Puffy vs. Puffy Lux Hybrid Overview

The Original Puffy mattress is made with three layers of gel-infused foam with a medium-firm feel. The Puffy Lux Hybrid builds on this with an additional layer of pocketed coils and contouring foams for deeper support and pressure relief.

Who Should Choose the Puffy Mattress?

  • Light and average-weight side sleepers. The Puffy’s three-layer foam construction is balanced but responsive, with the pressure relief side sleepers in this weight range need.
  • Light and average weight back sleepers. The dense base layer in the Puffy helps evenly distribute weight, while the pressure-relieving foams keep light-to-average weight sleepers comfortable.
  • Kids. With its medium firmness, the mattress will feel soft and supportive to smaller, lighter sleepers.

Who Should Choose the Puffy Lux Hybrid Mattress?

  • Hot sleepers. Breathable foams and six inches of coils in the support layer make this a good pick if you tend to overheat at night.
  • Couples. The cushioning foam in the Puffy Lux offers great motion isolation, so it works well for anyone who shares their bed with a partner, child, or pet.
  • People with back pain. High-density foam in the Puffy Lux supports the spine to relieve back pain.

Puffy vs. Puffy Lux Hybrid: Top Similarities

  • Cooling. The foams in both mattresses have an open-cell construction with gel infusion for cooler sleep, though the Puffy Lux does have the added benefit of a breathable coil layer to dissipate heat even more.
  • Pressure relief. The contouring foams in the Puffy and the Puffy Lux mean excellent pressure relief for most sleepers.
  • Trial and warranty. Puffy offers a 101-night sleep trial and a lifetime warranty on both mattresses.

Puffy vs. Puffy Lux Hybrid: Top Differences

  • Back support. With its additional support layers and high-density foam, you can expect a little more back support with the Puffy Lux.
  • Construction. While the Original Puffy mattress has an all-foam construction, the Puffy Lux is a hybrid mattress.
  • Firmness. The Puffy Lux has a medium-firm feel, while the Puffy Lux is a little softer, with a medium feel.

Puffy vs. Puffy Lux Hybrid: Firmness & Feel Differences

Puffy mattresses may share similar materials, but they feel slightly different.

What’s the Firmness Of the Puffy vs. Puffy Lux Hybrid Mattresses?

The Original Puffy is a true medium mattress. We put it at a 5.5 on the firmness scale, where 1 is soft like a cloud and 10 is as unforgiving as concrete. Light and average-weight sleepers will find it feels soft but supportive, though heavyweight sleepers may find it veers quite soft.

The Puffy Lux is slightly softer than the Original Puffy, coming in at a 5 out 10. It will have a soft, bean bag-like feel to light and average sleepers, a sensation that will only deepen for people with higher body weights.

What Do the Puffy vs. Puffy Lux Hybrid Mattresses Feel Like?

With its neutral firmness, the Puffy feels balanced but responsive. It’s easy to move around without feeling “stuck.” The Puffy Lux has a plusher, more luxurious feel, with a cradling sensation.

What’s It Like to Sleep On the Puffy vs. Puffy Lux Hybrid Mattresses?

Side and back sleepers will like the soft, supported feel of the Puffy Original, but stomach sleepers may find it lacks the support they need to keep the hips from dipping. The same is true on the Puffy Lux–while side sleepers will find ample cradling in the hips and shoulders, it won’t be ideal for stomach sleepers.

Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): 314

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Average-Weight Sleepers (130–230 lbs)

Average-weight back and side sleepers will sleep well on the Puffy. They won’t sink too deep to cause spinal issues in the back, and the pressure points of side sleepers in particular will be nicely cradled. Stomach sleepers, however, will probably do better with a firmer mattress that has less sinkage. The same is true of combination sleepers who spend a lot of time on their stomachs.

It’s a similar situation on the Puffy Lux. Side and back sleepers in this weight range should find the support and pressure relief they need for comfortable sleep, but stomach sleepers will find this mattress too pressure-relieving, leading to aches and pains in the morning. Combination sleepers will enjoy the responsiveness of the Puffy Lux, but it won’t be a good option if you switch to your stomach.

Heavyweight Sleepers (> 230 lbs)

The Puffy Original mattress isn’t well suited to back, side, stomach, or combination sleepers with higher body weights. It just doesn’t have adequate support to ensure proper spinal alignment.

Heavyweight sleepers should proceed with caution on the Puffy Lux as well. Back sleepers in this weight range may find they sink into the mattress too deeply, and stomach, side, and combination sleepers will also fare better with a firmer, more supportive alternative.

Lightweight Sleepers (< 130 lbs)

Lightweight sleepers should fare well on the Puffy mattress. The pressure-relieving foams are particularly well suited to back and side sleepers. However, it lacks the support stomach sleepers need, something combination sleepers should understand as well.

The Puffy Lux mattress is a great choice for lightweight back and side sleepers, but even lighter stomach sleepers may find themselves sinking into the mattress too far. Combination sleepers in this weight range who don’t spend much time on their stomachs should find it supportive and comfortable.

Differences In Mattress Construction

The Original Puffy mattress is 10 inches high, with three layers of foam. The Puffy Lux Hybrid is 12 inches, combining foam layers with individually-pocketed coils in a hybrid construction.

Puffy vs. Puffy Lux Hybrid Mattress Performance Ratings & Differences

Temperature

The gel infusion in the foam of the Puffy mattress helps neutralize some heat, but it’s not the coolest mattress on the market. The Puffy Lux, with its open-cell foam and coil layer, is a better option if cooler sleep is the goal.

Motion Transfer

Foam mattresses tend to offer decent motion isolation, but the Puffy Lux goes above and beyond if you’re looking for a great mattress for couples. It’s a great pick if you don’t want to be disturbed by a partner tossing and turning at night.

Edge Support

Both the Puffy and the Puffy Lux offer average edge support. There is some noticeable sinking, but you don’t get the sensation that you’re going to slide off, and there’s enough stability to stretch out along the perimeter.

Pressure Relief

The contouring foams in the Puffy and Puffy Lux offer great pressure relief, but likely not enough for heavyweight sleepers.

Pain Relief

For light to average sleepers, both the Puffy and the Puffy Lux mattresses have sufficient support and weight distribution to ensure proper spinal alignment, which is key for pain relief. However, neither mattress has the hip support stomach sleepers need, and that can cause new pain or make existing pain worse.

Durability

With its all-foam construction, the Original Puffy mattress won’t be as durable as the Puffy Lux Hybrid. Still, you can expect 6 to 7 years before signs of wear appear on the Puffy, and you’ll likely get an extra year or two on the Puffy Lux.

Our Final Take

The Puffy Lux is a thicker, softer mattress than the Puffy. While both offer pressure relief and accommodate light and average sleepers well, neither has the support for heavyweight sleepers or stomach sleepers in any weight range. Both mattresses have gel-infused foams for cooler sleep, but hot sleepers will likely do better on the Puffy Lux, thanks to its breathable coil layer.

Puffy vs. Puffy Lux Hybrid FAQs

Is the Puffy Lux better than the original?

It depends on your needs. The Puffy Lux builds on the original foam construction of the Original Puffy with an additional coil layer. The hybrid construction makes it a better option for hot sleepers and improves durability, but keep in mind that you’ll spend more for those features.

Which Puffy mattress is the softest?

The Puffy Lux is slightly softer than the Original Puffy mattress. It’s a 5 on the firmness scale, compared to the Puffy’s rating of 5.5. It feels plusher and more luxurious to the touch than the Puffy, much like a bean bag. The Puffy has a more balanced feel.

How long does a Puffy Lux mattress last?

With its hybrid construction, the Puffy Lux mattress should last between six and eight years before showing signs of wear. We don’t recommend the Puffy Lux for heavyweight sleepers–not only does it lack the support they need for alignment and pressure relief, but there will also likely be issues with premature sagging.
