The Mattress Nerd’s Take: The Amerisleep AS1 mattress is a firm, breathable memory foam mattress that is most comfortable for stomach sleepers and back sleepers. However, side sleepers will probably find the AS1 a bit uncomfortable because it is too firm to provide the kind of pressure relief side sleepers need. If you’re looking for a memory foam mattress with a firm feel, the AS1 could be the perfect fit.

Back Sleepers

The Amerisleep AS1 is a great mattress for back sleepers, who are lightweight and average-weight, thanks to its firm construction. Lying on your back is the best position for proper spinal health, but if you’re sleeping on the wrong type of mattress, your sleep position won’t make much difference. Since the AS1 is firm, it supports the natural curvature of your spine and keeps it in line with your neck, which helps reduce morning pain and stiffness. Still, an all-foam mattress like the Amerisleep might not be firm and supportive enough to offer a great sleeping surface for heavyweight sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers

Many mattresses that are good for back sleepers or side sleepers aren’t great for stomach sleepers. This is because when you sleep on your stomach, your spine naturally wants to sink down into the mattress, which can cause back pain. To avoid this problem, stomach sleepers generally need a mattress with a pretty high firmness level compared to other kinds of sleepers. The AS1 is perfect for lightweight and average-weight people who sleep on their stomach, but it might not provide enough support to keep the hips elevated and achieve spinal alignment for heavyweight sleepers. For our recommendations, check out our list on the best mattress for stomach sleepers.

Side Sleepers

Side sleeping is the most common sleeping position, although sleeping on your side is not always the best position for your spine. Side sleepers need a mattress that is soft enough to cradle their shoulders and hips to prevent pressure from building up in their joints. Unfortunately, the Amerisleep AS1 doesn’t relieve pressure in the joints very well. It’s so firm, it will likely interfere with the spinal alignment of most side sleepers, especially plus-size side sleepers. Lightweight and average-weight side sleepers might find that the bed will still work for them, but we think they’ll be better off with a softer Amerisleep bed. For other pressure-relieving beds, see our best mattresses for side sleepers.

Combination Sleepers

Finding the right mattress for combination sleepers can be tricky because combination sleepers tend to change position throughout the night. So, the most important aspect of the mattress for these types of sleepers is responsiveness. Combination sleepers need their mattress to bounce back quickly and respond to their movement, so they don’t have to fully wake up every time they change positions. The AS1 is fairly responsive, but it’s definitely not the most responsive mattress on the market. If you’re a lightweight or average-weight combination sleeper who spends a lot of time on your stomach throughout the night, the AS1 should work great for you. If you’re a plus-size combination sleeper who spends any time on your side, the AS1 might not be the best fit for you.

How Does the Amerisleep AS1 Mattress Feel?

Responsiveness, Bounce and Ease of Movement

The AS1 is a little different from most all-foam varieties because of its firm feel and relatively high responsiveness. When you lie down on this mattress, it cushions your pressure points, such as the shoulders and hips, but you don’t sink deeply into the mattress like you might with other memory foam models. If you are looking for a plusher memory foam feel, check out our Best Pillow Top Mattresses.

The AS1 isn’t as responsive as an innerspring mattress or a latex mattress, but it does respond fairly quickly to your movements. If you prefer a very bouncy bed, this may not be the mattress for you. But if you just need a little bounce along with firm support, then the AS1 definitely fits the bill.

How Firm is this Mattress?

The AS1 is the firmest mattress of all the Amerisleep mattress models, which range from the AS1 to the AS5 design. It is a great firmness level for stomach sleepers and back sleepers who prefer more support, but it is not ideal for side sleepers because it won’t properly cradle sensitive joints like the hips and shoulders. This mattress will feel very firm for lightweight sleepers, and for heavyweight sleepers it will feel firm but might have a little more give.

Does it Sleep Hot?

Memory foam is great at cushioning and contouring the body, but it has a strong reputation for sleeping hot. However, Amerisleep’s special Bio-Pur foam sleeps much cooler than normal memory foam. The open cell construction and plant-based materials used to create the foam make the AS1 a great mattress for hot sleepers who still want the comfort of memory foam.

Is the Amerisleep AS1 Good for Couples?

If you sleep with a partner, it’s important to choose a mattress that is well-suited for couples. If you or your partner tend to toss and turn at night, you need a mattress for couples with good motion isolation. The AS1 has decent motion isolation, but because it’s so firm, it’s not as good as other memory foam beds that are best at preventing motion transfer. If reducing motion transfer is your No. 1 priority, look for a bed with soft, traditional-feeling memory foam that makes you feel like you’re sinking into the top layer of the mattress.

How’s the Edge Support?

One area where the AS1 really shines is edge support. This means that when you sit on the edge of your bed in the morning to put on your shoes, or if you roll over at night and sleep close to the edge of the bed, it doesn’t collapse under your weight. The edges of the AS1 have just as much support as the middle, so we give it top marks in the edge support category.

Construction: What’s Under the Surface?

Amerisleep AS1 Layers
Amerisleep AS1 Layers

The AS1 mattress is designed with a simple construction of two layers of foam and a soft, breathable cover to create a quality memory foam mattress. This simple construction makes the AS1 great for lightweight sleepers, but for heavier folks, a mattress with only two layers may quickly become uncomfortable. Let’s take a closer look at the AS1 construction.

Layer #1: Refresh Cooling Cover: The top layer of this mattress is the cooling cover, which Amerisleep says will keep you up to seven degrees cooler than a 100 percent polyester cover. The cover is cool-to-the-touch, and it’s supposed to transform body heat into infrared energy, which helps prevent heat retention.

Layer #2: Bio-Pur Foam: The second layer in the AS1 mattress is a special memory foam called Bio-Pur foam. This is a proprietary foam created by Amerisleep that is eco-friendly, breathable, contouring and responsive. Bio-Pur foam meets CertiPUR-US certification, meaning it passes rigorous emissions and performance tests. It also has an open-cell structure that prevents heat buildup much better than traditional memory foam. The responsiveness is great for combination sleepers and anyone who doesn’t want to feel “stuck” in their mattress.

Layer #3: Bio-Core Foam: Finally, the base layer in the AS1 Amerisleep mattress is the Bio-Core foam layer, which is another proprietary high-density foam created by Amerisleep that makes up the mattress’s support layer. Because of the thick layer of high-density Bio-Core foam, the AS1 is much firmer than most memory foam mattresses. This foam also keeps the mattress from sagging, even with average-weight and heavyweight sleepers.

Comparing the Amerisleep AS1 Mattress

Amerisleep AS1 vs. Amerisleep AS4

This mattress is no longer available for purchase. To help you find your next mattress, check out our list of the best mattresses available on the market now.

The Amerisleep AS1 mattress is firm and supportive, making it a great option for stomach sleepers and back sleepers who like a little extra support. However, it is not the best option for side sleepers.

If you tend to sleep on your side, you will likely prefer the AS4 mattress, which is specifically designed for side sleepers. It is a medium-soft firmness, and it has a thicker comfort layer of Bio-Pur foam, plus a transition layer meant to provide pressure relief to sensitive joints like the hips and shoulders.

Amerisleep AS1 vs. ZenHaven

This mattress is no longer available for purchase. To help you find your next mattress, check out our list of the best mattresses available on the market now.

The Amerisleep AS1 is a firm mattress, but because of its memory foam construction, it doesn’t have the best bounce. If you are looking for a bouncy mattress with a gentle-firm feel, then you may prefer the ZenHaven mattress instead.

The ZenHaven mattress is made with a core layer of solid latex and a layer of softer latex on the top and bottom. One side of the mattress is made to feel soft and plush, while the other has a medium-firm feel. Both sides are pleasantly bouncy thanks to the latex construction.

Amerisleep AS1 vs. Casper

This mattress is no longer available for purchase. To help you find your next mattress, check out our list of the best mattresses available on the market now.

Both the Amerisleep AS1 and the Casper Original mattress are all-foam mattresses that have a lot in common. They are both on the firmer side, although the Casper is slightly softer, and they both offer great edge support and spinal alignment.

If you prefer firm support over pressure relief, the AS1 is the best mattress for you. However, if you prefer pressure relief and responsiveness over firm support, then the Casper may be more your style. The Casper is made with three layers of foam, and the middle layer is specifically designed to help relieve pressure in the shoulders and lower back.

What’s the Bottom Line?

The Amerisleep AS1 is a high-quality foam mattress with great edge support and temperature regulation, and most stomach sleepers and back sleepers will likely find it very comfortable. If you’re a side sleeper, we don’t recommend this mattress because it is too firm to provide the proper pressure relief and cushioning for your hips and shoulders. But it’s still a great, responsive bed for combination sleepers and anyone who is looking for a firm and supportive sleep surface. For other firm mattresses that may feel similar, see our Best Firm Mattresses.

FAQs:

Does the AS1 have a strong off-gassing smell?

Most foam mattresses tend to release an odor when they are unboxed because of the materials used to create the foam; Amerisleep is no exception. This smell should fade within a few days.

Where are Amerisleep mattresses made?

All Amerisleep mattresses are built in the USA.n

Should I use a box spring with my Amerisleep mattress?

Amerisleep recommends using a slatted or platform bed foundation instead of a box spring. If you want to use a box spring, the company recommends placing a 0.75u201d thick piece of moisture-resistant plywood between the box spring and the mattress to give the mattress a flat, even surface to rest on.
