The original Bear Mattress is a highly rated memory foam mattress that’s popular throughout the United States. People love the various features of the Bear: it has a Celliant fiber mattress cover that promotes muscle recovery and blood flow, a graphite gel-infused memory foam for cooling and a dense support foam base for durability.

Here at Mattress Nerd, we’ve written reviews on the Bear Mattress and the Bear Hybrid Mattress. However, despite all the selling points of this foam-feel mattress, some Bear Mattress reviews report that it may not be the best mattress for everyone.

Some Bear customers have reported complaints about its flagship mattress, arguing that it doesn’t live up to their expectations. Bear offers transparency by displaying mixed reviews on its website. They’ve addressed the most common pieces of feedback and offered their own solutions. Read on to learn more about these four main complaints on and Amazon, and find out how you can resolve them:

  1. Mattress is too firm
  2.  Mattress sleeps hot
  3.  Mattress smells
  4.  Mattress causes hip and back pain

Top Bear Mattress Complaints

Mattress is Too Firm

Mattress firmness is typically rated on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the most firm. If you are a side sleeper, it’s recommended that you try a softer or medium-firm plush mattress that allows for better hip and shoulder support. If you’re a stomach sleeper or back sleeper, you’ll want a firmer surface that prevents your hips from sinking in and allows for optimal spinal alignment.

The Bear Mattress is rated a 7/10 on the firmness scale, which makes it firmer than many other bedding options in its class. This high firmness level allows it to accommodate back sleepers,  combination sleepers and certain stomach sleepers by supporting the shoulders, hips, back, and neck. The mattress also encourages spinal alignment for a reduced chance of back pain or neck pain.

However, since most memory foam mattresses typically rate between 5 and 6 on the firmness scale, the Bear can be too firm for traditional foam lovers, especially if they sleep on their sides.

  • Overall, the Bear Mattress may be on the firmer side, but it is designed to be accommodating for most back and combination sleepers.
  • If you want to soften your sleep surface, we recommend purchasing the Pro Topper, which is made of 2 inches of copper-infused memory foam and allows for a soft layer between you and the surface of your mattress.
  • The Bear mattress comes with a mandatory 30-day break-in period. See if your mattress changes in firmness or feel during those 30 days.
  • If you’re physically able, try standing up on your new Bear mattress each day and taking a few steps on its surface. This can help loosen the new memory foam and make it much softer.
  • Warmth will make the memory foam softer over time, so it could help if you raised the thermostat and warmed up your bedroom. The graphite gel memory foam should still help keep you sufficiently cool throughout the night: and if that’s your primary concern, check out our best cooling mattresses.

Mattress Sleeps Hot

One of the faults of the memory foam design is that it can sometimes cause people to sleep hot. When we sink into the foam, it gives us a cushioning hug that may feel soft and comfortable, but it can also cause body heat to become trapped, leading to overheating at night. Plus-size sleepers especially tend to feel warm when sleeping on memory foam since larger bodies tend to sink into the foam more.

Bear tries to mitigate the overheating aspect of memory foam by incorporating several features into the mattress’s construction. The breathable Celliant technology in the cover reflects infrared light and encourages airflow so that extra hot air is less likely to become trapped.

The graphite gel-infused memory foam further promotes high airflow, and the open-cell response foam is said to increase cooling up to 7 times more than the average foam mattress. Finally, the high-density support foam in the Bear base layer helps prevent you from sinking too far into the mattress. This lowers the chances of being sucked into the memory foam’s warm hug.

  • The Bear Mattress, like any memory foam mattress, may cause some heavier individuals to feel slightly warmer. Ultimately, though, most sleepers will relish in the comfort of the various cooling technologies found in its construction.
  • To increase the cooling abilities of the mattress, we recommend the cooling Pro Topper, which is made from naturally cooling copper-infused memory foam.
  • As always, hot sleepers can try sleeping with a window open, with a fan on a low setting, or with fewer blankets.

Bear Mattress Smells

During the manufacturing process for memory foam, certain chemicals and additives are mixed together to create a soft, durable mattress material. This process can cause the memory foam to emit a certain chemical-heavy smell, which is known as off-gassing. Since the memory foam mattresses are rolled and compressed into boxes before being shipped out to customers, that smell can linger in the material.

When you get your mattress, you might notice a certain “new mattress smell” during unboxing. This is completely harmless, but some reviewers have reported being bothered by this smell and even getting minor headaches from it.

The Bear Mattress uses CertiPUR-US certified foams and water-based bonding solutions, but there has been the occasional negative feedback from people who have had problems with the odor. Still, these complaints are far and few between.

  • The Bear Mattress uses non-off-gassing memory foam in its construction, but there are rare cases of people experiencing minor symptoms due to the odor.
  • The simplest way to mitigate the smell of your new memory foam mattress is to allow it to air out for approximately 8 to 12 hours after removing it from the box. Place it in a room with open windows or a fan, and the smell should dissipate shortly after.

Mattress Causes Hip and Back Pain

The Bear Mattress is higher on the firmness scale compared to other memory foam mattresses. Since it rates at 7 out of 10 in the firmness category, it is more accommodating for light to medium size back sleepers and some stomach sleepers who need better spinal alignment and support for their hips, shoulders, neck, back, and legs.

Side sleepers that try to use this mattress will notice that it’s not very accommodating for their hips and shoulders, which can lead to aches and pains in the morning. Certain back sleepers may also notice that the extra firm surface is much firmer than they’re used to with other memory foam beds.

There are also complaints from heavier individuals who try to use this mattress and wake up with pain in their hips. This is because the mattress may not be firm enough to support the hips in plus-size people, which can sink in and cause spinal misalignment. That is why this mattress is not recommended for heavier individuals or strict stomach sleepers.

  • The Bear Mattress may cause hip and back pain for heavier sleepers, stomach sleepers, and side sleepers. However, it contours and cradles the body properly for combination sleepers and back sleepers of light and medium size.
  • We recommend adding the copper-infused Pro Topper to soften the Bear Mattress for side sleepers. For heavier stomach sleepers, it may be better to go with a firmer hybrid mattress option that incorporates coils in its design. The company’s own Bear Hybrid mattress could be a good fit.
  • Step on your mattress’s “problem areas” a few times a day. This can soften the memory foam around heavier areas of your body and reduce the chance of aggravating pressure points.

What We Love About Bear Mattress

The Bear Mattress is a uniquely designed all-foam mattress that features four different layers, plus a Celliant cover that reflects infrared light and promotes faster muscle recovery and better blood circulation. The top layer of foam, also known as the comfort layer, is infused with graphite gel. This gel absorbs heat and wicks it away from you, keeping hot sleepers nice and cool all night long.

The second memory foam layer is made of bouncy yet responsive foam to deliver pressure relief to your hips, shoulders, and back while promoting spinal alignment. The third transition layer relieves additional pressure on your body.

The following layer is a slab of thick, high-density foam that helps the mattress retain its strength and durability. This mattress was made specially for back sleepers and combination sleepers, as well as athletes who need help with muscle recovery after a solid workout.

The multiple foam layers provide body contouring for most sleepers, but it also provides two additional features that you should consider when shopping for a mattress: motion isolation and edge support.

The Bear Mattress keeps motion from traveling across the surface of the bed, making it harder to wake up your partner in the middle of the night by tossing and turning. It also offers edge support to make getting in and out of bed easier over time.

  • Great for athletes and for couples
  • Celliant fibers help with muscle recovery
  • Uses cooling graphite gel-infused memory foam
  • Supportive firmness for back sleepers and stomach sleepers
