Shopping for a new mattress can quickly become overwhelming – there are so many types and sizes and brands out there that it’s difficult to cut through the noise. In this comparison, we did the heavy lifting for you with a deep dive into two popular mattresses. Here’s how the all-foam Leesa mattress stacks up to the hybrid, eco-friendly Avocado mattress.

Leesa vs. Avocado Overview

Leesa is a popular online mattress brand, and its flagship all-foam mattress is designed to accommodate all sleep positions and most body types without breaking the bank. The Avocado mattress is a luxury hybrid pick made with organic materials and a deep commitment to sustainability – something that’s reflected in the price tag.

Who Should Choose the Leesa Mattress?

  • Back sleepers. Back sleepers ranging from lightweight to heavyweight should find the support they need to snooze peacefully all night long.
  • Combination sleepers. While foam doesn’t traditionally offer much bounce, the foam in the top layer of the Leesa is impressively responsive. If you tend to switch positions at night, you should be able to do so easily on this mattress.
  • Shoppers on a budget. While the Leesa mattress isn’t the least expensive option out there, it’s priced to accommodate a reasonable budget.

Who Should Choose the Avocado Mattress?

  • Hot sleepers. With organic cotton, wool, and latex, this mattress features temperature-regulating materials that should help you stay cool and comfortable all night.
  • Back sleepers of all sizes. The combination of latex and zoned support coils mean support in all the right spots, especially if you prefer to snooze on your back.
  • Eco-minded shoppers. If eco-minded manufacturing practices and sustainable, non-toxic materials are a priority for you, you’ll be more than happy with Avocado’s like-minded commitment.

Leesa vs. Avocado: Top Similarities

  • Back support. The materials used in both the Leesa and the Avocado make it particularly well suited for back sleepers of all sizes.
  • Motion isolation. Memory foam and latex offer impressive motion isolation, so these mattresses are great options if you share your bed with a partner, child, or pet and need to minimize disturbances.
  • Bed-in-a-box model. Both mattresses are compressed, boxed, and shipped to your door. You can’t beat the convenience factor!

Leesa vs. Avocado: Top Differences

  • Materials. While the Leesa is a classic all-foam construction, the Avocado is a hybrid model made with innersprings and latex.
  • Price point. The Leesa mattress is priced as a middle-of-the-road buy, but you’ll spend quite a bit more for the organic Avocado.
  • Firmness level. Both mattresses fall into the medium firmness category, but the Leesa veers a touch softer, while the Avocado is a firmer choice.

Leesa vs. Avocado: Firmness & Feel Differences

While both mattresses have a medium firmness, the Avocado is a firmer pick.

What’s the Firmness Of the Leesa vs. Avocado Mattresses?

The Mattress Nerd firmness scale is 1 to 10, with 10 akin to sleeping on floorboards. The Leesa comes in at a 5.5, so it’s a true medium mattress. The Avocado has a ranking of 7 on the firmness scale, making it a medium-firm choice. However, it’s important to remember that firmness is subjective and will feel firmer or softer depending on body weight.

What Do the Leesa vs. Avocado Mattresses Feel Like?

The Lessa mattress is nicely balanced, with the gentle hugging sensation of memory foam but more bounce than the material traditionally offers. While it’s soft to the touch, you don’t get the sensation that you’re being swallowed whole.

The Avocado mattress is responsive, with gentle pressure relief that you can feel right away. It’s also cool to the touch, with a good amount of bounce.

What’s It Like to Sleep On the Leesa vs. Avocado Mattresses?

Back sleepers will find the Leesa supportive, and side sleepers should enjoy the contouring memory foam that cradles hips and shoulders. Stomach sleepers should be adequately supported as well. And since the Leesa is quite responsive, combination sleepers should also fare well.

The Avocado is another good pick for back and stomach sleepers. Side sleepers, however, may find they experience too much pressure on the shoulders and hips. Combination sleepers will enjoy the bounce and motion isolation properties.

The Leesa vs. Avocado Mattresses By Body Type

Leesa Performance By Body Type & Sleeping Position:

Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): 212

Avocado Performance By Body Type & Sleeping Position:

Body Type:BACK SLEEPERSSTOMACH SLEEPERSSIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): 452
Average-weight (130–230 lbs):543
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): 442

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Average-Weight Sleepers (130–230 lbs)

The Lull has the necessary support for proper spinal alignment if you’re an average-weight back sleeper. Stomach sleepers in the same weight range will find adequate support and contouring as well. And side and combination sleepers should also enjoy the balance and bounce in the Leesa. However, some heavier side sleepers could experience pressure issues in the shoulders.

Average-weight back and stomach sleepers will find that the coil system in the Avocado mattress offers sufficient conforming support. Side sleepers of average weight could go either way – with the upgraded pillow top option, they may get the deeper pressure relief they need. Combination sleepers in this weight range should find the bed’s bouncy surface accommodating.

Heavyweight Sleepers (> 230 lbs)

If you’re a heavyweight back or stomach sleeper, you may want to opt for a firmer mattress than the Leesa to ensure you have the support you need for a good night’s sleep. Side and combination sleepers in this weight range should likewise look for a hybrid model that offers deeper pressure relief.

Avocado’s latex layers deliver superior pressure relief for heavyweight sleepers, so back and stomach sleepers will rest easy. But side sleepers in this weight range will need to upgrade to the pillow top, and combination sleepers who often find themselves on their sides should do as well.

Lightweight Sleepers (< 130 lbs)

Lightweight back and stomach sleepers will find enough support on the Leesa for proper spinal alignment. The same is true for lightweight side sleepers, thanks to the contouring memory foam. Combination sleepers in this weight range will find it responds nicely.

The Avocado mattress is a good pick for lightweight back and stomach sleepers, who should find it softly supportive. But without the pillow top upgrade, it’s likely too firm for side sleepers in this weight range. Combination sleepers who don’t spend too much time on their sides will enjoy the gentle bounce and quick response.

Differences In Mattress Construction

The Leesa is a 10” all-foam mattress combining memory and support foam layers. The hybrid Avocado measures 11” or 13” with the optional pillow-top upgrade.

Cover

The Leesa is covered with a soft, seamless twill fabric cover. The Avocado mattress has an organic, GOTS-certified cotton cover.

Comfort Layers

In the Leesa, breathable foam makes up the comfort layer, which tops another two inches of contouring memory foam – what Leesa calls its recovery layer. The Avocado mattress uses two inches of organic Dunlop latex, a breathable, supportive material that’s gently contouring.

Support Layers

The Leesa mattress has a six-inch base of durable high-density foam, which is its core support. In the Avocado mattress, there are eight inches of responsive innerspring coils stacked over a one-inch latex base.

Leesa vs. Avocado Mattress Performance Ratings & Differences

Temperature

While you can’t call the Leesa a cooling mattress, it does use breathable foam to minimize heat retention. But if you sleep hot, the Avocado mattress is a better choice. Between the naturally temperature-regulating wool and latex, plus the airflow encouraged by the innerspring coils, this mattress is designed for cool, comfortable sleep.

Motion Transfer

Foam is a good material for isolating motion, so the Leesa works well for couples. The same is true of the Avocado, though it may not be quite as isolating as the Leesa.

Edge Support

The Leesa has adequate edge support. The foam on the edge of the mattress will definitely sink low if you sit there, but not so deeply that you’ll slip off. Still, you may feel a little unstable. The Avocado mattress, on the other hand, has excellent edge support. That means you can sleep comfortably all the way on the side of the bed.

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief is a standout benefit in the Leesa, but mostly for lightweight to average-weight sleepers. The latex in the Avocado mattress offers pressure relief as well, with gentle contouring right where you need it. But you may need to upgrade to the pillow top if this feature is particularly important.

Pain Relief

Pain is often related to body type and preferred sleeping position. The Leesa mattress may offer adequate pain relief in the back and hips for lightweight to average-weight sleepers. For shoulder pain and those with higher body weights, there are likely better options. The Avocado mattress is a good pick for pain relief in general, thanks to its combination of latex and zoned support coils.

Durability

The Leesa is a pretty typical bed in a box. Its all-foam construction should last roughly seven years. For a more durable, long-lasting mattress, go with the Avocado. The hybrid design and high-quality materials will perform for longer.

Our Final Take

The Leesa mattress is a reliable, affordable, all-foam mattress well-suited to back and side sleepers. If you’re in search of an eco-friendly, non-toxic mattress to cool down hot, sweaty sleep, the Avocado is a better choice.

Leesa vs. Avocado FAQs

What mattress is comparable to the Leesa mattress?

The Leesa mattress is comparable to the Casper Original. Both are medium-firm, all-foam mattresses with identical sleep trial and warranty windows. The convoluted foam in the Leesa mattress makes it a touch cooler than the perforated foam in the Casper. The Leesa is also a few hundred dollars cheaper.

Who is Avocado mattress owned by?

The Avocado mattress is owned by Avocado Green Brands. The company designs and builds its products in Los Angeles, California, but hails from Hoboken, New Jersey, where it was co-founded in 2015. In 2018, Avocado Mattress merged with Brentwood Home, and Avocado Green Brands became the top-level corporate entity.

Is the Avocado mattress firm or soft?

The Avocado mattress is a medium-firm mattress that comes in at a 7 on the 1 to 10 firmness scale. For a softer feel, shoppers can upgrade to the pillow top. That adds two inches of GOLS-certified organic latex for a gentle-firm feel – a 6 out of 10.
