American Freight Furniture & Mattress Overview

Established in 1994, American Freight Furniture and Mattress is a living room, bedroom, and dining room furniture and mattress company with warehouse-style store locations in more than 29 states. American Freight eliminates the middleman by buying direct from manufacturers and selling directly to customers. As such, they pass on savings from low overhead costs to shoppers. These low priced items can be found in more than 170 stores and online, but how do the company’s mattresses stack up to other providers in the mattress market?

Top 5 Mattresses Offered by American Freight Furniture and Mattress

Simons Beautyrest: Best Pillow-Top Mattress

Reason to Buy

Sealy: Best for Pain Relief

Reason to Buy

Sealy offers a wide range of innerspring, memory foam, and hybrid mattresses. They feature orthopedically correct and environmentally conscious designs that ensure maximum comfort and spinal alignment. All Sealy beds some with a 10-year guarantee and are handcrafted in an Australian manufacturing facility.

Stewart & Hamilton: Best Value

Reason to Buy

American Freight Furniture and Mattress is the only company that sells Stewart & Hamilton mattresses. The mattress brand has a selection that runs from soft to firm and includes innerspring mattresses, pocketed coil systems, pillow-tops, and more. These beds have a budget-friendly price point, but they aren’t as durable as other brands available at American Freight Furniture and Mattress stores.

Jamison: Best for Guest Bedrooms

Reason to Buy

Jamison Mattress is a brand of Solstice Mattress that’s well known for its hotel mattresses. They’re often used in Holiday Inn, Courtyard, and Marriott hotels. Hybrid and innerspring mattresses are among their offerings. These beds typically have high profiles (more than 10” on average) and come with a 5-year warranty, but they may have durability issues after the first few years.

NordicRest: Best Memory Foam

Reason to Buy

This affordable mattress brand offers all-foam mattresses, some of which have pocketed coil support systems in their core. In an independent study conducted by American Freight Furniture and Mattress, a focus group of 30 participants chose NordicRest five to one over Tempurpedic beds. Despite initial positive reviews, individuals who’ve owned the mattresses for a longer time period note that the edges begin to sag and comfort fades with time.

Online Alternatives

While American Freight Furniture and Mattress does have a shoppable website, customers interested in buying online will need to create an account with the company prior to purchasing their mattress. The company’s online selection isn’t as broad as the selection in their stores. There is also a more broad selection at online retailers like Amazon, Costco, Walmart, and Sam’s Club.

The advantage of shopping for a mattress online is that you can comparison shop between dozens of brands. The downside, however, is that American Freight Furniture and Mattress has relatively sparse product information in comparison with other third-party retailers and mattress manufacturer websites. Each product page on AmericanFreight.com only includes several photographs of the mattress, detailed product description and overview, product reviews, and a Q&A section.

Unfortunately, because American Freight focuses on discount mattress offerings, all mattress sales are final. This means that absolutely no returns or refunds are taken. The delivery teams are subcontractors who must be paid in cash (fees aren’t refundable), will not remove old furniture from your home, and don’t assemble the mattress for you. This makes it especially important to be sure the mattress you purchase is one you’re confident buying, which can be difficult to do without seeing, touching, and lying on the mattress in-person.

Pro and Cons of Buying in Store vs. Online

The qualities to look for in an online mattress are no different from those you’d look for when shopping in-store. You’ll want something comfortable, durable, fitted to your space, supportive, within your budget, and a match for your individual firmness and material preferences.

There are some pros to shopping online for a mattress, that mattresses bought online tend to be cheaper. However, American Freight Furniture and Mattress, claims to have the same prices in-store as they offer online. American Freight is constantly running sales and discounts on their products online and in-store, so additional offers sales, discount codes, or other perks for online shoppers may not exist at any point throughout the year.

Another pro to consider when shopping online is that you’ll bypass salespeople. Whatever your reason for wanting to do so, be it a bad experience with a pushy mattress customer service representative or a naturally individualistic nature, you won’t have to worry about anyone approaching you when you shop from the safety of your computer screen.

Unfortunately, AmericanFreight.com doesn’t offer one of the most impactful upsides that most online mattress stores do: generous shipping and return policies. As we mentioned, all sales at American Freight Furniture and Mattress are final, meaning there’s no trial period or free return if you don’t like your mattress.

In this case, that is a major con of shopping for a mattress online. If it’s your first mattress purchase or you’re not sure what you’re looking for, shopping at a brick-and-mortar mattress store can be helpful. Store associates should be equipped to teach you about mattress terminology that’s essential to know while shopping and they can guide you to a mattress that’s a good fit based on the sleep preferences, budget, size preference, and interest in special features you share with them.

Regardless of whether you decide to shop American Freight Furniture and Mattress online or in-store for your mattress, we recommend taking your time with the decision. Call the store ahead of time to learn about the stock they have available and keep in mind that American Freight Furniture and Mattress does not offer any returns or exchanges. You’ll want to arrive in-store or at your computer prepared for your shopping experience and with a very clear idea of what you want.
