There’s no worse feeling than buying a new mattress that’s marketed as comfortable, durable and high-quality only to notice sagging or body impressions soon after. In today’s mattress industry, there are thousands of brands, some of which promise their mattresses last more than 10 years when, in reality, they’re made with low-quality materials.

Because of this, sagging is one of the most common complaints from sleepers. All mattresses will begin to sag at some point, but a high-quality bed should hold its shape for at least as long as the company advertises. If you’re in pain on your current mattress or frustrated that every mattress you’ve chosen in the past has sagged quickly, keep reading for our top picks for mattresses that won’t sag.

Bottom Line: What’s the Best Mattress That Won’t Sag?

Our expert mattress testers chose the Saatva HD as the Nerd’s Pick for the best mattress that won’t sag due to its luxurious, comfort-focused materials, durability, and affordable price point.

Pros of the Saatva HD Mattress
Especially supportive for those over 230 lbs
Sleeps cool
May help prevent back pain
Good responsiveness
Cons of the Saatva HD Mattress
May not be soft enough for those who weigh less than 130 lbs
Side sleepers who weigh less than 230 lbs may prefer more pressure relief

If you’re interested in a luxury mattress at an affordable price point that you can trust won’t sag, the Saatva HD is a good bet. It’s constructed with a Euro-top cover, comfort layers of zoned latex, high-density memory foam and polyfoam, and a support system of steel coils encased in high-density polyfoam rails. The result is a firm (7/10) feel that’s comfortable yet supportive.

The Euro-top mattress cover adds some plushness to the top of the bed, but the denser comfort layers and foam-reinforced coils offer excellent stability and responsiveness. The Saatva HD should resist sagging, regardless of your body type. A Queen-size Saatva HD costs $2,595 before discounts and promotions are applied. Although this isn’t cheap, it’s a value price compared to other heavy-duty luxury hybrids. Keep in mind that this mattress is best for those who want a durable bed and weigh at least 130 pounds, as lightweight sleepers may find it too firm.

What our testers say: “I found the Saatva HD to feel both supportive and contouring enough to accommodate side, back, stomach, and combination sleepers, but it’s best to choose this bed if you weight over 230 lbs.” – Loren, Lead Mattress Tester

Pros of the Helix Plus Mattress
Good support for those over 230 lbs
Great for back and stomach sleepers
Sleeps cool
Cons of the Helix Plus Mattress
Side sleepers under 230 lbs. may need more cushioning
Not the most responsive
Not great at isolating motion

If you’re a stomach sleeper, you probably notice sagging in your mattress before any other sleeper type. This is because comfort in this position is dependent upon lift at the stomach and hips, which keeps the spine in alignment and prevents low back pain. As soon as there’s sagging in this area, it can be difficult to fall asleep at night. To make things more challenging, stomach sleepers often struggle to find a mattress that not only offers the support they need but can do so over long periods of time.

While designed for plus-sized sleepers, the Helix Plus can serve as the answer to these problems for almost anyone who’s a stomach sleeper and wants a bed they can rely on to not sag through the torso for years to come. The pocketed coils will work to keep the hips in line with the shoulders, preventing bowing in the low back. Even though the bed has a higher-than-average firmness level (7.5/10), it features two layers of memory foam that, although high-density, provide some cushioning.

What our testers say: “The Helix Plus’s combination of foam and coils gave me a firm, supportive feel. I also felt some bounce from the coil layer and softer cushioning from the top foam layers. I felt like I was sleeping on the mattress without sinking too deeply.” – Adrianne, Editor & Mattress Tester

Who Might Like the Helix Plus Mattress

  • Those with heavyweight (> 230 lbs) body types
  • Back sleepers
  • Stomach sleepers
  • Hot sleepers

Who Might Not Like the Helix Plus Mattress

  • Side sleepers under 230 lbs
  • Very light sleepers concerned about motion transfer
  • Combination sleepers

What Users Say:

On the Helix website, this mattress scored a 4.4 out of 5 stars, from 2,496 reviews. Praise is given to the ability of this mattress to helo alleviate back pain in sleepers. However, there were complaints about poor edge support and that they could feel the interior materials (the coils) of the mattress.

Pros of the WinkBed Mattress
Cooling features for hot sleepers
Great for combination sleepers
Supportive for all sizes of sleepers
Cons of the WinkBed Mattress
Not great at motion isolation
Memory foam purists may want more of a classic memory foam feel

The WinkBeds mattress earns our pick for the best mattress that won’t sag for people with back pain. It has a comfy, cool vibe in the top layers and a Euro-pillow top with gel-infused foams to cradle the shoulders. However, it retains a fair amount of firmness and support throughout due to a layer of microcoils and a 7.5” pocketed coil system. The WinkBed is offered in four firmness options (Soft, Luxury Firm, Firmer and Plus). All have just the right blend of pressure relief to alleviate tension around the back and pushback to ensure sagging, which could create more back issues down the line, doesn’t occur over time.

The WinkBed pockets coil support core is also zoned, including targeted support in the lumbar region that should help alleviate pain. It uses strong coils, ranging from 14.5 to 16 gauge, that are thick and should hold up over time. All sizes of the WinkBed, including the WinkBed Plus for plus-size sleepers, retail for less than $2,000.

What our testers say: “During my testing, I noticed great temperature regulation, strong edge support, and responsive materials. It’s a bonus that the mattress is available in four different firmness options, meaning a wide variety of sleepers can find something to suit their needs.” – Loren, Lead Mattress Tester

Who Might Like the WinkBed Mattress

  • Hot sleepers – Cooling features work well on this mattress.
  • Combination sleepers – Good lumbar support and a firmer top layer allow for more support when shifting around.
  • All sizes of sleepers – Multiple firmness options allow sleepers of all types to find a firmness that supports their body weight well.

Who Might Not Like the WinkBed Mattress

  • Lightweight sleepers – Those under 130 lbs. may not find the WinkBed to be soft enough to conform to their shoulders and hips.
  • Memory foam purists – Those who love the sinking in feeling of memory foam may not love this.

What Users Say:

On the WinkBed website, this mattress scored a 4.8 out of 5 stars, from 8, 414 reviews. Reviews stated that this mattress was both comfortable and supportive for them. There were some complaints of pain after sleeping from being too firm.

Pros of the Nolah Natural
Great for back sleepers
Great for lightweight stomach sleepers
Cooling features
Cons of the Nolah Natural
Side sleepers may need more pressure relief
Memory foam mattress fans may not love the feel

Latex is one of the most durable mattress materials around; that’s why it’s a no-brainer for a high-quality latex mattress like the Nolah Natural to make our list of the best mattresses that won’t sag. In general, latex resists forming body impressions better than foam or coils.

The Nolah Natural has two top layers of durable Talalay latex and a base of supportive coils. In addition to being durable, the Natural is easy to move around on, offers above-average pressure relief, and stays cool through the night. As an added bonus, the Nolah Natural mattress is covered by a lifetime warranty for the original owner.

What our testers say: “Since this bed is made from bouncy and supportive coils and Talalay latex, I felt myself getting plenty of support and solid pressure relief on my lower back. But, when I turned to my side, I felt less cushioned. Back and stomach sleepers are the ideal candidates for this one.” – Loren, Lead Mattress Tester

Pros of the Sedona Elite Mattress
Good spinal alignment for side sleepers
Cooling features
Good motion isolation for couples
Cons of the Sedona Elite Mattress
Stomach sleepers may prefer something more firm

The only thing worse than sharing your bed with a snorer is rolling toward your sleeping partner because your mattress dips in the middle. Sagging affects couples in ways that it doesn’t for solo sleepers, which is why it’s so important for couples and co-sleepers to find a mattress that won’t sag during its peak years of use.

We gave the Sedona Elite a near-perfect score for durability, thanks to a supportive coil system and premium comfort foams that resist body impressions. Plus, Brooklyn Bedding offers an industry-standard 10-year warranty on the Sedona Elite mattress, which covers defects like premature sagging—not that we think you’ll have a problem with that.

What our testers say: “I found the lofty foam layers provided excellent pressure relief to my joints. The foundation of springy, supportive coils balanced out the ‘hug’ of the soft foams. From my perspective, the ideal candidate for this mattress is someone who likes to be cradled by their bed without feeling stuck.” – Loren, Lead Mattress Tester

Who Might Like the Sedona Elite Mattress

  • Couples who are light sleepers–Even though the Sedona Elite has pretty good responsiveness, its foam top layer provides great motion isolation, so you won’t feel your partner moving as you try to sleep.
  • Those with sensitive joints–This mattress’ expert cushioning abilities can help with pain relief from sensitive joints as it delicately cradles them while providing pressure relief.

Who Might Not Like the Sedona Elite Mattress

  • Firm fans–This is a softer bed, so if you prefer something firm, look elsewhere, like our best firm mattresses.
  • Stomach sleepers–Similar to the above point, stomach sleepers who need a firm bed to support their hips probably won’t find that in the Sedona Elite.

What Users Say:

On Brooklyn’s website, the Sedona Elite ranks 4.8 out of 5 stars. Reviews are generally positive and complaints seem to be related to personal preference or comparisons with other Brooklyn Bedding mattresses.

What to Look for in a Mattress That Won’t Sag

Sagging is almost always the result of normal wear and tear on a mattress. All beds will begin to sag at some point, but how fast and intensely that happens depends on the bed’s style, manufacturer, construction, and quality. The cushioning materials in the top layers, like memory foam, latex foam, and polyfoam, soften with prolonged use, especially in areas where the most pressure is applied from the sleeper’s body. Springs and coils also lose tension over time, causing an uneven sleeping surface that can make the mattress feel uncomfortable.

Because we know eventual sagging is inevitable for any mattress, it’s important to select beds with low sagging potential, which can be roughly determined based on a few factors. Here’s what to keep in mind when looking for a mattress that won’t sag:

Mattress Type

Low-quality innerspring and memory foam mattresses tend to have the shortest lifespans. Hybrid mattresses are prone to sagging and body impressions as well, but high-end hybrid mattresses have high-quality foams and coils that tend to be the most durable. High-quality latex mattresses can also last many years without deep impressions.

Firmness

Firm mattresses with denser materials tend to compress less quickly. If choosing between two mattresses with similar materials that are both suitable in terms of comfort, we recommend choosing the option that is slightly firmer. Our lists of best firm mattresses and best soft mattresses have plenty more information on this subject.

Mattress Materials

As convenient as the bed-in-a-box movement has made online mattress shopping, many affordable beds sold online contain low-quality materials that simply will not last. When selecting a new mattress, do a cost-benefit analysis of buying a slightly more expensive, well-made bed for more money. It may result in costs saved over time as a result of not needing to buy a new mattress every 3-5 years. We also recommend purchasing from mattress brands who are transparent about the details of the materials used in each mattress.

Coil Type

In hybrid and innerspring mattresses, low-gauge (thicker) coils will last longer than high-gauge coils

Foam Types

When buying a foam or hybrid mattress with foam layers, look for foam densities that have a high PCF relative to the norm for that foam type. 1.7+ is considered high for polyfoam and 5+ is considered high for memory foam. We also recommend selecting natural latex over synthetic latex when prioritizing durability.

How to Prevent Mattress Sagging

All mattresses will last longer when properly cared for. While sagging can’t be fixed or completely avoided, there are a few things you can do to minimize it.

Rotate the Mattress

Most mattresses should be rotated every three to six months to ensure even surface wear. Doing so can significantly extend the lifespan of the mattress by preventing concentrated or premature sagging. If you have a flippable mattress, ensure you’re using both sides by flipping it regularly. Make sure you take a look at our article on flipping your mattress before you do it, though.

Even if your mattress is already showing signs of sagging, rotating it every 3-6 months can help promote even wear down the line. It allows heavier areas of our body (the torso and hips) to rest on areas of the mattress that aren’t yet sagging while giving areas that are forming impressions some relief from the constant downward pressure.

Use a Mattress Topper

If your current mattress has already shown signs of wear, consider adding a topper to increase comfort. A topper adds an additional layer of comfort on top of your existing mattress. They usually feature 2-5” of down alternative, down, foam, latex or wool. If your mattress has deep body impressions, a thicker topper will be best. A topper helps with sagging prevention by reducing the direct impact of your body weight on the foam layers of the mattress. Check out our Best Memory Foam Mattress Toppers for more options.

Buy a New Foundation

Much like a house, a solid foundation is essential to the durability and stability of your mattress. If your current mattress is sagging or you’ve noticed that your new mattress purchases sag quicker than expected, it’s a good idea to take a look at your frame, platform bed or foundation. Make sure that it doesn’t have weak wood, separation between slats, saggy or worn boxsprings, or broken slats. Mattress Sagging and Sleep Positions

Sagging areas in a mattress will be noticeable no matter what your primary sleep position is, but the extent to which it inhibits your ability to get a good night’s rest will vary. Here’s an overview of how sagging mattresses impact sleepers in each position as well as how each position affects a mattress’ longevity.

Side Sleeping

For many, there’s no cozier sleeping position than on the side. The ideal mattress for side sleepers combines pressure relief at the hips and shoulders with support so that the spine doesn’t curve sideways. In fact, if your mattress is too firm, minimal sagging in your mattress around the shoulder and hip joint may actually encourage healthy spinal alignment by allowing these areas to sink more deeply into the mattress.

If you’ve chosen a mattress that’s appropriate for side sleeping and your body type, however, a sagging mattress will encourage too much bend, which may cause pain at the neck, shoulders and low back. Read our mattress recommendations for side sleepers to learn more.

Back Sleeping

Considered the healthiest sleeping position, back sleeping feels best on a supportive mattress that gives lift at the hips to ensure they stay in alignment with the shoulders and lower back. Back sleepers also need pressure relief and conforming in the lumbar region. Back sleepers should pay the most attention to the transition and support layers of a mattress, ensuring they contain high-density foams or quality coils so that the overall vibe of the mattress is supportive.

On a sagging mattress, back sleepers may notice the tension or pain in the lower back as the hips fall beneath the shoulders. Neck and shoulder pain can occur if this area begins to sag as well. Unlike side sleepers, back sleepers do not do well with even minimal sagging, so selecting a mattress that’s ideal for this position and your body type is important. Check out our mattress recommendations for back sleepers to learn more.

Stomach Sleeping

Of all the sleeping positions, stomach sleeping is considered the least healthy because it can cause tension in the neck as the head is placed to one side throughout the night. For those who aren’t willing to learn how to switch sleep positions, there are mattresses available that help make this sleeping position gentler on the body. Stomach sleepers should select a bed that’s firm enough to prevent sagging in the stomach area and supportive enough to bolster the lumbar region while reducing tension at the neck and shoulders.

For this reason, stomach sleepers should avoid softer, less supportive mattresses that will sink and sag quickly. Firm, supportive mattresses with materials known for durability and longevity will prevent spinal misalignment. Head over to our mattress recommendations for stomach sleepers to learn more.
