The Mattress Nerd’s Take: The Puffy pillow is a medium-firm pillow with a shredded memory foam fill. You can adjust the loft by adding and removing the fill, so it works for all three sleeping positions. Hot sleepers may have an issue with how the foam holds on to heat.

Who It’s Not Good For

  • Hot sleepers
  • Budget shoppers
  • Side sleepers with broad shoulders

Look Inside

The Puffy pillow is made of polyester, rayon, and shredded memory foam. The cover is a polyester and bamboo rayon blend. Rayon is a super soft and cooling fabric, plus the fabric blend is hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites.

You can also throw this cover into the washing machine—a double win for those with allergies. The cover unzips to reveal an inner sleeve filled with shredded memory foam. This inner sleeve also has a zipper, so you can remove or add as much fill as you need for your body type and sleep position

If you’re familiar with other Puffy sleep products, the Puffy pillow fill is a combination of the Cooling Cloud and Climate Comfort foam layers used in the Puffy mattress. This shredded memory foam fill contours around your head and cradles your neck. It has the right balance of pressure relief and contouring to keep your neck in alignment with your spine, which is helpful for those with neck or back pain.

Mattress Nerd Pillow Scores

Figuring out if a pillow works for you comes down to a few individual factors. Will it keep your temperature regulated at night? Does it support your sleeping position? Are you comfortable with the company’s policies? We go over all of these and more, plus add numerical scores to each factor.

Cooling: 2/5

The Puffy pillow comes with a breathable, bamboo rayon cover which will help with airflow, plus shredded foam allows more air to escape than a block of foam. However, it doesn’t change the fact that memory foam can hold on to a lot of heat, and I did experience that when I slept on the Puffy pillow. For cooler options, check out the best cooling pillows.

Alignment: 5/5

The primary purpose of a pillow is to keep your neck aligned with the rest of your spine. The ability to add or remove fill from the Puffy pillow allows you to customize the loft, so you can achieve optimal alignment tailored to your body type.

Adjustability: 5/5

The Puffy pillow comes with a zipper that allows you to adjust the shredded foam fill. It may take some trial and error to find what’s right for you, but it is 100 percent adjustable. It also comes in a Standard size and King size, which helps you get the right fit for your mattress.

Quality of Materials: 2.5/5

The pillow cover mixes high-quality bamboo rayon (a natural material) with polyester (a synthetic fabric). The polyester makes it more durable while bamboo adds softness and airflow. The foam fill is CertiPUR-US certified, meaning it’s free from harmful chemicals. That being said, I wouldn’t call the Puffy pillow “eco-friendly”—it’s simply safe and non-toxic.

Care: 3/5

Because foam is not washing machine safe, you cannot throw this whole pillow into the washer. But, you can completely remove and wash the cover. This helps extend the life of your pillow and helps out those with allergies. If you notice any off-gassing (aka, a new pillow smell), fluffing the foam should help the odor fade faster.

Customer Experience: 5/5

This pillow comes with a 101-night sleep trial and a Lifetime warranty—one of the most generous pillow policies we’ve ever come across.

Total Score: 3.8/5

Side Sleeping

Side sleepers need a pillow that perfectly fits the space between their head, neck, and shoulder. The Puffy comes lofty enough for most side sleepers, and you can adjust the fill without compromising pressure point cushioning if you need a lower loft.

However, I will say that most adjustable foam pillows come overstuffed with fill to accommodate side sleepers with broad shoulders or those who need an ultra-high loft. This is not the case with the Puffy pillow. For higher loft options, see the best pillows for side sleepers.

Side note: Puffy also makes some of the best mattresses for side sleepers, including the Puffy Lux and Puffy Royal hybrid mattresses and the original Puffy memory foam mattress. Check out our Puffy mattress review for more info.

Back Sleeping

Back sleepers need a pillow that keeps the neck in a neutral alignment without overextending. You’ll see a common theme here: the adjustability of the Puffy makes it one of the best pillows for back sleepers.

Stomach Sleeping

The best pillow for stomach sleepers is a relatively flat, supportive pillow. Because you can remove as much fill as you want, stomach sleepers should have no issues with the Puffy pillow. The only con is that you’ll probably have to remove a lot. I’m a stomach sleeper naturally, and I had to take out more than a couple of handfuls to get comfortable.

Pros/Cons

Pros

  • Adjustable: You can change the pillow’s firmness level and height. This adjustability allows it to work for all three sleeping positions.
  • Supportive: The shredded foam offers great head and neck support, and the adjustable fill creates one of the best pillows for neck pain.
  • Color Options: Not many pillows are available in multiple colors, but the Puffy pillow has two. So if you decide to forgo a pillowcase in favor of the washable cover, you’ll have a style decision to make.

Cons

  • Pricey: Because the Puffy pillow is versatile, it comes at a higher price tag. This is something budget-conscious shoppers should be aware of.
  • Not Plush: The foam inside the Puffy pillow gives you a gentle but firm cradling feel, so this pillow won’t be for you if you prefer a more traditional, plush, down feel.
  • Retains Heat: Despite good breathability, memory foam pillows like the Puffy have the potential to retain body heat, which can cause issues with overheating.

If you decide to keep your pillow, you’ll receive a Lifetime warranty. This covers any faulty materials or workmanship errors for the entire time you own the pillow. FAQs

Can you wash a Puffy pillow?

Yes and no. While you cannot wash the entire Puffy pillow, you can wash the pillow cover. Simply remove the pillow cover from the Puffy pillow, throw it in the washing machine on the gentle cycle with cold water, and put it in the dryer on low.

Where is Puffy located?

Puffy is a California-based company. The Puffy pillows are made in the U.S., so they should ship faster and have a lower price point than other companies who outsource their pillow process. This is part of the reason they offer such a generous trial and warranty combination.

The Puffy pillow is worth the money if youu2019re looking for something to eliminate neck pain, you arenu2019t sure which loft suits you best, or youu2019re looking for something that works for all sleep positions. If you sleep hot, this may not be the pillow for you.

The Nerd’s Final Take

The Puffy pillow uses shredded foam to create an adjustable pillow that works for all positions and most body types. The Puffy pillow isn’t for you if you’re a hot sleeper or want a more traditional, plush, down-like pillow. It’s also not quite lofty enough for side sleepers with broad shoulders. You’ll get 101 nights to try it out at home and a Lifetime warranty.
