Ghostbed Luxe Mattress Review

GhostBed is yet another one of the latest direct-to-consumer, mattresses-in-a-box to hit the market. I was skeptical about this one at first until I realized that it is made by Nature’s Sleep, which is a respectable company that’s been around for 15 years. This was not just another marketing company trying to get in on the new mattress-in-a-box fad; it is an established mattress company taking advantage of the new distribution model.

The GhostBed Luxe is the second mattress under the GhostBed brand produced by Nature’s Sleep, which has been in the mattress business for 15 years, trying to make affordable, quality units that are environmentally sound.

The GhostBed Luxe mattress was built, first and foremost, to make sure you don’t sweat while you sleep. By the way, the founder of GhostBed named it thusly because he was afraid of ghosts under the bed as a child.

Traditional memory foam mattresses had a bad reputation for retaining heat and baking people as they slept. With nearly 30 years and many iterations removed from that original offering in the industry. GhostBed has leaned into the challenge of ensuring a cool night’s sleep by delivering a 7-layer mattress with cooling elements in all but the most dense support layer at the bottom.

The cooling fibers and quilting in the top-most fabric and phase-change material and gel-infused foam in the other layers do all the heavy lifting here in terms of keeping sleepers cool enough to fall asleep. But the GhostBed Luxe doesn’t skimp on the foam either. The memory foam will also deliver the comfort and contouring most sleepers need to keep their spines aligned.

Consider these features when you’re looking at the memory foam GhostBed Luxe mattress:

  • Trademark motto: “Sleep Sweat Free on the Coolest Bed in the World”
  • Cooling fibers, phase-change material and gel-infused foam work together to keep the sleeper cool
  • Transition layer made of proprietary foam that has bounce to it
  • Slightly less firm than medium-firm
  • Great for side sleepers who need the mattress to conform to the body
  • 101-night trial period
  • 25-year limited warranty
  • Made in the USA

The GhostBed Luxe is an all-foam mattress made with seven layers of material that are designed to keep the bed cool while you sleep.

GhostBed considered body temperature, heat retention and available cooling properties for every single layer of this luxury, more upscale version of its original mattress. The GhostBed Luxe cover is made of cooling fibers, quilted to enhance air flow. The cover is attached to some phase-change material that absorbs heat and releases it when necessary. Underneath that there are two layers of gel-infused foam. The gel absorbs heat as well.

The GhostBed Luxe is slightly softer than a medium-firm mattress. Medium firm is considered the standard firmness to cover a wide range of tastes. So the GhostBed Luxe will sink and cradle bodies a bit more at the top layers. If you’re a heavier person, you may put too much pressure on the mattress for it to keep your spine aligned properly.

Edge support

This all-foam mattress is on the softer end of medium firm, so GhostBed Luxe also won’t necessarily do a great job holding you up if you need to sit on the edge of the bed. It may be OK if you sleep with a partner and need to use the entire mattress surface. That’s the more important consideration (using the entire mattress) when you talk about edge support.

Motion transfer

Couples or people who sleep with their children or pets should pay close attention to how well a mattress stops motion from traveling from one side of the bed, where your partner is getting out or shifting around, to the other side of the bed, where you’re sound asleep. Foam mattresses usually do an amazing job of this. The GhostBed Luxe does as well. You won’t feel everything going on on the other side of the bed and should be able to rest easy.

The GhostBed Luxe is made of seven layers that work to make sure you sleep at a comfortable temperature and within a comfortable framework.

There are three elements working together in the first three layers that measure about 1 1/2 inches thick total.

The fabric cover in the first layer is woven with cooling fibers and quilted to enhance air flow. The second layer is a 1/2-inch of cooling fiber that will also carry heat away. Then there is 1 inch of gel memory foam quilted into the fabric above. This is the start of the comfort layer; the memory foam here begins absorbing your body curves to relieve pressure.

The fourth layer is a layer of phase-change material absorbs excessive heat to cool the mattress down or release it when necessary. That helps keep the mattress at a neutral temperature so you stay comfortable.

The comfort layer continues in layer 5, which is another 2 inches of gel memory foam. This layer will do the bulk of the work cradling your body. Because this mattress is slightly less firm than medium firm, you must pay closer attention to how well it curves to the body while still keeping the spine aligned.

The transition layer begins in layer 6. This 2-inch slab is a proprietary foam that has more bounce to it, a layer that is both supportive and resilient. Old memory foam mattresses would contour like champions, but still, leave sleepers feeling swallowed. It was often hard for some people to get out of bed.

In other words, thanks to layer 6, you’ll be able to bounce out of the bed without sinking. It’s meant to respond/bounce like latex but still conform to any curves (shoulders, hips, thighs for side sleepers; back and butt for back sleepers) as all good memory foam does.

Layer 7 is the densest foam of the entire mattress. This 7 1/2-inch layer will hold up everything above it and should increase the durability of the mattress.

Here is a breakdown of the GhostBed Luxe mattress:

  • Twin XL: 38” x 80”
  • Full: 54” x 75”
  • Queen: 60” x 80”
  • King: 76” x 80”
  • Cal King: 72” x 84”

122 pounds for a queen size

The GhostBed Luxe comes with a 101-night trial period. That amount of time sounds amazing. And while it is longer than the industry standard, it’s a longer term than industry standard by only 24 hours. Also, your trial period will start on the day the mattress is shipped, before you get a chance to sleep in it, and not on arrival day.

After 30 days and before 101 days, you can initiate a return with GhostBed if the mattress just doesn’t work for you. GhostBed will look to fix what is wrong or give you a refund, depending on the situation. GhostBed will not take the mattress back or donate it to charity if you return it.

The GhostBed Luxe mattress is backed by a 25-year limited warranty. That falls between an industry-standard 10-year warranty and lifetime warranties. Mattresses should be replaced every 7 to 10 years regardless of the warranty term. Keep that in mind. Also, GhostBed will decide whether the mattress can be repaired or should be replaced, minus shipping and handling costs.

For the first 10 years, the limited warranty covers sags or body impressions greater than 1 inch or any material flaw that causes the mattress to split. If you don’t use the mattress on a solid base, boxspring or adjustable base, the warranty is void. The warranty doesn’t cover normal wear and tear or abuse by the owner.

From years 11 through 25, GhostBed may repair the mattress minus the shipping costs, or replace it at a prorated price ranging from 50 percent of the original purchase price in year 11 to 55 percent of the original price in years 21-25.

Delivery & Setup

GhostBed manufactures in the U.S. and promises to get your mattress en route to you within 24 hours. It will arrive within 3-5 business days. GhostBed does ship via FedEx for free, unless you live in Alaska and Hawaii. Shipping to either state costs $600 and sales to residents in either place are final. No returns for Alaskans or Hawaiians. Also, GhostBed will not take away your old mattress.

The GhostBed Luxe is delivered vacuum-compressed and rolled in a box. You will likely need someone to help you handle it. The additional materials meant to enhance the mattress’s cooling properties also add weight to the mattress. The twin weighs in at 76 pounds, the queen 122 and the King 150. Be wary when setting it up. It comes in a box, but you’ll need someone to help you wrangle it onto your foundation.

Customer service

The customer service folks behind GhostBed will field your calls or chat with you during regular business hours 7 days per week. You can email them as well.

GhostBed will work with consumers to find the right solution if the Luxe doesn’t quite meet someone’s expectations. They reserve the right to offer an alternative, repair any accepted defects listed in the warranty, replace it or refund your price if you “return” the mattress.

“Return” is written in parenthesis because you will be responsible for getting rid of the mattress. GhostBed won’t reclaim the actual mattress but refund your payment.

GhostBed Luxe won’t turn your body heat against you while you sleep. The company put too much time and material into making sure this new version of its popular first offering would easily keep you cool during slumber.

The GhostBed Luxe was built to appeal to all sleepers. That’s such a hard thing to do, especially since the bed leans toward the softer side of medium-firm. However, side sleepers can literally rest easy. The layers meant to contour and cradle their shoulders, hips, and thighs will do that and keep their spines aligned in the process.

You do have a long period of time where GhostBed will look after your bed thanks to a 25-year warranty. After 10 years, it turns into a prorated arrangement if the mattress has to be replaced.

Be warned: All sizes start over $1,000.  But, if you’re a side sleeper who likes the feel of memory foam, but often wakes up because you’re too hot, the GhostBed Luxe may be your mattress.
