the Firmness Of the DreamCloud & Helix Midnight Mattresses?

Lightweight and average-weight sleepers, no matter their preferred sleeping position, will be impressed with the Helix Midnight’s balance of cushion and support. Similarly, the DreamCloud surpasses expectations for back and stomach sleepers less than 230 lbs, but side sleepers will likely prefer the Helix.

Heavyweight sleepers will probably sink further than others and experience the DreamCloud’s firmness at more of a 7-8. This is not a problem for back sleepers, but other sleeping positions are better addressed in our list of best mattresses for heavy sleepers. If you’re shopping Helix, the Helix Plus is designed for heavy sleepers.

What Do the DreamCloud & Helix Midnight Mattresses Feel Like?

For those who love memory foam, both of these hybrids have something to offer over the old-school traditional memory foam. The DreamCloud has a responsive transition foam below the comfort layer, creating a bit of a bounce. Our testers described it as sleeping “on” the bed vs sinking into it. The Helix has the familiar cradle of the slow-to-respond foam, so you feel more of a “hug” sensation, without feeling “stuck.”

What’s It Like to Sleep On the DreamCloud & Helix Midnight Mattresses?

The DreamCloud received superior marks in every performance category, while back sleepers and stomach sleepers under 230 lbs will be the happiest with this purchase. Side sleepers might want to lean more towards a softer mattress, or one with more pressure relief to prevent tight shoulders and hips.

That’s where the Helix Midnight does a bit better. It’s versatile enough for any sleeping position for those under 230 lbs but excels at pressure relief for those that rest on thier side most of the night.

The DreamCloud vs. Helix Midnight Mattresses By Body Type

DreamCloud Performance By Sleeping Position:

Average weight (130 – 230 lbs):
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Average-Weight Sleepers (130–230 lbs)

Those in this weight range should find the DreamCloud more than satisfactory, especially if you lie on your back or stomach for most of the night. Side sleepers will find some pressure relief, but if this is your primary sleeping position, instead check out softer mattresses.

The Helix Midnight is almost the opposite scenario. It does a great job for those of you who prefer sleeping on your front or back, but really excels at cushioning for side sleepers.

Heavyweight Sleepers (> 230 lbs)

Neither of these mattresses are ideal for heavyweight sleepers. The only exception is the stomach sleeper on the DreamCloud. It even made our list of best mattresses for heavy people because of its firmness and ability to support a healthy spine. The Helix Midnight might be worth considering if you’re a heavyweight side sleeper with a partner of differing weight.

Lightweight Sleepers (< 130 lbs)

If you’re a lightweight sleeper who prefers sleeping on your back or front, you’ll find the DreamCloud slightly outperforms the Helix Midnight. But it can’t compete when it comes to side sleeping.

The Helix Midnight is a side sleeper’s dream. And if you’re a combination sleeper who tosses and turns a bit between your back, front, and side, the Helix Midnight is more versatile. Because of your lighter weight, you shouldn’t feel stuck when trying to change positions.

Differences In Mattress Construction

The 14″ DreamCloud and 12″ Helix Midnight are both hybrid mattresses with a foam/coil/foam sandwich of materials that provides varying performance features.

Cover

We did a double-take when we read the DreamCloud’s cover label…cashmere and foam blend. But our testers agree it is as soft and luxurious as it claims. The Helix Midnight comes with a slightly stretchy, breathable cover, but you can also upgrade to their GlacioTex cooling cover which boasts extra cooling technology. (We did not have this version in our Nerd lab to test, though.)

Comfort Layers

The DreamCloud and Helix Midnight both have a comfort layer of memory foam, but the DreamCloud’s is gel-infused which does help it draw heat away from your body at night.

Support Layers

Both mattresses have a transition layer of foam atop the individually-wrapped innerspring coils. This keeps you from sinking in too far and feeling those coils. And they each have a thin foam layer at the base to provide additional support to the mattress.

DreamCloud vs. Helix Midnight Mattress Performance Ratings & Differences

Temperature

Both of these hybrid mattresses have a coil support layer, which is well-known for good airflow, keeping things cooler for you at night. While the DreamCloud and Helix Midnight both perform above average at temperature neutrality, it is worth noting that the DreamCloud’s comfort layer has gel-infused memory foam, whereas the Helix does not. If overheating is your top concern, check out our best cooling mattresses.

Motion Transfer

If you sleep with a partner, pet, or child, you don’t want their movement to wreck your rest, so motion isolation is a key performance factor for you. The memory foam layers of the DreamCloud and Helix Midnight do a great job of keeping movement from transferring across the mattress. And the innerspring coils are individually-wrapped which also helps with motion isolation.

Edge Support

Have you ever sat on the edge of a bed and then fallen right off? Not fun. But did you know that good edge support also creates more usable sleep space on a mattress? Additionally, seniors need stability to support them when getting on and off the bed slowly. If this is a priority for you, both the DreamCloud and Helix Midnight excel at edge support thanks to their coil bases with reinforced edges.

Pressure Relief

The DreamCloud is a great pick for most back and stomach sleepers, but side sleepers (especially under 130 lbs) won’t get as good of pressure relief for your hips and shoulders.

The Helix Midnight has what the company calls their “Memory Plus Foam” in its comfort layer. This provides excellent pressure relief, making it a good fit for side sleepers whose shoulders and hips tend to collect pressure.

Pain Relief

A healthy spine can help prevent back pain, so picking a mattress is an important decision. You need one that supports the natural “S” of your spine (for back sleepers) and keeps your hips and tailbone slightly elevated (for stomach sleepers). The DreamCloud has what it takes for back and stomach sleepers in the lightweight and average-weight categories. And it even made our list (for heavyweight stomach sleepers) as one of the best mattresses for back pain.

The Helix Midnight shouldn’t cause any new back pain, having enough support for most sleepers, except heavyweight back and stomach sleepers. And its memory foam layer helps side sleepers keep their spine in a nice straight line.

Durability

Both of these hybrids receive high marks for durability, as do most mattresses with innerspring coils. You should be able to enjoy your new mattress for a good 7 to 10 years, about the right time to replace old mattresses.

Shipping, Returns, & Warranties

DreamCloud

DreamCloud will ship your mattress free in the U.S., with a small fee for Alaska and Hawaii. And with a generous 365-night sleep trial period, plus a Lifetime warranty, there’s not much risk in trying out this luxury mattress.

Helix Midnight

Good news, Alaska and Hawaii! Helix ships to all 50 states for free. And the company offers a 100-night sleep trial period to test your mattress. If you decide to keep it, it’s covered by a 10-year warranty, which is about the time to replace an old mattress.

Our Final Take

The Helix Midnight’s slower-to-respond foam cradles you while you sleep while the coil layer provides breathability and edge support not found in traditional memory foam. If you’re able to spend a little more, the DreamCloud likely won’t disappoint. With stellar support and cushion for most back and stomach sleepers, this hotel-like bed sleeps cooler than the Helix Midnight.

DreamCloud & Helix Midnight FAQs

Is DreamCloud really worth it?

With the DreamCloud, you’re paying for amazing support for most back and stomach sleepers, as well as its cooling construction. There’s also superior motion isolation, responsiveness, and edge support, so you shouldn’t have buyer’s remorse. Plus it’ll last you around 10 years, making it a good investment in your sleep.

Is Helix Midnight too firm?

Like Goldilocks, it’s important to find the mattress that is “just right” for you. At a 6/10 on our firmness scale, the Helix Midnight is medium-firm which is a popular pick for its balanced feel of cushion and support. “Too firm” isn’t a common complaint for this Helix model.

Do DreamCloud mattresses sag?

All mattresses sag…eventually. The DreamCloud is durable and should perform well for about 10 years, which is when you should replace old mattresses anyway. The coil layer is longer-lasting, but the memory foam will begin to break down, forming lasting body impressions after around a decade of normal use.
