The Nolah Original and the Loom & Leaf (by Saatva) are two of the most popular memory foam mattresses on the market. We put each mattress to the test by following our thorough testing methodology. If you’re shopping for your next bed, here’s what you need to know about each of these mattresses.
Both the Nolah and the Loom & Leaf should keep you decently cool while providing good pressure relief.
Nolah is best for… | Loom & Leaf is best for… |
Side sleepers | Back sleepers of all body types |
Hot sleepers | People looking for a Tempur-Pedic alternative |
Sleepers with back pain | People who like all-foam |
We measure firmness on a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being super soft and 10 being rock hard. The Nolah is 6/10, meaning it’s medium-firm. The Loom & Leaf comes in Relaxed Firm (6/10) or Firm (8/10).
The Nolah Original is a 6/10 on our firmness scale. Side sleepers will do well on this kind of mattress, which will provide the pressure relief they need. However, stomach sleepers may prefer something that’s firmer.
The Loom & Leaf comes in Relaxed Firm and Firm. The Relaxed Firm version, which is medium-firm, is good for back and side sleepers. The Firm option is best for stomach sleepers, back sleepers, or anyone who experiences back pain.
The Nolah is an all-foam, medium-firm mattress. It has good pressure relief and is decently responsive so you won’t feel “stuck.”
While the Loom & Leaf comes in two firmness options, both feel similar, with two top layers of memory foam that hug your body for that typical memory foam feel. The Firm feel comes with better responsiveness and motion isolation.
The Nolah Original strikes a great balance between cushion and support. It’s most comfortable for back and side sleepers.
The Loom & Leaf mattress hugs your body just like you’d expect from a memory foam mattress. Your lower back will feel well-supported in every position thanks to the extra lumbar support, and the Firm version is easy to move around on.
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 5 | 4 | 5 |
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): | 4 | 3 | 5 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 3 | 2 | 4 |
Body Type: | BACK SLEEPERS | STOMACH SLEEPERS | SIDE SLEEPERS |
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): | 5 | 5 | 3 |
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): | 5 | 5 | 4 |
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): | 4 | 3 | 4 |
1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent
Average-weight back sleepers, side sleepers, and combination sleepers should all sleep well on the Nolah Original. However, stomach sleepers will probably prefer a firmer mattress.
With the Loom & Leaf, average-weight back sleepers can likely use either firmness option. Average-weight stomach sleepers, side sleepers, and combination sleepers will all be comfortable on this mattress, too, with stomach sleepers especially enjoying the mattress’s spinal alignment.
The Nolah doesn’t offer quite enough support for heavyweight back and side sleepers. It’s also not ideal for heavyweight stomach sleepers, who generally find a medium-firm mattress too soft. And the Nolah strikes out with heavyweight combination sleepers, too — they will likely find it difficult to move around.
Heavyweight back sleepers will prefer the Firm option of the Loom & Leaf. For side sleepers, the Relaxed Firm is the best fit. Heavyweight stomach sleepers will likely need the extra support offered by the Firm, while this mattress may not be a good fit for combination sleepers — you could feel bogged down in all the foam.
Lightweight side and stomach sleepers will be very comfortable on the Nolah Original. This mattress has enough support for lightweight back sleepers, too, and its responsiveness makes it a great fit for lightweight combination sleepers.
Lightweight back sleepers should be decently comfortable on either of the Loom & Leaf firmness options. This mattress is also a good fit for lightweight stomach sleepers. However, the firmness level is not ideal for side sleepers. This mattress may not be a good fit for combination sleepers — you could feel bogged down in all the foam.
The Nolah Original is 10” tall and the Loom & Leaf is 12” tall.

The Nolah’s support layer is 7” of high-density polyfoam. The Loom & Leaf also has a support layer of high-density foam to support the other mattress materials.

In this category, the Nolah gets a 3 and the Loom & Leaf gets a 3. The TENCEL and AirForm materials help circulate air around your body. The Loom & Leaf also includes several materials with cooling elements. However, both of these mattresses are all-foam, so if you sleep very hot you may prefer a hybrid mattress.
In this category, the Nolah gets a 4.5 and the Loom & Leaf gets a 5. The AirFoam and other foam layers in the Nolah provide great motion isolation. The Loom & Leaf also scores well in this category because of the dense memory foam.
In this category, the Nolah gets a 2 and the Loom & Leaf gets a 4. Neither mattress is anything special in this category — the edge support is decent but nothing more.
In this category, the Nolah gets a 3.5 and the Loom & Leaf gets a 4. Our pressure map indicated that the Nolah is helpful for back sleepers, and also for side sleepers’ hips. When it comes to the Loom & Leaf, it’s easy to maintain spinal alignment.
While the Nolah offers decent relief for back pain, many chiropractors recommend a firmer mattress to help alleviate pain in this area. And the Loom & Leaf’s pain relief is best for people who weigh less than 230 lbs.
In this category, the Nolah gets a 3 and the Loom & Leaf gets a 4.5. Both mattresses are all-foam and should last around 8-10 years if properly cared for.
Nolah mattresses come with free shipping in the 48 contiguous U.S. states. They’ll arrive within 5 to 10 days. The Nolah Original has a lifetime warranty and a 120-night sleep trial period.
The Loom & Leaf also comes with free shipping. It has a lifetime warranty and a 365-night sleep trial period.

For side sleepers or sleepers with back pain, the pressure relief and pain relief of the Nolah will keep you comfortable night after night — and the budget-friendly price doesn’t hurt, either. But if you’re a back sleeper or stomach sleeper who’s looking for an all-foam mattress, the Loom & Leaf will be good for you.
No. The Loom & Leaf mattress is not flippable — it’s just a one-sided mattress. However, it does come in two firmness levels: Relaxed Firm (6/10) and Firm (8/10). You can purchase whichever option you prefer. If you would like a double-sided memory foam mattress, look into the Layla.
The Loom & Leaf is a decent fit for most people who weigh over 230 lbs. For heavyweight back and stomach sleepers, we recommend the Firm option (although it may not be the best fit for heavier stomach sleepers due to the lack of supportive coils). For side sleepers, opt for the Relaxed Firm choice instead.
