Right between the two you have the graphite option ($255), which does a wonderful job of regulating temperature throughout the night.

A too-firm mattress can eliminate all prospects of a good night’s sleep, especially if it doesn’t suit your body type and sleeping position. Unfortunately, this is a symptom of most college dorm mattresses that are provided to students. Thankfully, though, this issue can be remedied with the addition of a nice, soft, Twin XL mattress topper. The Layla is our recommendation for this sort of situation, as it’s composed of two inches of plush, cloud-like memory foam that can soften up even the firmest of mattresses.

What our testers say: “The Layla memory foam mattress topper is an excellent option for sleepers who want to add some softness to their current bed. Using 2” of slow-response foam, the Layla Topper hugs the body’s curves, providing extra cushioning and pressure relief to sensitive areas. It’s also one of the coolest memory foam toppers that we’ve seen. It might not be the best choice for stomach sleepers or people who want to firm up their mattresses.” – Becca Fair, Lead Accessories Tester

What to Look For in a Mattress Topper

You know you want a mattress topper, and you know you want it to be Twin XL, but there are still quite a few decisions you need to make. Before making your purchase, think about your preferred sleeping position, how much you’re willing to spend, whether or not you tend to overheat in your sleep, and whether or not you experience achiness in the morning.

Sleeping Positions

Your sleeping position plays a large part in which firmness level you should look for in a mattress topper. Side sleepers need a soft product, so that their hips and shoulders can sink comfortably into the surface of the mattress topper. Back sleepers should look for something a bit firmer (between five and seven on the firmness scale), and a stomach sleeper will likely be comfortable with a firmness of seven or higher. Trying to figure out which sleeping position is best for you? Check out our page on sleeping positions

Price

If you want a quality mattress topper, you should expect to pay at least $75, but this will likely get you only the most basic of products. Some toppers cost upwards of $300, but are manufactured using very high-quality materials that can greatly improve comfort and support.

What you’ll want to do is think about the purpose your Twin XL will serve in your life. Is it a temporary measure before committing to a new mattress? In this case, maybe consider something on the cheaper end of the spectrum. If, however, you’ll be sleeping on this mattress topper for years to come, you may want to think about purchasing something a bit more expensive.

Temperature Regulation

If you’re one of the many people who overheats in their sleep, you’ll want to look for temperature regulating properties in all of your sleep products. Generally, if you’re looking for a cooling mattress topper you’ll want to look for something with latex, as it does a good job of dispersing heat as opposed to trapping it.

In the past, memory foam has been associated with overheating at night. But, in recent years mattress manufacturers have been utilizing technology to help counteract this effect. Look out for memory foam that includes cooling gel or copper infusion, as these things help keep things from getting too warm as you sleep. Our list of the best cooling mattress toppers has some great options.

If this is a problem that keeps you from getting a good night’s rest, also consider taking a look at out tips to not sleep hot.

Pain Relief

Hip pain, shoulder pain, and back pain can all make it quite difficult to get a good night’s sleep. You may not know it, but your mattress may be contributing to this pain by not supporting and comforting your pressure points and spine. If you have hip or shoulder pain, a softer mattress topper can help to mitigate some of your discomfort throughout the night, while people with back pain might be aided by something a bit firmer.

For some great options and information, check out our lists of the best mattress toppers for hip pain and best mattress toppers for back pain.
