The Mattress Nerd’s Take:  The Amerisleep AS2 is a medium-firm mattress that is equipped with technology to relieve pressure and back pain, keep your body cool and ensure back and stomach sleepers get a great night’s sleep. If you don’t mind the high price point and want to try a different approach to foam bedding, the all-foam Amerisleep AS2 could be right for you. If you sleep hot and need the breathability of a coil construction, the AS2 hybrid is the better choice. For other mattresses with a wide range of benefits, see our best mattresses for back pain.

Who is the Amerisleep AS2 Mattress Best For?

Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): 4 5 2

Back Sleepers:  As a 7/10 on the firmness scale, the Amerisleep AS2 will deliver the necessary support for back sleepers’ shoulders, back and hips while maintaining a soft contour for the body. Back sleepers need firmer mattresses to support their shoulders, back, hips and legs. While lightweight and average-weight back sleepers should feel well-supported on the all-foam AS2, we recommend the hybrid version for heavyweight back sleepers. For other top choices, check out our list on the best mattress for back sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers:  The best mattresses for stomach sleepers are firmer mattresses that offer enough support to prevent the hips from sinking in and throwing off spinal alignment. The AS2 is at the perfect level of firmness to comfortably accommodate stomach sleepers, but we suggest that heavyweight sleepers choose the hybrid version for the added support of individually-wrapped coils. The HIVE foam layer of the all-foam AS2 should be enough to provide lightweight and average-weight stomach sleepers with adequate zoned support.

Side Sleepers: Side sleepers will probably find that the medium-firm feel of the Amerisleep AS2 is not soft enough to cradle the shoulders and hips appropriately. While it features a soft comfort layer of Bio-Pur foam on top, it may not be thick enough to provide the cushioning needed to prevent soreness in lightweight, average-weight and heavyweight sleepers alike.

Combination Sleepers: Since combination sleepers shift positions throughout the night, the all-foam AS2 is well-suited for lightweight and average-weight combination sleepers who spend more time on their back and stomach rather than their side. Couples that share a bed will also like that the all-foam AS2 prevents motion transfer, which will keep them from disturbing each other’s sleep as they shift and turn. Heavyweight sleepers and those looking for a mattress with optimal temperature control should choose the supportive and breathable AS2 hybrid. How Does the Amerisleep AS2 Feel?

Responsiveness, Bounce and Ease of Movement

Because the AS2 hybrid is built with both responsive coils and proprietary Bio-Pur foam, it offers great responsiveness and bounce. It should feel firm and supportive, rather than an ultra-soft bed reminiscent of quicksand. People who like to sleep “on” a bed instead of “in” should love the AS2 hybrid. The all-foam AS2 is still responsive and is the same firmness level, but it lacks those bouncy and responsive coils. If you are looking to easily move around your mattress, see the best hybrid mattresses.

How Firm is this Mattress?

Here at Mattress Nerd, we measure mattress models on a scale of 1–10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the most firm. The Amerisleep AS2 has a medium-firm feel that is approximately 7/10 on the firmness scale, making it the best mattress option for back and stomach sleepers. It’s much too firm for side sleepers, especially those with sensitive joints that respond poorly to pressure.

Does it Sleep Hot?

To stay cool during the night, the AS2 relies on Bio-Pur open-cell foam that is more breathable than traditional memory foam material. For an all-foam mattress, the AS2 offers great cooling capabilities. But if sleeping cool is your number one concern, the AS2 hybrid is the way to go: The 8” layer of breathable coils offer much more airflow than any foam on the market could achieve. See our other picks for the best mattress for hot sleepers.

Is the AS2 Good For Couples?

Memory foam mattresses like the all-foam version of the AS2 provide quality motion isolation so couples don’t disturb one another as each partner moves around the mattress. The AS2 hybrid’s metal coils aren’t as great as foam at motion isolation, but we still expect that the foam layers in the hybrid AS2 will stifle most motion and leave couples largely undisturbed. If motion isolation is a top concern for you, check out the best mattresses for couples..

How’s the Edge Support?

Once again, the coils in the AS2 hybrid make a difference in the feel of the bed. Because of the extra stability offered by that 8” layer of individually-wrapped coils, the edge support on the AS2 hybrid is top-notch. Essentially, that means you can sit and lay along the edge of the bed while still feeling supported and stable. Because the AS2 is so firm, even the all-foam version will offer great edge support.

Construction: What’s Under the Surface?

AS2 All-Foam Construction

The Amerisleep AS2’s Bio-Core base layer delivers unparalleled support that can last for decades without sagging or developing soft spots. The layer above the Bio-Core is a HIVE transition layer that gives targeted support and pressure relief for optimum spinal alignment as well as head, back, shoulder, and hip support. Above the transition layer is the open-cell Bio-Pur design, which keeps you cool and refreshed while also contouring to your body and offering pressure relief. Finally, the top layer of the mattress is an ultra-breathable comfort cover that prevents you from overheating as you sleep.

Layer #1: 2” Bio-Pur Foam

The top comfort layer of the AS2 is a layer of Amerisleep’s proprietary Bio-Pur foam that improves upon traditional memory foam by offering more breathability and responsiveness. Combination sleepers should find it easier to change positions during the night on this foam layer, and it should keep the bed cooler than old-school memory foam.

Layer #2: 3” HIVE Layer

The HIVE layer offers more support for heavier parts of the body––the head, back and legs––while offering more comfort for the shoulders and hips. We don’t expect this layer to be as great at pressure relief as the zoned coils in the AS2 hybrid, but it’s certainly optimal for spinal support.

Layer #3: 7” Bio Core Foam

This thick layer of support foam enhances the durability of the bed and keeps the mattress from sagging over time.

AS2 Hybrid Construction

The AS2 uses dense foam layers and an 8” layer of individually-wrapped metal coils to create a supportive all-foam bed that’s great for back sleepers and stomach sleepers. The density of the bed means it’s not ideal for side sleepers, but anyone looking for a supportive all-foam bed should consider the AS2 hybrid. An added bonus? The coils and cooling cover offer exceptional airflow to keep even ultra-hot sleepers comfortable and cool.

Layer #1: 2” Bio-Pur Foam

The Bio-Pur layer is similar to a memory foam top layer in some mattresses, but it’s a bit more technologically advanced and was developed specifically by Amerisleep. Bio-Pur foam is more breathable than traditional memory foam and, according to the company, encourages better circulation. Though we’re not sure if you’ll really be able to tell a difference in the circulation aspect, Bio-Pur foam is certainly more responsive than traditional foam.

Layer #2: 1” Affinity Layer

The 1” Affinity layer of the AS2 is a firm layer of foam that adds extra stability to the mattress. Just like the 8” coil layer, it supports the back with more strength and stability while cradling the head, shoulders and hips.

Layer #3: 8” Zoned Coils

The 8” layer of coils is truly the star of the AS2 hybrid bed. The coils offer zoned support, meaning the collection of coils in the middle of the bed––those that support the sleeper’s back–– are more dense and supportive. That way, your back should stay elevated and your spine should remain properly aligned.

Layer #4: 1” Base Foam

Amerisleep uses this 1” layer of base foam to keep the zoned coil layer from sitting directly on the bed frame. It also adds to the durability of the bed. The zoned coil system and supportive base foam make the Amerisleep AS2 one of the best king size mattresses.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping and Delivery

For residents in the contiguous United States, Amerisleep provides free standard curbside delivery with every mattress purchase. If you live in Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, Canada or any other region in the world, you can contact the company’s customer service line for a quote on shipping and delivery.

Once you place your order for a new mattress, you can expect it to ship within three to five business days. From there, it can take approximately one to five business days to arrive at your door. No signature is required for new mattress or accessory deliveries, with the exception of the Amerisleep adjustable base.

When your new mattress is delivered, the drivers cannot help bring the mattress inside and will leave it outside your home. The freight agents will call you to schedule a four hour delivery window between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Warranty

Amerisleep offers a 20-year warranty, divided into two halves. During the 10 years immediately after the purchase date, Amerisleep will replace or repair your mattress if there are any workmanship or structural defects. During the last 10 years of the warranty, the warranty is prorated, and Amerisleep will replace your mattress for 50 percent of the original purchase price. The buyer is responsible for transportation and shipping costs for the new mattress.

You can use your Amerisleep mattress with a box spring without violating the terms of the warranty, but you will first need to place a 0.75” piece of moisture-resistant plywood on top. To learn more, see our Amerisleep Mattress Warranty breakdown.

Trial Period

In our view, Amerisleep’s return policy is customer-friendly and accommodating. Your new mattress purchase comes with a risk-free 100-night sleep trial. During that time period, you can return your mattress for a hassle-free refund. If you would like to try a different Amerisleep mattress, you can contact customer support and request an exchange. You’re entitled to one free exchange within the 100-night sleep trial period, and there are no hidden fees or penalties.

The company will arrange for someone to come pick up the returned mattress, and Amerisleep works to recycle or donate mattresses that are returned. In some cases, you might notice a difference in your sleep quality after the first night, but Amerisleep recommends that you give yourself at least 30 days to break in your new mattress to get the proper sleep experience.

Comparing the Amerisleep AS2 Mattress

Amerisleep AS2 vs. GhostBed Mattress

The GhostBed original mattress is just a bit softer than the AS2 mattress; around a 6/10 on the firmness scale compared to the AS2’s 7/10 rating. Though it might not offer quite as much support for back and stomach sleepers as the AS2, the GhostBed is constructed with a cooling cover made with moisture-wicking fabric. It also has a layer of latex for added cooling.

Cost-effectiveness is another consideration with the GhostBed. While the AS2 starts at around $1,000 for a Twin size, the GhostBed is just $545 for a Twin.

Amerisleep AS2 vs. Loom & Leaf

Though the Loom & Leaf comes in a relaxed-firm and firm version, the firm version will be the closest in feel to the AS2. It has a similar high price tag as the AS2, but both of these are high-quality purchases backed by competitive warranty policies.

Unlike the AS2, the Loom & Leaf cradles the body’s pressure points a bit more like traditional memory foam. It comes with a 120-night trial period and a 15 year warranty.

Amerisleep AS2 vs. Helix

With 13 different beds in the Helix line and a branded quiz to see which is right for certain sleep types, Helix Sleep’s “something for everyone” business model seems almost identical to Amerisleep’s line of beds.

Out of the entire Helix line, the Helix Plus seems most similar to the AS2. It’s a firm bed that’s built specifically for heavier sleepers and those who sleep hot. The Helix Plus is also the same height as the AS2 (12” tall).

What’s the Bottom Line?

The Amerisleep AS2 is a comfortable, medium-firm mattress that promotes spinal alignment and pressure relief for back and stomach sleepers. While the price point is a bit high for a non-traditional foam mattress, the unique cooling technology, proprietary pressure relief and outstanding policies make the AS2 a solid choice for those with a larger mattress budget. Considering Amerisleep’s 100-night risk-free sleep trial, we think the AS2 is definitely worth a try.
