The Best Amerisleep Mattress by Sleeping Position

Mattresses are like prescription glasses; they’re insanely personal items that we all rely on for our physical well-being. A mattress should feel like the right pair of glasses; it should feel made to suit your needs. Mattresses can be personalized using different materials with different thicknesses to work for people who sleep on their sides, backs or stomachs. That’s why we should take a moment to consider each position in turn. I want to give all types of sleepers some walking instructions about choosing a mattress. I want you to know which of the five Amerisleep mattresses will work specifically for you.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers need a mix of pressure relief, firmness and lower back support to sleep well. Normally it’s tough to find all three in a foam-only mattress. Foam mattresses do effectively cradle pressure points like the hips and shoulders to relieve a lot of pain in those spots. However, if they’re too soft, they won’t support the torso and neck, which are lighter. Your spine won’t lie straight and that will could lead to pain or soreness. Side sleepers and combo sleepers who shift positions during slumber will find a lot to like in the medium-firm A3 and medium A4 models since both will cradle those larger curves without allowing the rest of your body to sink under the weight.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers are doing all sorts of favors for their body by sleeping in the healthiest position, the way nature intended on their back. Your spine can rest in its most neutral position while you’re on your back. You avoid placing undue pressure on your hips, shoulders or chest. Back sleepers need a firmer mattress to support their neck and spine, but, at the very top of the mattress, it must still curve around their hips and butt. So medium to firm models work well for back sleepers, who don’t want their spine sinking into the layers. Hybrid mattresses normally offer enough support, but firmer foam offerings can do the trick, too. The A1 and A2 are the firmest models here so are good choices for back sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers

Sleeping on your stomach puts pressure and weight on parts of the body that you shouldn’t be weighing down unnecessarily. It’s tough on the body to sleep on your chest and hips. So stomach sleepers should search for a firmer mattress with cradling materials at the top to curve around their stomachs and hips. The mattress must keep your hips and lumbar region of your spine in line with the rest of your spine. If your hips sink too deep, you’re creating an arch in your lower back that can lead to soreness, pain and potential problems. Again, a firmer mattress, like the A1 and A2, are solid options for stomach sleepers.

The Amerisleep AS1 mattress is made of two foam layers with a cover meant to keep you cool and turn your body heat into energy. Originally called the Americana, it is the most firm and thinnest (10 inches) model in the AS line, but has a plush top layer so it does relieve some pressure.

  • Layer 1: High-performance CELLIANT® mattress cover is woven with Thermo-reactive minerals that turn body heat into energy. It keeps you cool and helps you recover during the night.
  • Layer 2: This cooling layer is memory foam made with an open-cell structure. It’s not just a solid slab of foam that would only retain heat. The open cells allow heat to escape.
  • Layer 3: The support layer is made of Bio-Core™ foam, made from plants, that the company says will not sag even after “decades of use.”

The Amerisleep AS2 mattress is made of three layers of foam with a futuristic cover that is supposed to take the heat from your body and give it back to you in the form of energy. Originally known as the Revere, this is the company’s most popular mattress mostly because it comes in that perfect medium-firm feel, as medium-firm mattresses satisfy most sleepers.

  • Layer 1: High-performance CELLIANT® cover is woven with Thermo-reactive minerals that have been proven to reduce pain, regulate body temperature and help with blood circulation.
  • Layer 2: The Bio-Pur™ foam is more breathable than traditional memory foam because it has an open-cell structure. That will release heat and keep you cooler and dryer through the night.
  • Layer 3: The transition layer, a.k.a. The “Affinity layer”, gives more pressure relief for the shoulders and hips. This layer is cut like an egg carter, so there are air channels that will carry heat away.
  • Layer 4: The support layer is the thickest layer. It holds everything up and keeps you stable. This foam is also partially derived from plant sources, so it’s easier on the earth.

The Amerisleep AS3 is another three-layer mattress of foam with that CELLIANT® cover. This one used to known as the Liberty. It’s a tad softer than the AS2 and feels more like a true medium. You’ll sink a little deeper into the layers because the mattress will hug you while contouring around your body’s curves.

  • Layer 1: The new-age cover is woven from Thermo-reactive minerals that help your body recover while it rests. It does that by reducing pain, increasing circulation and keeping you cool.
  • Layer 2: This cooling layer has more breathability than you normally find with memory foam. The Bio-Pur™ manages that because the foam is built with an “open-cell” structure. The cells are not as close and air can get into this layer to carry heat away.
  • Layer 3: The transition layer has both a soft feel and some bounce. Traditional foam mattresses could feel like they were swallowing you whole. The bounce of this layer prevents that. You can get up and out with ease thanks to this layer.
  • Layer 4: The support layer is made of  AmeriSleep’s proprietary Bio-Core™ foam. They confidently say the mattress will not sag for decades thanks to this foam.

The Amerisleep AS4 is made of three layers of different types and densities of foam, all covered with CELLIANT® fabric. This model was known initially as the Colonial. It feels medium-soft and is great for contouring to the body for people who like that as they sleep.

  • Layer 1: This cover, featuring fabric woven from special mineral fibers, is sort of magical. It takes your body heat out of the fabric and spits it back to you as energy.
  • Layer 2: The cooling layer is breathable thanks to the open-cell structure of the foam. Foam doesn’t normally release heat. One adaptation to that problem was using an open-cell structure so the foam is breathable and more comfortable for sleepers.
  • Layer 3: The transition layer is zoned to be stronger where the body is heaviest and more forgiving where the body is lighter. That’s how you relieve pressure without placing undue stress on different body parts. This layer is shaped with channels that also carry heat away from the mattress so you sleep cooler.
  • Layer 4: This support layer features Bio-Core™ that isn’t supposed to sag even after decades of use. This foam is also partially created using plant sources, not chemical ones.

The AmeriSleep AS5 is the softest and thickest mattress in the line with four different types of foam encased in a special Thermo-reactive, fabric cover.  The AS5 used to be called the Independence, but still has the plushest feel of the five Amerisleep mattresses—it hugs, cradles and contours to your body.

  • Layer 1: The CELLIANT® cover is meant to turn body heat into energy that reduces pain and helps your body recover well from the day’s activities.
  • Layer 2: This layer breathes. And when it comes to foam, you need it to breathe to keep you cool. In the AS line, the foam has an open-cell structure which gives heat an exit path. You’ll stay cooler and dryer.
  • Layer 3: You will only find the Active Flex foam in this middle layer of the A5. It’s specifically made for the plushest mattress in the AS line. It flexes, or bounces so, even though this is a soft mattress, sleepers can bounce up and out of it and move around in it without sinking and getting lost in it.
  • Layer 4: This ergonomic transition layer comes with Surface Modification Technology (SMT). That’s a fancy way to say the foam has different areas on the same layer that act differently to weight and pressure. The heavier a body part, the stronger it is. The lighter the body part, the easier it will give. That keeps your spine aligned. This foam is also cut in a way that to leave channels through the length of the layer, channels that allow heat to escape to keep you cooler.
  • Layer 5: The support layer is made of the same Bio-Core™ as the other four mattresses. Amerisleep says it will last for decades without sagging.

The Amerisleep Buying Experience

Amerisleep Trial-Period

Amerisleep has a 100-night trial period. You can exchange for a different model (aka different firmness level) or ask for a full refund during the sleep trial. You just have to make sure to initiate the return before 100 nights is up. Amerisleep will arrange a time to fetch the mattress from you. Keep in mind, it takes about 30 days to adjust to a new sleep surface so Amerisleep asks that you sleep in your new bed for at least 30 days before asking for a return.

Amerisleep Mattress Warranty

Amerisleep offers a 20-year warranty on all its mattresses. You are covered for any issues relating to how the mattress was built (craftsmanship) or it’s quality (materials). The warranty only covers the original buyer. It also covers visible sags greater than ¾ inch but does not cover normal wear and tear. If you have to use the warranty within the first 10 years, your entire purchase is covered. If Amerisleep agrees the mattress is defective during that time, it will either repair or replace it for free. If something goes awry with the mattress in the second 10 years, you will pay 50 percent of your original purchase price to replace the mattress. You’ll also pay for the shipping both ways.

The warranty is valid so long as you’re using the mattress properly and you’ve been using it on a strong flat foundation. There are some conditions related to box springs. Basically, don’t use a box spring and you’ll be compliant.

Shipping and Delivery

Amerisleep mattresses are compressed into eco-friendly boxes and ship completely free within the lower 48 states. They ship in about 3-5 working days via FedEx with curbside delivery. (Yes, call a friend to help you haul it into the house.) You’ll need to let your new mattress expand for at least 4-6 hours before sleeping in it. And it will take up to 24 hours to fully re-inflate.

Amerisleep mattresses are available to purchase online on the company website, on Amazon, and at retail stores in select cities in Arizona, Oregon, Colorado, and Texas.

Amerisleep has been in business for 12 years and they haven’t wasted their time. They have developed more eco-friendly foams to reduce their use of petroleum in their products and have pushed for ways to put more bounce into those foams. Their mattresses come in every firmness level from firm to soft in an attempt to appeal to every type of sleep position. With so many options, they really do have something workable for most sleepers on the hunt for a new sleep experience.
