Turmerry Mattress Firmness and Feel

Turmerry Mattress Firmness

At Mattress Nerd, our firmness scale ranges from 1–10, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest. The Turmerry is constructed with three latex layers of different firmnesses that you can rearrange to get the right feel. There’s a soft, medium, and firm layer.

When we tested the medium firmness, we gave it a 7/10, which on the firmer end of the medium-firm range. This firmness level is best for stomach and back sleepers.

The soft version falls at a 5/10 (medium-soft) and works best for the average back or side sleepers. The firm version is an 8.5/10 (firm), and stomach sleepers will find this the most comfortable.

What Does Turmerry Latex Feel Like?

The Turmerry mattress has a bouncy and responsive feel. Latex foam feels very buoyant, so you stay elevated on the surface and don’t sink in too much. The foam doesn’t contour to your body as well as memory foam, but it still feels pressure-relieving for back sleepers.

Support and Pressure Relief by Sleeping Position

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers need a mattress that will keep them aligned and supported. The medium and firm versions of the Turmerry do this best for lightweight and average-weight people. Heavyweight back sleepers may not find the support they are looking for on any of the firmness options, and should look at the best mattresses for back sleepers.

Side Sleepers

The best mattresses for side sleepers keep pressure off of the hips and shoulders and keep the spine in a straight line. The Turmerry does a great job of maintaining good spinal alignment; however, we saw pressure issues in the hips and shoulders of lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight people. The latex foam doesn’t do the best job at pressure relief.

Stomach Sleepers

All that stomach sleepers need out of a mattress is a firm and supportive enough surface to keep their hips elevated. This ensures that their lower back stays in alignment.

The medium and firm versions of the Turmerry do a great job at lifting the hips of most stomach sleepers, but, lightweight and average-weight people will get the most out of this bed’s durability; it could break down quicker for heavyweight sleepers.

I recommend heavy people try a bed with supportive coils or check out the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

Combination Sleepers

Combination sleepers need a mattress that supports all of their sleep positions and is responsive enough to provide easy movement from one position to the next. Lightweight sleepers will have the easiest time changing positions on the Turmerry. Average-weight and heavyweight people have a more difficult time moving on this all-foam mattress.

Heavyweight (> 230 lbs) 3 3 2

Turmerry Mattress Performance

Is The Turmerry Mattress Cooling?

Latex foam is a naturally cooling material, and the foam used in Turmerry also features breathable holes to allow body heat to escape. The only red flag for hot sleepers is the wool layer that the brand says should add “warmth.” I would say overall this bed sleeps temperature neutral. If you sleep hot, check out our list of the best cooling mattresses.

Edge Support

Edge support is how much the perimeter of the mattress supports your weight. Seniors and those with mobility issues need edge support to more easily get in and out of bed. Couples and those with sleeping partners need it to make the most of their mattress space.

The Turmerry mattress is made with Dunlop latex, which is firmer and denser than the other all-natural latex option, Talalay latex. As such, the edge support of the Turmerry holds up really well: we gave it a 4/5 for edge support. The reason we didn’t give it a 5/5 is the fact that the edges aren’t reinforced.

Responsiveness

The latex foam in Turmerry is pretty bouncy and responsive, but without the backup of supportive coils or innersprings, it is not as responsive as it could be. It’s definitely more difficult for heavier sleepers to move around, especially on the softer firmness levels.

Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?

Motion transfer is what often keeps light sleepers up at night when their partner moves around or gets up for a bathroom run. A bed with good motion isolation keeps movement on one side of the bed.

The Turmerry had very average motion isolation: it wasn’t horrible, but it wasn’t amazing either. If you’re a super light sleeper, I’d recommend a mattress from our best mattresses for couples list. If you aren’t as easily awoken, the Turmerry should work for you and your bed partner.

Noise

Because this is an all-foam mattress, there is no noise associated with the Turmerry.

Pain Relief

Turmerry is a great mattress for back pain. It relieves pressure from the low back of back sleepers and keeps the spines of side sleepers aligned. However, it’s a different story for hip and shoulder pain. When our testers lay on the pressure map, we saw a concentration of pressure in the hips and shoulders. So if you have hip pain or shoulder pain, the Turmerry may not be the best option for you.

Sex

A good mattress for sex is quiet, breathable, and responsive. The Turmerry checks all of these boxes: the foam is silent, the latex is bouncy and responsive, and the layers are breathable.

Off-Gassing

We didn’t notice any off-gassing smells after unboxing the Turmerry mattress. This is because of the natural latex used instead of memory foam.

Durability

Latex foam is one of the most quality, durable mattress materials. However, because you construct the mattress yourself by stacking foam layers, the materials need to line up. If the mattress is uneven or shifts over time, that could make the foam break down more quickly.

Turmerry Mattress Construction: What’s it made of?

The Turmerry mattress is made almost entirely of latex foam. It also features organic cotton and wool for natural comfort and breathability. Latex is naturally cooling and bouncy. Dunlop latex is less expensive, as well as more firm and dense when compared to Talalay latex.

Organic Cotton Cover: The Turmerry is wrapped in moisture-wicking cotton fabric that is also durable and breathable.

New Zealand Wool: A comfort layer that adds warmth to the mattress.

Organic Cotton Protector: This cotton sleeve is wrapped around each latex layer, and adds extra protection for the latex core.

Medium Organic Latex Foam: A standalone layer of Dunlop latex foam with a medium firmness. Put it on top for a medium feel.

Soft Organic Latex Foam: A standalone layer of Dunlop latex foam with a soft firmness. Put it on top for a soft feel.

Firm Organic Latex Foam: A standalone layer of Dunlop latex foam with a firm firmness. Put it on top for a firm feel.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

The Turmerry mattress ships free to all U.S. states except for Alaska and Hawaii. The mattress should get to you in 4–5 business days. White glove delivery (aka in-home setup) is not available through this company.

The Turmerry Latex isn’t like your typical bed-in-a-box mattress. It comes in two boxes with four separate pieces: a cover and three latex layers. Each latex layer is a different firmness, and you stack the layers based on the comfort level that works best for you.

Warranty

You have a 20-year warranty for the Turmerry Latex, starting the day you buy the mattress. Here is what it covers:

  • The original owner only
  • Cracks or splits in the foam
  • Body impressions deeper than 1.5”

Trial Period & Returns

Turmerry gives you up to 60 nights to try out your new mattress. During this timeframe, you get to decide if you want to keep the mattress or return it for a full refund. Comparing it to other mattress companies, they give you less time than the industry standard of 100 nights.

Even so, it takes about 30 nights to fully break in a new mattress, so you still have plenty of time to decide if the Turmerry latex is for you. If you want to return the bed before 30 nights, $59 will be deducted from your refund.

To return your mattress, contact customer service and they will have you donate your used mattress to a local charity. After donation, you will receive your refund.

Addressing Turmerry Mattress Complaints

  • Too Firm: A few reviewers feel that Turmerry is too firm. This mattress is made with Dunlop latex, which feels firmer compared to Talalay latex. The softest option is a 5/10, which is medium-soft—still a bit firm for a soft mattress. I would suggest Talalay latex or soft memory foam beds to side sleepers and back sleepers who prefer a softer bed.
  • You Have to Build It: You have to construct the Turmerry mattress yourself. This leaves room for human error such as uneven edges, which could make the bed break down more over time. Plus, latex foam is heavy. If you are a senior or are unable to lift materials to construct this bed, it could be troublesome.

The Turmerry Latex mattress is made with natural and organic materials: natural latex, organic wool, and organic cotton. You can pick from three firmness levels that all generally work best for back and stomach sleepers. The bed may be too firm and not pressure-relieving enough for side sleepers.
