Nolah vs. Casper Overview

Made with breathable layers of foam, the Nolah is a good fit for side sleepers or anyone with back pain because of its excellent pressure relief. Meanwhile, the Casper performs especially well for combination sleepers and most folks who are lightweight or average-weight.

Who Should Choose the Nolah Mattress?

  • Side sleepers. The Nolah Original’s memory foam layers that are designed for pressure relief makes it a great fit for side sleepers.
  • Hot sleepers. Even though the Nolah is an all-foam mattress, it’s breathable thanks to the TENCEL cover and AirFoam layers.
  • Sleepers with back pain. The foam mattress top and other layers of the Nolah may be helpful for easing back pain.

Who Should Choose the Casper Mattress?

  • Side sleepers. The Casper is great for lightweight and average-weight side sleepers.
  • Sleepers who toss and turn. Since the Casper does a great job absorbing movement, it’s ideal if you (or your partner) move around a lot while asleep.
  • Stomach sleepers. Most stomach sleepers will be comfortable on the Casper and enjoy the support for their hips.

Nolah vs. Casper: Top Similarities

  • Great for side sleepers. Both of these mattresses are ideal for lightweight and average-weight side sleepers.
  • Firmness. These two mattresses both score a 6 on our 1-10 firmness scale. They’re each considered medium-firm.
  • Motion transfer. Both the Nolah and the Casper absorb motion very well.

Nolah vs. Casper: Top Differences

  • Temperature control. The Nolah is cool and breathable enough for average sleepers, but the Casper doesn’t do so well in this category.
  • Warranty. The Nolah offers a lifetime warrant while the Casper comes with a 10-year warranty.
  • Edge support. The Nolah’s edge support is minimal compared to the Casper’s near-perfect score.

Nolah vs. Casper: Firmness & Feel Differences

While the Nolah and the Casper have the exact same score on our firmness scale (6/10), there are still differences in the way these mattresses feel.

What’s the Firmness Of the Nolah & Casper Mattresses?

The Nolah Original is a medium-firm mattress that gets a 6/10 on our 1-10 firmness scale. Side sleepers and sleepers of an average weight will appreciate the pressure relief. Stomach sleepers and heavyweight sleepers, however, generally find that the Nolah doesn’t offer enough support.

The Casper Original is also a 6/10. Like the Nolah, it offers a good balance of pressure relief and support that should work well for every sleeping position.

What Do the Nolah & Casper Mattresses Feel Like?

The Nolah is an all-foam mattress. It has a cushiony feeling and conforms closely to your body. But don’t worry — unless you’re a heavyweight sleeper, it still offers ample support, too.

The Casper is also highly comfortable thanks to the layers of plush polyfoam. The light contouring is sufficient for back, stomach, and side sleepers.

What’s It Like to Sleep On the Nolah & Casper Mattresses?

The pressure relief and support from the Nolah works well for side sleepers. This mattress is also generally a good fit for back sleepers and combination sleepers, thanks to its responsiveness. If you’re a stomach sleeper, though, you may want something with extra firmness.

If you fall into the lightweight or average weight categories, the Casper Original will likely be a good fit for you no matter which position you sleep in. People who weigh over 230 pounds might need a mattress that provides more support at the hips and shoulders.

The Nolah vs. Casper Mattresses By Body Type

Nolah Performance By Sleeping Position:
Body Type:BACK SLEEPERSSTOMACH SLEEPERSSIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  5 4 5
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 4
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  3 4
Casper Performance By Sleeping Position:
Body Type:BACK SLEEPERSSTOMACH SLEEPERSSIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  5 4 4
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 5
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  3 2 2

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Average-Weight Sleepers (130–230 lbs)

Back and side sleepers of an average weight will be comfortable on the foam layers in the Nolah. We also recommend this mattress for average-weight combination sleepers because of how responsive it is. Stomach sleepers, however, will likely need a firmer bed.

Average-weight back sleepers and side sleepers will enjoy the dual support and cushioning from the Casper Original. Stomach sleepers will also appreciate how their hips are supported, while combination sleepers should have plenty of good support, too.

Heavyweight Sleepers (> 230 lbs)

Unfortunately, the Nolah lacks in this category: Heavyweight back and side sleepers may not have enough support. Stomach sleepers might not have enough firmness. And since the Nolah’s responsiveness is not top-tier, heavyweight combination sleepers may not want this mattress, either.

On the Casper, heavyweight side sleepers may feel too much pressure at their hips because of the firm core foam. Heavyweight back and stomach sleepers might sink into the mattress too far. And we don’t recommend this mattress for heavyweight combination sleepers, either, since the lack of coils might make it difficult for you to get comfortable.

Lightweight Sleepers (< 130 lbs)

Thanks to the Nolah’s 6/10 firmness and soft cushioning, lightweight back sleepers, side sleepers, and stomach sleepers will likely all find the Nolah a good fit. Combination sleepers will enjoy the mattress’s responsiveness, too.

Lightweight back and side sleepers should be comfortable sleeping on the Casper because of the foam support. Stomach sleepers’ hips will not sink in too far, and the support is enough for combination sleepers, too.

Differences In Mattress Construction

Both the Nolah and Casper are all-foam mattresses. The Nolah is 10” tall and the Casper tops out at 11”.

Nolah vs. Casper Mattress Performance Ratings & Differences

Temperature

In this category, the Nolah gets a 3 out of 5 and the Casper gets a 3.5. Both beds are made of memory foam, which can sleep hot. However, the breathable materials used in the mattress construction should keep the average sleeper cool.

Motion Transfer

In this category, the Nolah gets a 4.5 and the Casper gets a 5. We recommend both of these beds as a good fit for couples who sleep together. The foam layers in the Nolah and Casper do a good job of absorbing movement.

Edge Support

In this category, the Nolah gets a 2 and the Casper gets a 4. While the Nolah’s edge support is decent, the Casper performed almost perfectly in tests designed to evaluate edge support.

Pressure Relief

In this category, the Nolah gets a 3.5 and the Casper gets a 4.5. The Nolah’s pressure relief shines brightest for back sleepers. And for some people, the Casper, which supports healthy spine alignment, may even relieve pain over time.

Pain Relief

Both of these mattresses provide decent pain relief. The Casper Original is one of the top mattresses on the market for lightweight and average-weight people with back pain. However, the Nolah isn’t quite firm enough to help with back pain.

Durability

In this category, the Nolah gets a 3 and the Casper gets a 4. Both of these mattresses are all-foam and will not last quite as long as mattresses with coils. These beds also may not be as durable for heavyweight sleepers.

Our Final Take

Lightweight and average-weight sleepers or anyone who moves around a lot while sleeping should be very comfortable on the Casper. But if you sleep hot or need extra pain relief, the Nolah will likely be the better choice between the two.

Nolah & Casper FAQs

Do Casper mattresses sag over time?

Yes — the Casper original may experience some sagging over time. This is one reason we recommend this bed for lightweight and average-weight sleepers. If you are a heavyweight sleeper (over 230 lbs), the Casper simply might not be your best choice.

Can Casper mattresses be flipped over?

No. According to the manufacturer, Casper mattresses are not designed to be flipped. In fact, it’s important to make sure the correct side is facing up because the materials are strategically layered. To help prevent sagging, if you sleep alone on one side of the bed or if you and your partner weigh significantly different amounts, rotate the bed 180 degrees every few months.
