Is the GhostBed Luxe Mattress for You?

Who’s Going to Love the GhostBed Luxe Mattress

  • Side Sleepers: The GhostBed Luxe has a medium firmness that’s ideally suited to side sleeping. Two memory foam layers cradle your pressure points, while two firmer layers of support foam keep your spine lifted in alignment.
  • Memory Foam Fans: If you love the viscous feel of traditional memory foam, then the GhostBed Luxe is worth your consideration. It has all the benefits of memory foam—close body contouring, pressure relief, and spinal support—plus the Luxe is more affordable and sleeps cooler than other memory foam mattresses on the market.
  • Hot Sleepers: Memory foam has earned its reputation of sleeping hot, but GhostBed has put significant effort into its cooling technologies, including a cooling cover, cooling gel-infused foams, and a special Ghost Ice layer. As a result, it’s one of the best cooling mattresses for hot sleepers who love memory foam.

Who Should Steer Clear of the GhostBed Luxe Mattress

  • Stomach Sleepers: The GhostBed Luxe is too soft for all but the most petite stomach sleepers. We suggest looking for a medium-firm or firm mattress that does a better job of elevating the lower back. There are several of our favorite options on our roundup of best mattresses for stomach sleepers.
  • Heavyweight Folks: While the Luxe has the height needed for sleepers with larger profiles, it’s too soft for most people over 230 lbs. The only exception is heavyweight side sleepers who like a plush mattress feel. Instead, consider the Titan mattress by Brooklyn Bedding.
  • Budget Shoppers: The GhostBed Luxe is considered a luxury mattress. A Queen size costs $, so the pricing isn’t accessible for most budget shoppers. Instead, check out the best mattresses for the money.

GhostBed Luxe Mattress Firmness and Feel

GhostBed Luxe Mattress Firmness

The GhostBed Luxe is right in the middle of the firmness scale: a 5/10, which is great for side sleepers and back sleepers, but not ideal for stomach sleepers who need a more supportive firmness level

Medium and medium-firm mattresses cover a wide range of tastes, so the GhostBed Luxe will sink and cradle bodies a bit more at the top layers than a firmer mattress while keeping the average sleeper lifted above the support layers

If you have a body weight of over 230 lbs, you may put too much pressure on the mattress for it to keep your spine aligned properly. For more supportive mattresses, see the best firm mattresses.

What Does The GhostBed Luxe Feel Like?

The GhostBed Luxe has a traditional memory foam feel with a relatively slow response to pressure and a close, contouring hug around your curves. Despite those characteristics, the Luxe is actually fairly responsive to movement, so you should have good mobility on the mattress surface.

What Sleeping Position Is the GhostBed Luxe Best For?

Body Type: Back Sleepers Stomach Sleepers Side Sleepers
Lightweight < 130 lbs: 4 3 5
Average weight 130–230 lbs: 4 2 4
Heavyweight > 230 lbs: 3 2 4

1 = Very poor     2 = Not good     3 = Fair     4 = Good     5 = Excellent

Back Sleepers

With a nice blend of supportiveness and softness, the GhostBed Luxe is a great fit for lightweight and average-weight back sleepers. Spine alignment is crucial because it promotes a healthy posture, and the GhostBed Luxe does not disappoint. Its foam support core enhances the bed’s stability and helps you maintain a straight spine all night long.

However, this mattress is medium/medium-firm, which means that some strict back sleepers may prefer a firmer bed for added support—especially if they have a heavyweight body type. If you are looking for other mattresses that protect the spine, see the best mattress for back sleepers.

Side Sleepers

The GhostBed Luxe is one of the best mattresses for side sleepers; it cradles your pressure points, conforms to your body, and keeps your weight balanced so your hips and shoulders don’t catch the majority of the pressure. The layer of gel memory foam relieves tension in problem areas and the Ghost Bounce foam responds like latex, while still contouring to your curves.

Heavyweight, average-weight, and lightweight side sleepers alike will enjoy the feel of the Luxe.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers need a mattress that both supports and elevates their hips, while also contouring to their chest and shoulders. The GhostBed Luxe definitely contours to your body with its many memory foam layers, but its firmness is lacking, and heavyweight and average-weight stomach sleepers may find themselves sinking into the mattress, causing their spine to curve inwards.

Lightweight stomach sleepers may have a better experience on the GhostBed Luxe because there’s not as much hip weight sinking into the mattress. If the GhostBed Luxe is not the right mattress for you, see the best mattress for stomach sleepers.

Combination Sleepers

Combination sleepers are known to toss and turn throughout the night, so responsiveness is a key quality to look for before purchasing a new mattress. The GhostBed Luxe is highly responsive, so much so that the foam layers almost resemble latex with their flexibility! This bed will move with you as you shift positions, so you’ll be well-supported no matter where you land.

If you’re a heavyweight or average-weight combination sleeper who spends time on your stomach, though, the Luxe might not give you ample support. Lightweight combination sleepers who spend time on their stomach throughout the night should be just fine on the Luxe.

GhostBed Luxe Mattress Performance

Is The GhostBed Luxe Mattress Cooling?

Traditional memory foam mattresses have a bad reputation for retaining heat and baking people as they sleep. GhostBed has leaned into the challenge of ensuring a cool night’s sleep by delivering a seven-layer mattress with cooling properties in all but the densest support layer at the bottom. Because of this, the GhostBed could be one of the best cooling mattresses.

So what are these special cooling features? The GhostBed Luxe cover is made of cooling fibers, quilted to enhance airflow. The cover is attached to some phase-change material that absorbs body heat and releases it when necessary. Underneath that are two layers of gel-infused foam and a patent-pending Ghost Ice foam layer.

All told, the Luxe is a phenomenal choice for hot sleepers who love the feeling of memory foam but are worried about heat retention.

Edge Support

As an all-foam mattress on the softer end of the medium-firm range, the GhostBed Luxe won’t do a great job of holding you up if you need to sit on the edge of the bed to tie your shoes or maneuver out of the bed in the morning. However, if you sleep with a partner and tend to stretch out across the entire surface of the mattress, you should feel secure and not at risk of falling off.

Responsiveness

Traditionally, we expect material like memory foam to sleep without much responsiveness, meaning it’s a bit more difficult to move around and switch positions on. But because the GhostBed Luxe uses a foam that has some qualities of latex, the result is a responsive mattress for combination sleepers and anyone who doesn’t want to feel stuck in their bed.

Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?

Couples or people who sleep with their children or pets should pay close attention to motion isolating properties in a mattress. Why? You want a mattress that will stop motion transfer from one side of the bed to the other, particularly when one or both partners are sound asleep.

Foam mattresses usually do an amazing job of this. The GhostBed Luxe does as well, so it’s a great mattress for couples. You won’t feel everything on the other side of the bed and should be able to rest easy.

Noise

As an all-foam mattress with no coils, the GhostBed Luxe will stay very quiet when you’re moving around on the mattress surface.

Pain Relief

The GhostBed Luxe has a medium firmness that borders on medium-soft, so it will do a great job of cushioning sensitive joints and pressure points for side and back sleepers. On the other hand, stomach sleepers need a firmer mattress to prevent spinal misalignment and lower back pain.

Sex

Even with memory foam layers, the GhostBed Luxe has a fair amount of responsiveness, thanks to buoyant foam layers. It’s not the best mattress for sex, but it should offer good mobility for the average couple.

Off-Gassing

During testing, we did notice a slight off-gassing odor coming from the GhostBed Luxe after unboxing. The odor is akin to a new car smell, and it should dissipate after a few hours or days. To speed up the process, make sure the mattress is stored in a well-ventilated room with lots of airflow.

Durability

We expect the GhostBed Luxe to keep its shape for at least seven years, which is typical for high-quality memory foam mattresses. After that point, you may notice body impressions forming in the foam layers. If the indentations surpass 1″, you can request a replacement mattress by making a warranty claim.

GhostBed Luxe Mattress Construction: What’s it made of?

The GhostBed Luxe is an all-foam mattress made with seven layers that are designed to keep the bed cool while you sleep. If you are looking for a firmer mattress or one with more bounce, see the best hybrid mattresses.

Layer #1—Cooling Cover: The fabric cover is woven with Ghost Ice Fabric, which is quilted to enhance airflow and features temperature regulating materials. It includes 1” of cooling fibers that carry heat away and 1” of gel memory foam that cradles your body’s curves to relieve pressure.

Layer #2—Ghost Ice Layer: The Ghost Ice layer incorporates phase-change materials that absorb excess heat to cool the mattress down or release it when necessary. That helps keep the mattress at a neutral temperature so you stay comfortable.

Layer #3—Gel Memory Foam: This 3” comfort layer does the bulk of the work cradling your body. Because the GhostBed Luxe mattress is slightly less firm than most medium-firm mattresses, it will curve closer to the body.

Layer #4—Ghost Bounce Layer: This 2” transition layer is a proprietary foam that’s meant to respond and bounce like latex but still conform to any curves. Old memory foam mattresses would contour like champions, but leave sleepers feeling swallowed. It was often hard for some people to get out of bed, but this layer helps the Luxe to be both supportive and responsive.

Layer #5—High-Density Support Layer: This 7.5” layer is made of high-density polyfoam. It should hold up everything above it without sinking or sagging, as well as increase the durability of the mattress.

GhostBed Policies

Shipping & Unboxing

GhostBed manufactures in the U.S. and promises to get your mattress to you within two to five business days. They ship via FedEx for free, unless you live in Alaska or Hawaii, which costs $600 for shipping.

Like most online mattress companies, the GhostBed Luxe is vacuum-compressed and rolled for bed-in-a-box delivery. You’ll likely need someone to help you wrangle it onto your foundation. Alternatively, you can pay $199 for white glove delivery (aka in-home setup) and old mattress removal.

Warranty

The GhostBed Luxe mattress is backed by a 25-year warranty. That falls between an industry-standard 10-year warranty and a Lifetime warranty. Keep in mind that mattresses should be replaced every seven to 10 years regardless of the warranty term. GhostBed will decide whether to repair or replace the mattress for free, minus shipping and handling costs.

The mattress cover is under warranty for one year from the date of purchase. Otherwise, for the first 10 years, the warranty covers sags or body impressions greater than 1” or any material flaw that causes the mattress to split.

From years 11–25, GhostBed will repair the mattress for the cost of shipping or replace it at a prorated price ranging from 50 percent of the original purchase price in year 11 to 55 percent of the original price in years 21–25.

If you don’t use the mattress on a solid base, box spring, or adjustable base, the warranty is void. The warranty doesn’t cover normal wear and tear or abuse by the owner. To read more about GhostBed’s Warranty read more info here

Trial Period & Returns

The GhostBed Luxe comes with a 101-night trial period, which is one day more than the industry standard of 100 nights. However, your trial period will start on the day the mattress is shipped and not on arrival day, which cuts down on the actual time you have to test your new mattress at home.

After 30 days, you can initiate a return with GhostBed if the mattress just doesn’t work for you. GhostBed will look to fix what is wrong or give you a refund, depending on the situation. Then they’ll either donate the mattress to charity or recycle it.

Note: Mattresses bought through third-party retailers like Amazon may have a different trial period and return policy.

Addressing GhostBed Mattress Complaints

Too Firm

Despite being billed as a medium-plush mattress, some GhostBed customers (mostly side sleepers) complain that the Luxe is too firm for comfort. Mattress comfort is subjective, so a bed that’s just right for one sleeper may be all wrong for another.

The only way to know for sure whether a mattress is right for you is to test it out. We recommend taking advantage of the GhostBed 101-night sleep trial and giving your body a full 30 days to adjust to the new sleeping surface. If it’s not the right fit, you can request a return or exchange during the trial period.

Not Cooling

We think the GhostBed Luxe stays remarkably cool for a memory foam mattress, but it does have an all-foam construction, and foam retains more heat than coils.

If you love the feel of memory foam and aren’t too worried about overheating, then the Luxe is a great choice. However, if your main concern when picking a new bed is temperature, it’s tough to beat the breathability of hybrid and innerspring mattresses.

The GhostBed Flex is a good alternative—it has the same cooling fibers and gel memory foam layers as the Luxe, but it has a coil base that allows for much more airflow than foam.

Comparing Different GhostBed Mattresses

GhostBed Luxe vs. Original GhostBed

GhostBed Luxe Mattress is Best For: Original GhostBed Mattress is Best For:
People Seeking A Medium-Firm Mattress Back & Stomach Sleepers
Side Sleepers Lightweight & Average-Weight Sleepers
Sleepers Who Toss & Turn All Night Shoppers Looking For A Softer Mattress

The GhostBed Classic has fewer inches of soft comfort foam than the GhostBed Luxe, which gives it a medium-firm feel, compared with the Luxe’s medium firmness. We recommend the Classic to back and stomach sleepers under 230 lbs, whereas the Luxe is better suited to side sleepers

The original GhostBed is also priced lower than the Luxe, so it’s a better choice for budget shoppers, but it has a slightly shorter warranty period—20 years instead of 25, which is still notably generous compared with the industry standard of 10 years.

Check out our GhostBed Mattress Review for more details.

GhostBed Luxe vs. GhostBed Flex

GhostBed Luxe Mattress is Best For: GhostBed Flex Mattress is Best For:
People Seeking A Medium-Firm Mattress Back & Side Sleepers
Side Sleepers Hot Sleepers
Sleepers Who Toss & Turn All Night Shoppers Looking For A Firmer, Springier Feel

The GhostBed Flex is a hybrid mattress made with gel memory foam and coils, while the GhostBed Luxe is an all-foam bed. As such, the Flex has a springier feel than the Luxe, and it’s also more breathable.

The Flex has a slightly firmer feel than the Luxe, but it’s still a good match for side sleepers over 130 lbs. We also recommend it to most back sleepers. As for pricing, the Flex is a little lower cost than the Luxe, but it has the same 25-year warranty.

GhostBed Luxe vs. GhostBed 3D Matrix

GhostBed Luxe Mattress is Best For: GhostBed 3D Matrix Mattress is Best For:
People Seeking A Medium-Firm Mattress Hot Sleepers
Side Sleepers Average-Weight Side Sleepers
Sleepers Who Toss & Turn All Night Back Sleepers

The GhostBed 3D Matrix and GhostBed Luxe compete for the title of most luxurious GhostBed mattress, but if you’re basing the label on price alone, the Matrix wins; it’s the most expensive GhostBed mattress. That’s due in part to the inclusion of a patented cooling material called 3D Matrix Polymer.

The Matrix is a hybrid mattress with a breathable, buoyant coil base layer. It shares the Ghost Ice fabric, gel memory foam, and Ghost Bounce layer with the Luxe, and it has a similar firmness level to the Luxe. GhostBed calls the Matrix a plush mattress, but we think it’s more medium-firm.

Comparing GhostBed to the Competition

GhostBed Luxe vs. Casper Wave Hybrid

GhostBed Luxe Mattress is Best For: Casper Wave Hybrid Mattress is Best For:
People Seeking A Medium-Firm Mattress Shoppers Looking For A Hybrid Mattress
Side Sleepers Sleepers Looking For Pressure Relief
Sleepers Who Toss & Turn All Night Back Sleepers

Similar to the GhostBed Luxe, the Casper Wave Hybrid is an upgraded version of its namesake mattress. Unlike the Luxe, the Wave is a hybrid mattress with coils. It uses gel-infused comfort foam like the Luxe, but it has perforated (hole punched) foam to improve airflow

The Wave has a similar firmness to the Luxe—both have a medium firmness with lots of pressure relief. They’re both excellent choices for side sleepers and hot sleepers. We favor the Wave for those with back pain because it has special zoned sections that improve spinal alignment.

Finally, the Wave costs several hundred dollars more than the Luxe, but it has only a 10-year warranty, compared with the Luxe’s 25-year warranty.

For the full scoop, read our Casper Wave Hybrid Mattress Review.

GhostBed Luxe vs. Saatva Classic

GhostBed Luxe Mattress is Best For: Saatva Classic Mattress is Best For:
People Seeking A Medium-Firm Mattress Back & Stomach Sleepers
Side Sleepers Sleepers With Back Pain
Sleepers Who Toss & Turn All Night Hot Sleepers

The GhostBed Luxe and Saatva Classic are both considered luxury mattresses, but the Saatva costs almost $1,000 less than the Luxe and comes with free white glove delivery and old mattress removal. It’s considered an innerspring mattress with a Euro pillow top.

The Saatva is offered in three firmness options—Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm—so it has a broader range of compatibility with different sleeping positions and body types. These mattresses are comparable in terms of comfort, but we favor the Saatva’s lower pricing and multiple firmness options.

For more information, read our Saatva Classic Mattress Review.

GhostBed Luxe vs. Purple Hybrid

GhostBed Luxe Mattress is Best For: Purple Hybrid Mattress is Best For:
People Seeking A Medium-Firm Mattress Hot Sleepers
Side Sleepers Back & Stomach Sleepers
Sleepers Who Toss & Turn All Night Shoppers Looking For A Firmer Mattress

The Purple Hybrid is a firmer, cooler mattress than the GhostBed Luxe. It has a coil base layer and Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple Grid comfort layer—both of which are naturally cooling.

With a 7/10 placement on the firmness scale, we recommend the Purple Hybrid to back and stomach sleepers, whereas the softer Luxe is better for side sleepers and those looking for lots of pressure relief.

Read our Purple Hybrid Mattress Review for more details.

GhostBed Mattress FAQs

Are GhostBed mattresses non-toxic?

Yes, GhostBed mattresses are non-toxic and CertiPUR-US certified for low emissions and no toxic chemicals. GhostBed mattresses are also fiberglass-free. You may notice some off-gassing after unpacking your new mattress, but it's not harmful and should be gone in a few hours/days in a well-ventilated room.

Is the GhostBed Luxe flippable?

No, the GhostBed Luxe mattress is one-sided so it's not flippable. However, it should be rotated head-to-foot a few times each year. This helps the mattress materials to break in more evenly, which can reduce the likelihood of bothersome body impressions, sagging, and foam indentations.

How much weight can the GhostBed Luxe support?

The GhostBed Luxe mattress can comfortably support up to 750 lbs combined. That equates to around 375 lbs per sleeper. With that said, we don't recommend all-foam beds or beds with a medium firmness to heavier people. Instead, folks over 230 lbs need a firm bed with coils.
