Casper Nova Hybrid Snow Mattress Video Review

If you prefer watching over reading, join me as I tell you the best and worst qualities of the Casper Nova Snow mattress.

Casper Nova Hybrid Snow Mattress Firmness and Feel

Casper Nova Hybrid Snow Mattress Firmness

At Mattress Nerd we use a 1–10 firmness scale, where 10 is the firmest. We found the Nova Snow mattress to be a 5.5/10 on this scale, which is medium-soft. This firmness level works best for the average back and side sleeper, but lightweight stomach sleepers should still get good alignment on this bed.

What Does the Casper Nova Hybrid Snow Feel Like?

The surface of the Nova Snow feels cushy and soft, as you would expect from a softer mattress, but those coils still allow you to feel supported. The Nova Snow is a hybrid mattress, so you should experience a bouncy feel on the surface, which makes it easy to move from sleeping position to sleeping position, but more on that later.

Support and Pressure Relief by Sleeping Position

Back Sleepers

Finding the best mattress for back sleepers is a pretty easy feat because they can fit well on almost any mattress. They need a bed that keeps the spine in its natural alignment. The Nova Snow works very well for lightweight and average-weight back sleepers. Heavyweight back sleepers may find the feel too soft, but it should still keep you supported.

Stomach Sleepers

This is where the bad news comes in. Average-weight and heavyweight stomach sleepers will find this mattress to be too soft to keep the hips elevated and spine aligned. These sleepers should check out the best mattresses for stomach sleepers. However, lightweight stomach sleepers should stay supported on the Casper.

Side Sleepers

We would say that the Casper Nova Snow is one of the best mattresses for side sleepers. Lightweight, average-weight, and heavyweight sleepers alike will find little to no pressure on their hips and shoulders. Plus, the Zoned Support layer keeps that spine aligned. See? That plush foam pays off.

Combination Sleepers

Combination sleepers need two main things out of a bed: responsiveness and compatibility with your sleeping positions. The Casper Snow has great responsiveness and will work well for average-weight, and heavyweight side/back combination sleepers as well as lightweight sleepers, no matter what position you find yourself in. For similar options, see the best mattresses for combination sleepers.

NERD RATING: Will this bed work for you?

Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  5 4 5
Average weight (130–230 lbs): 5 2 5
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  4 2 5

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Casper Nova Hybrid Snow Mattress Performance

Is the Casper Nova Hybrid Snow Mattress Cooling?

I would describe the Casper Nova Snow as the Goldilocks example of a temperature-neutral bed: not too hot and not too cold. Foam layers usually hold on to heat, but each foam layer is made with breathable foam that allows for a lot of airflow straight to the coil layer. That alone would keep you sleeping warm rather than hot.

But we can’t forget the cooling extras, like the cover that contains Phase Change Material to draw excess heat from your body and the brand’s HeatDelete™ Bands, which are supposed to direct heat away from you. For mattresses with similar materials, check out the best cooling mattresses.

Edge Support

Edge support refers to the amount of support the perimeter of your mattress provides. If you sleep with a partner, have mobility issues, or just like to sleep there, this will be an important factor for you.

We gave the Casper Nova Snow a 3.75/5 for edge support, because we found it to be above average, but not super solid.

Responsiveness

Responsiveness, or ease of movement, refers to how the bed allows you to move along the surface. Because the Nova Snow has softer foams, we’d expect it to be a little harder to move on. However, the coil layer keeps you elevated and leads to ease of movement, so we gave it a 5/5.

Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?

Motion isolation is what you want if you sleep with a bed partner or pet: it keeps motion on one side of the bed. Coils usually transfer a good amount of motion across the mattress, but those soft foam on top help stifle that motion, allowing you to sleep relatively undisturbed.

Noise

Though this bed features a coil layer, it is buried under a few layers of foam. So, this mattress is practically silent.

Pain Relief

There are quite a few aches and pains your mattress can help you relive, like back pain, hip pain, and shoulder pain. Back pain is usually caused by misalignment, and the best mattresses for back pain keep you aligned.

Side sleepers experience shoulder and hip pain when their mattress doesn’t relieve pressure well. When we rolled out our super scientific pressure map, we saw little yellow in the hips and shoulders (meaning slight pressure was detected) but overall, it looked good.

Sex

The best mattresses for sex keep you cool, stay quiet, have a long lifespan, and easily responds to your movements. Casper Snow checks all of these boxes, which is great news for you and your lover.

Off-Gassing

Off-gassing is the chemical-ly smell you may experience after you unbox a mattress. This tends to happen to boxed beds that include foam because the compounds inside are released, causing the non-toxic smell. We found this mattress to have average off-gassing, and it dissipated after a few hours.

Durability

Of course, you want a mattress that will last you for years to come. The Casper Snow has three layers of foam followed by a pocketed coil layer. Coils are one of the most supportive mattress materials, and these are individually wrapped, so they shouldn’t break down as quickly.

We gave this mattress a 4/5 for durability because the edge support (a good marker for durability) isn’t as great as we need it to be for a 5/5.

Nova Snow Mattress Construction: What’s it made of?

Now, we’re gonna get into the construction of the Casper Nova Snow mattress; construction is the foundation of good mattress performance. And because we’re Nerds, we dissected this mattress to get a good look at the layers and how they inform performance.

Cooling Cover: This mattress cover is made with Phase Change Material that makes the surface of the mattress cool-to-the-touch.

Cooling Gel Foam: The first comfort layer features AirScape™ foam with perforations that is infused with cooling gel to allow airflow throughout the mattress.

AirScape™ Foam: The next layer features six of what the brand calls “HeatDelete™ Bands” that move heat away from your body. This foam also has air channels for even more airflow.

Zoned Support Layer: The Casper Zoned Support layer has seven zones, which are softer at your head and feet but firmer in the center for proper spinal alignment.

Coil Layer: The base layer is made up of pocketed coils that add durability, breathability, and bounce to your mattress.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

The Casper Snow mattresses ship free to the contiguous U.S. and ship with an additional fee if you live in Alaska or Hawaii. It should arrive in about three to nine business days via UPS. If you’d like to opt in for white glove delivery and mattress setup, it costs $149 extra.

We unboxed the Queen-size of this mattress, and it was 89 lbs, so you definitely want to tap in a partner to help you unbox. It took us about two minutes to completely remove the mattress from the box and take it out of the plastic. It took about half an hour to puff up and the off-gassing wasn’t too bad.

Warranty

Casper offers a 10-year warranty for all of their mattresses. The Casper mattress warranty covers

  • The original purchaser.
  • Sagging or deterioration one inch or greater.
  • Any physical flaws.
  • Zipper defects.

To file a claim, contact Casper’s customer service with your proof of purchase, detailing what your defect is. All warranty returns are free of charge.

Trial Period & Returns

Bed-in-a-box mattresses usually come with a trial period, so you can get an idea of whether or not you would like to keep your mattress. Casper offers the industry-standard 100-night sleep trial period.

This 100-night window is when the Casper return policy is active. Your trial begins the day your mattress is delivered. You have to wait 30 nights before initiating a return to allow your body to break in the mattress. Should you decide you’d like to return your Nova Snow mattress, contact Casper and they will send someone to pick up your bed for donation to a charity. After pickup, you will receive a full refund.

Addressing Casper Nova Hybrid Mattress Complaints

  • Temperature Issues: A few reviewers reported this mattress doesn’t actively sleep cool, just temperature neutral, and we would agree. The heat delete bands and other cooling features do a great job pulling excess heat from your body, so you don’t overheat at night, but it won’t stay actively cool all night.
  • Adjustment Period: We also came across a few complaints that the Casper Nova Snow that it takes a few days to break in and get comfortable. This is the case for most new mattresses. Your body needs up to 30 nights to “break in” the mattress; especially if you used to sleep on an all-foam bed, you have to adjust to a hybrid.

Casper Nova Hybrid Snow Mattress FAQs

What is the Casper Snow Technology?

The Casper Snow technology is what makes the Nova Snow Hybrid stand out. It consists of a cooling cover that includes Phase Change Material and something the brand calls HeatDelete™ Bands, both of which draw excess heat away from your body for a cooler sleep.

Do Casper mattresses get hot?

Yes and no. The Casper hybrid mattresses (Casper Hybrid, Casper Wave Hybrid, and Casper Nova Hybrid) have lots of airflow thanks to the coil layers. Plus, the Snow versions of the Nova and Wave Hybrids have additional cooling features to keep it from getting hot.

However, the Casper Element and Casper Original are all-foam beds that hold on to more heat than the hybrid options.

Can you flip a Casper mattress?

No, you cannot flip Casper mattresses. Casper offers six different mattress models and they are all one sided, including the Nova Snow Hybrid. These beds are intentionally constructed to have the comfort layers (the plush foams) on top and the support layer (the coils) at the bottom.

The Nerd’s Take: What’s the Bottom Line?

The Casper Nova Hybrid Snow is best for side sleepers, back sleepers, hot sleepers, and combination sleepers. The special cooling additions in the snow technology does a great job of keeping your temperature neutral at night. Budget shoppers and most stomach sleepers may want to check out another option.
