The Mattress Nerd’s Take: The Amerisleep AS4 mattress is made from several different cooling materials that are also designed to relieve pressure and prevent back pain. Side sleepers, combination sleepers and hot sleepers who enjoy a medium-soft feel will find the AS4 most comfortable. On the other hand, we think stomach sleepers and people who prefer a firm mattress probably won’t enjoy the AS4.

Who is the Amerisleep AS4 Mattress Best for?

Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  4 3 5
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 4 2 5
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  3 2 4

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers enjoy the most natural sleeping position for proper spine alignment. For decent support, they require mattresses that aren’t overly soft or stiff as a board. The AS4 may be a little too pliable for heavyweight sleepers because the back may sink too deeply into the mattress to ensure optimal comfort. However, the AS4 works perfectly well for average-weight and lightweight back sleepers who enjoy a softer mattress.

Stomach Sleepers

For the best support and alignment, stomach sleepers need a relatively firm mattress with great pressure relief. This keeps the lower back and hips from sinking into the mattress and curving the spine, causing back pain. Because the AS4 is such a soft mattress, most stomach sleepers won’t find it very comfortable. Though average-weight and lightweight stomach sleepers have a chance of achieving comfort on this mattress, it may be especially problematic for heavyweight sleepers because the spine is likely to sink down farther and cause pain.

Side Sleepers

The AS4 is a great mattress option for side sleepers because of its firmness level and pressure-relieving properties. Side sleeping leads to pressure buildup in pressure points throughout the body, like the hips, lower back and shoulders. To relieve that pressure, side sleepers need a soft but supportive mattress that redistributes body weight evenly. Lightweight, average-weight and plus-size side sleepers can rest easy knowing their pressure points are getting the cushioning they need, thanks to the AS4’s targeted pressure relief system.

Combination Sleepers

If you tend to move around a lot in your sleep, never really sticking to one position, then you are probably what we call a “combination sleeper.” Combination sleepers tend to sleep best on mattresses that are highly responsive and react quickly to movement. This is because a highly responsive mattress allows a combination sleeper to move around easily, without having to fully wake up every time they want to shift positions. Amerisleep highly recommends this particular mattress for combination sleepers, because the AS4 is very responsive and allows for easy movement. Heavyweight combination sleepers may find it slightly harder to shift position than lightweight and average-weight combination sleepers, but regardless of weight, the AS4 is considered a very good mattress for combination sleepers.

How Does the Amerisleep AS4 Mattress Feel?

Responsiveness, Bounce and Ease of Movement

Out of all of the Amerisleep models, the AS4 has the best combination of responsiveness and plush softness. When you lie down on the AS4, you get the familiar cushioning feeling of memory foam, but you don’t feel “stuck” in it. The responsive foam allows you to easily shift position, making it a very comfortable mattress for combination sleepers.

How Firm is this Mattress?

The Amerisleep AS4 is a medium-soft mattress, which means it’s not the firmest or the softest mattress on the market, but it is definitely softer than it is firm. It is 12” thick, which is a robust size for a bed-in-a-box mattress. Heavyweight sleepers tend to be more comfortable on thicker mattresses, regardless of firmness, and the 12” thickness of the AS4 is definitely on the thicker end compared to other beds in the mattress industry.

Does it Sleep Hot?

One of the best parts about the AS4 mattress is its breathability and cooling properties. The AS4 sleeps cooler than some more basic memory foam mattresses, which tend to sleep hot. Two out of the four layers of this mattress are specifically designed with temperature regulation in mind, making the AS4 one of the best cooling mattresses in the Amerisleep line. The Bio-Pur foam and Celliant cover both help reduce heat buildup and keep you cool all night long.

Is It Good for Couples?

One of the most important factors to consider when buying a mattress for couples is motion isolation. If you sleep with a partner who tends to toss and turn all night, you don’t want to feel that motion transferring to your side of the bed and waking you up. Thanks to the medium-soft firmness and contouring support of the memory foam, the AS4 has relatively low motion transfer and high motion isolation. In general, the bed is a fairly good choice for couples in which one or both partners are restless sleepers.

How’s the Edge Support?

Edge support is an indication of how well the edges of a mattress hold their shape when under pressure. Having strong, sturdy edge support is important for sleepers who tend to roll close to the edge of the mattress during their sleep, or for those who sit on the edge of the bed to tie their shoes. Mattresses with weak edge support tend to cave in under pressure, which can make you feel like you’re about to slide off the mattress. The AS4 has decent edge support, though not as strong as some other Amerisleep models, like the AS1. Firmer mattresses tend to have better edge support, so it makes sense that the AS4, a medium-soft mattress, doesn’t have perfect edge support.

Construction: What’s Under the Surface?

The construction of any mattress will feel slightly different depending on each individual’s size and weight. The AS4 is a medium-soft mattress that offers both comfort and support, especially for lightweight and average-weight sleepers. Heavyweight sleepers may find the medium-soft firmness too soft: In fact, the comfort layers might compress completely under a plus-size sleeper, leaving the sleeper to rest directly on the less-comfortable support layer. Regardless of weight, the construction of the AS4 mattress makes it breathable and cool, a great touch for hot sleepers.

Layer #1: Celliant Cover: The zippered removable cover of the AS4 Amerisleep mattress is made with a material called Celliant. This Celliant fiber material effectively transforms body heat into infrared energy which then dissipates, preventing heat buildup and working to keep you cool all night long.

Layer #2: Bio-Pur Memory Foam: The top layer is a proprietary type of memory foam called Bio-Pur. Amerisleep created this open cell foam using renewable plant-based oils. It’s different from traditional memory foam because it tends to sleep cooler. Most memory foams retain heat, but thanks to the open cell structure of the Bio-Pur foam, air flows freely through the bed and helps reduce heat buildup.

Layer #3: HIVE Transition Foam: This transition layer is the main reason the AS4 is such a great mattress for side sleepers. The HIVE transition foam is a specially designed targeted pressure relief system. The reason we call it “targeted” is because it offers firmer support for low-pressure areas like your head, feet and legs, and creates more pressure-relieving cushioning for heavier areas like the hips and shoulders.

Layer #4: Bio-Core Base Foam: The base layer in this all-foam mattress is the Bio-Core base foam layer. This is high-density support foam meant to give the mattress a solid, supportive base to keep it from sagging for five, 10 or even 20 years. Just like the Bio-Pure foam, the base foam layer is made from renewable plant-based oils. It’s also CertiPUR-US certified, making it a great choice for eco-friendly shoppers.

Comparing the Amerisleep AS4 Mattress

Amerisleep AS4 vs. Amerisleep AS2

Amerisleep AS2

The best mattress from Amerisleep for stomach and back sleepers who like a medium-firm firmness level. This mattress is made to appeal to a wide range of sleepers and comes with a reasonable price point.

The Amerisleep AS4 is a breathable memory foam mattress that’s great for hot sleepers, side sleepers and couples. Thanks to its medium-soft firmness level and 12” thickness, it’s great for sleepers of all sizes, and it has a luxurious, plush feel.

The Amerisleep AS2 has many of the same perks as the AS4, such as eco-friendly foam, cooling properties and 12” thickness, but it’s designed for a very different type of sleeper. The AS2 is much firmer, making it a better option for stomach sleepers and folks who want to feel like they’re sleeping “on” a mattress rather than “in” one.

Amerisleep AS4 vs. Tuft & Needle Mint

Tuft and Needle Mint

While not actually considered “memory foam," the Mint is an excellent all-foam mattress. Made with their proprietary Adaptive Foam layers that protect the back and cradle the hips, the Mint is an appealing all-foam option—not to mention its layers are infused with heat-wicking graphite to maintain a cool sleeping surface.

If you like the sound of the Amerisleep AS4 but it’s a bit out of your price range, the Tuft & Needle Mint is a very similar model available at a budget-friendly price. The T&N Mint mattress provides excellent responsiveness, cooling and edge support, and the price ranges from $595 to $1,145.

However, the extra cash spent on the Amerisleep AS4 provides you with better pressure relief and a much softer feel. If you are a side sleeper or if softness is especially important to you, the AS4 might be worth the extra investment.

Amerisleep AS4 vs. Puffy Lux

Puffy Lux

The Puffy Lux mattress is an upgrade from the original and popular all-foam offering. “Lux” means Puffy enhanced the features and uses more advanced materials. It comes with a higher price tag than the original Puffy, but if thickness with more cushioning is what you need, then this may be the mattress for you.

The Amerisleep AS4 is a medium-soft mattress designed for side sleepers and combination sleepers, but there are other, firmer mattresses that can also work for those two sleeper types. The Puffy Lux offers similar responsiveness, pressure relief and spinal alignment as the AS4, but it has a medium-firm feel rather than medium-soft.

If you’re a side sleeper who needs extra pressure relief for your hips and shoulders but still prefers a firm mattress, then the Puffy Lux is a great alternative to the AS4.

FAQs:

What are the other Amerisleep mattresses like?

The Amerisleep mattress models range from the firmest (AS1) to the softest (AS5). All of the models are memory foam beds designed with cooling properties, but each one is primarily suited for a different type of sleeper. The AS1 and AS2 are best for stomach sleepers, while the AS4 and AS5 are better for side sleepers. The AS3 is their medium-firmness model, and it is a great option for all kinds of sleepers.

Where are Amerisleep mattresses made?

Every new bed from Amerisleep is made in the USA. The company also offers free shipping throughout the contiguous U.S..

What’s the Bottom Line?

Overall, Amerisleep is a great sleep company with a stellar reputation. Though Amerisleep’s AS4 mattress is a great option for many sleepers, it’s not for everyone. If you are a side sleeper or combination sleeper or if you tend to get hot at night, then the AS4 could be a comfortable fit for you. However, if you tend to sleep on your stomach or if you prefer a firm mattress, then the AS4 may not be the best fit.
