How Does the Amerisleep AS3 Mattress Feel?

Firmness

Here at Mattress Nerd, we rate firmness on a scale from 1 to 10, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest. We rated the Amerisleep AS3 as a 5 out of 10 on this firmness scale, making it a medium mattress. 

When testing, we thought the AS3 had the feeling of sleeping on top of the mattress, rather than in it. If you are heavier or lighter than the average sleeper, this bed will feel softer or firmer, respectively, because of how deeply you sink based on your weight.

Temperature

Do you frequently find yourself kicking your covers off in the night? Is your fan your best friend? You might be a hot sleeper—in which case, a mattress’s cooling capabilities are going to be an important factor in choosing your dream bed.

The AS3 is pretty good in regards to temperature. It’s got some good features, like the open-celled Bio-Pur foam, which allows for more airflow within the mattress than traditional memory foams. It also has a breathable cover, which will help prevent overheating.

However, it is still a memory foam mattress, and memory foam beds are rarely as cooling as a hybrid or innerspring mattresses, because coils allow for far more airflow. The AS3 should work well for the average hot sleeper. But for those hot sleepers that are more like human furnaces, we’ve got some more best cooling mattress recommendations that might be a better option.

Support

There are very few one-size-fits-all mattresses—every person has different sleep needs based on their sleeping position, size, health concerns, and general lifestyle. So, what kind of support a mattress offers will vary based on these factors.

The AS3 showed great spinal alignment and was quite responsive when we tested it out. It has a medium feel and is made with foam, so it’ll have some contouring but not too much sinkage for the average sleeper.

However, the AS3 did not have the best edge support. What’s that? It’s basically referring to how well the perimeter of the mattress bears weight. If you can’t lie along the edge of the bed without fear of falling off, that’s bad edge support. And unfortunately, that’s about where the AS3 falls on edge support. If you like to sit or lie along the edge of your bed, or if you share your bed with a partner, edge support may be a concern for you. If not, it may not really matter.

But, edge support can be a great indicator of how durable a mattress is. So with lackluster edge support, we’d say the AS3 is going to be average in terms of durability.

Back Sleepers

If you sleep on your back, what you want to consider when picking a mattress is how well that bed will support you and maintain the natural “S” curve of your spine. Fortunately, it’s generally easy to find a mattress that will fit that bill. 

The medium firmness of the AS3 will work well for lightweight to average-weight back sleepers. Heavyweight back sleepers will likely want something a little firmer and more supportive, such as the AS3 Hybrid mattress or another bed that uses coils in its construction. Side Sleepers

The best mattress for side sleepers will be one that maintains your spinal alignment and provides relief on pressure points like shoulders and hips. Being a medium firmness level, the AS3 will work best for average-weight side sleepers. We saw great spinal alignment and pressure relief in our tests, and those average-weight sleepers should sink in enough to get some cushioning but still be supported.

Lightweight side sleepers will probably find the AS3 to be too firm and heavyweight side sleepers might not get enough support from this all-foam bed.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers need a mattress that will be supportive and keep their hips elevated. If your hips sink down while you sleep, your spine will be out of alignment, which can lead to lower back pain. Lightweight stomach sleepers will be comfortable and supported on the AS3, but average-weight to heavyweight stomach sleepers will want something firmer. Combination Sleepers

Don’t have one primary sleep position? You’re what we, in the mattress world, like to call a combination sleeper. A big consideration for combination sleepers is responsiveness. A responsive mattress will be easy to move around on, which will help when you change positions throughout the night.

The AS3 is a very responsive mattress, particularly for an all-foam mattress. It’s bouncy and feels like you’re sleeping on top of the bed, rather than sinking into it. This mattress should work well for average-weight combination sleepers and some lightweight combination sleepers, depending on which positions you sleep in most.

Does It Fit Your Lifestyle?

Picking a mattress as a couple can be difficult. With two people’s needs to consider, as well as how the bed functions for two sleepers, things can get complicated. But here’s two considerations if you’re considering the AS3 for you and your partner.

The first: motion isolation. If you love your partner during the daytime but find yourself resenting them at night because their tossing and turning is constantly waking you up, motion isolation could be the answer to your problems. A bed that isolates motion well will prevent your partner’s movements from transferring across the bed and ultimately waking you up. 

Unfortunately, the AS3 did not score well in motion isolation when we tested it in our Nerd lab. Usually foam is best for preventing motion transfer, but the AS3 is also unusually bouncy and responsive for a foam bed, which is likely why the motion isolation is less than stellar.

The second consideration is another category the AS3 did not score well on: edge support. Edge support is important for couples sharing a bed because if it’s good, you can use the entire surface of your bed without feeling like you’re about to fall off. This is particularly key if you’re sharing a Full or Queen size bed. 

One solution would be to go with a King size, to ensure both partners have their space, but if a large mattress isn’t in your budget or you don’t have the space, consider a smaller bed with good edge support. To find more options, see our best mattresses for couples. 

Budget

It’s no secret that shopping for mattresses can be expensive. And if you have an unlimited budget, no problem! But for those with a little less cash to blow, it’s important to ensure that you’re getting a good mattress for a reasonable price.

The Amerisleep AS3 is on the high-end of mid-range mattresses in our price ranking, with the Queen size priced at $1,499. So relative to other beds on the market, the AS3 is on the more affordable side. But if the current pricing is still high for your budget, coupons and discounts can shave off some of that price. Construction: What’s Inside the Amerisleep AS3 Mattress? 

The Amerisleep AS3 is an all-foam mattress made to be breathable, with a medium-firm feel. The mattress is also available in a hybrid version, the AS3 Hybrid, which has a similar construction to the AS3, but uses innerspring coils in addition to foam.

All the foams used in the AS3 are low in VOCs, or Volatile Organic Compounds, and CertiPUR-US certified, meaning that they meet safety standards for the materials used in the foams. Additionally, Amerisleep’s proprietary Bio-Pur foam is manufactured in the U.S.

Layer #1: Ultra Breathable Comfort Cover: The cover of the AS3 is made of knit cotton and feels soft and breathable.

Layer #2: Bio-Pur Open Cell Foam: The next layer is the comfort layer, which is made with Amerisleep’s trademark Bio-Pur foam. Bio-Pur foam is a plant-based memory foam that’s very responsive. This foam is different than traditional memory foam because it has an open-cell structure, which essentially means there are small perforations in the foam. This allows for more airflow in the foam, making the mattress cooler. 

Layer #3: Targeted Pressure Relief System: This transition layer is Amerisleep’s signature HIVE targeted support system. This foam layer has extra support in key areas, including under your head, back, and legs, that will help to maintain your alignment and relieve pressure. 

Layer #4: Bio-Core Base Layer: The final support layer of the mattress is supportive, durable foam.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

Amerisleep offers free shipping with FedEx within the contiguous United States on all of their mattresses, which is a huge plus, because who likes to pay shipping fees? For those living in Hawaii or Alaska, Amerisleep will ship to a freight forwarder, who can ship the mattress to those locations, but this is up to the customer to arrange and pay for, so it’s not the cheapest or most convenient option for those shoppers.

You can expect your Amerisleep mattress to ship within five to seven days of your order being placed, and then once it has shipped, it can take another seven business days to be delivered. As of now, Amerisleep does not offer any white glove delivery service.

The AS3 is a bed-in-a-box, so that’s how it will arrive at your home—compressed and rolled into an eco-friendly box! To unbox the AS3, all you have to do is take it out of the box, cut open the packaging, roll it onto the base, and wait for it to expand.

Warranty

Most mattresses will come with a warranty that covers manufacturing issues and defects. Amerisleep offers a 20-year warranty, but there are different terms for the first and second 10 years. 

The first 10 years are a full-replacement warranty, so Amerisleep will replace your mattress if there are any flaws or defects as a result of the manufacturing, or if the mattress develops an indentation greater than 0.75”. The second 10 years are a prorated warranty, meaning that Amerisleep will replace your mattress for 50 percent of the original purchasing price. In those second 10 years, you’ll also have to pay shipping costs if you decide to replace your mattress.

Trial Period & Returns

If you’ve never bought a mattress online before, you’re probably wondering how you’re supposed to spend this much money on a product you’ve never even tested out before. Thankfully, that’s where sleep trials come in. Most online mattress retailers will offer a sleep trial period, during which you can test out the mattress at home by actually sleeping on it every night. 

Amerisleep offers a 100-night sleep trial period, which is pretty standard in the mattress industry. During those 100 nights, you can sleep on the AS3 and decide whether you want to keep it or not. If you decide not to keep the mattress, Amerisleep’s return policy is to give you a full refund. The brand will also help you coordinate a donation of your returned mattress, so that it goes to someone in need.

An important caveat in Amerisleep’s trial is that they require you to sleep on the mattress for at least 30 nights before you can request a return and refund. This is because it can take time to fully adjust to a new mattress and assess if it’s right for you. If you do want to return before those 30 days, Amerisleep will charge you a $99 early processing fee. So make sure to take your time and decide if the AS3 is right for you.

What’s the Bottom Line?

The Amerisleep AS3 is a good mattress for the average sleeper. It’s medium firmness will be pretty comfortable for average-weight sleepers of any style, but lightweight and heavyweight sleepers might need a softer or firmer mattress, respectively. As far as cooling capabilities, the AS3 is average, so most people will be comfortable but super hot sleepers will want something cooler. If you’re an average sleeper without many specialized sleep needs, the AS3 is a great mid-range price mattress.
