New Purple Mattress Review

There are a lot of mattresses out there with a lot of very similar features.  The Purple stands out.  With some very unique technology, you’re going to like this one.

Nerd Score: 4.8/5

The company behind the Purple mattress is attempting to improve on online, direct-to-consumer trends by making quality, premium mattress that costs what a quality, a premium mattress should cost.

The New Purple is a hybrid mattress that comes is three options for firmness.  The softest is the .4 and the most firm is the .2), all equally as “sciency” as the company says. That’s their way of saying they’ve put some thought and effort into solving problems like overheating and pressure relief.

The hybrid does have supportive and responsive innerspring coils, but the innovation behind the Purple sits with their customizable support system. They have developed a system that can give you three different firmness levels. Your choice.

The goal? To give you the sleep of your dreams.

Here are some features of the New Purple mattress:

The Puffy is a hybrid mattress of hyper-elastic polymer, coil and foam.

All levels promote natural airflow.

Purple Mattress Firmness

Using Purple’s Smart Comfort Grid system, you can choose a firmness level that works for you.

The “firm” comfort grid is 2 inches thick. Great for back sleepers.

The “medium” comfort grid is 3 inches thick and a balance of soft and firm. Great for couples with different firmness needs.

The “soft” comfort grid is 4 inches thick. Very soft. Gives a “zero-gravity” feel for people who love feeling hugged and cradled by their mattresses.

Edge support

You want the full surface of any mattress to support you, especially if you’re sleeping with a partner and are forced to sleep close to the edge. The Purple manages this without issue. It seems to offer even support from side to side.

Motion transfer

Foam mattresses normally don’t do a great job at limiting the amount of movement that one sleeper feels when the other shifts around or gets out of bed. Basically, you don’t want to be jostled awake. Limiting motion transfer is super important in the mattress world.

As a hybrid with coils, Purple .4 does limit movement transferring from one partner to the other. The coils are wrapped individually and practically soundless, which helps the whole process.

The New Purple mattress is made of two basic layers that deliver more than two layers have a right to deliver.

The fabric cover is a soft, stretchable knit that flexes around the comfort gird to make it comfortable and breathable to sleep on. There are also quilted side panels made of a mesh material that supports and encourages air to flow through for more cooling.

The first layer is the support grid made of hyper-elastic polymer. The adaptability of the material means it will relieve pressure on your body curves and align your spine in any sleep position. It flexes and supports. This layer is also temperature neutral because the open design is an airflow dream. You can personalize the firmness of your mattress because the comfort grid comes in three thicknesses—2 inches, 3 inches or 4 inches.

There is a thinner second layer of support form a durable poly foam. It eases the body from the support grid to the coils below.

The third layer is made up of the responsive support coils. Normally, coils do a great job conforming to your body to eliminate pressure points. The 7.5-inch layer gives the mattress some bounce. The coils are individually wrapped in fabric. So not only are they relieving pressure, they’re practically soundless in action.

Purple Mattress Warranty

The Purple has a 10-year limited warranty to replace the mattress if something is wrong with it.

Of course, it only applies to the original owner and to material and workmanship defects that have nothing to do with abuse or wear and tear. It will cover unexplained indentations of at least 1 inch and splits or cracks in the materials. Again, no abuse or the warranty is void.

You do have to use the proper base and foundation for the warranty to stay in effect.

Purple advises you not to use a box spring under your mattress. It might hasten the mattress breaking down. Most firm, flat surfaces will do just fine.

While Purple on the surface may seem like a fairly common direct-to-consumer mattress offering, it does have a special feature that makes it both unique and worth the price.

The Smart Comfort Grid allows you to choose the firmness level. Coupled with a base on innerspring, individually encased coils and you have a mattress able to adapt to your body and give you the best chance at a comfortable night of rest.

The Purple  is good if you need both pressure relief and support because it does a good job at distributing weight. It also is good for people worried about bathing in the own sweat in an overheated mattress. The grid structure on top creates air pockets and encourages flow so you feel cool. It’s a good choice for side sleepers.
