Puffy vs. TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid: Firmness & Feel Differences

In this section, we’ll go into detail on how the Puffy and TEMPUR-Cloud mattresses differ in terms of firmness and feel.

What’s the Firmness Of the Puffy & TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid Mattresses?

Mattresses come in different firmness levels, and if you want to get the best sleeping experience, you’ll want to look for a mattress that fits your sleeping position and body type.

At Mattress Nerd, we use a 1 to 10 mattress firmness scale to measure, with 1 being as soft as a cloud and 10 being as firm as a wooden plank. We gave the original Puffy a score of 5.5/10, which puts it in the true neutral level. Meanwhile, we have the TEMPUR-Cloud a 6/10, which makes it a medium-firm mattress.

What Do the Puffy & TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid Mattresses Feel Like?

The original Puffy mattress has a balanced foam feel that provides a good combination of support and responsiveness. This means that you likely won’t find yourself sinking too much into the foam layers. We also found it very easy to move around on, so combination sleepers who toss and turn a lot will appreciate it.

The TEMPUR-Cloud has that truly hybrid feel that balances the soft, hugging feel of memory foam and the supportive lift of the coil base. Compared to the Puffy, however, the Puffy has a deeper, more contouring feel while the TEMPUR-Cloud feels more like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress.

What’s It Like to Sleep On the Puffy & TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid Mattresses?

After trying out both mattresses, here’s what we determined: Generally, we recommend Puffy for lightweight sleepers and the TEMPUR-Cloud for average-weight sleepers. They aren’t well suited for heavyweight sleepers, though. Neither mattress provides good support for folks that weigh more than 230 lbs.

As for sleeping positions, we think that Puffy excels for side sleepers prioritizing pressure relief, while the firmer TEMPUR-Cloud better accommodates back and stomach sleepers who want great back and hip support.

The Puffy vs. TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid Mattresses By Body Type

Puffy Performance By Body Type & Sleeping Position:

Lightweight (< 130 lbs): 4
Average-weight (130–230 lbs):434
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): 223

Body Type:BACK SLEEPERSSTOMACH SLEEPERSSIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): 5
Average-weight (130–230 lbs):3
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): 3

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Average-Weight Sleepers (130–230 lbs)

Average-weight back sleepers will get enough back support from both the original Puffy and TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid, but we think the latter will provide better comfort because of its support coil base. Side sleepers will also have a good night’s sleep on both mattresses, but the plusher Puffy mattress will probably be better at cradling pressure points and relieving tension.

On the other hand, we think that the firmer and more supportive TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid will be a better fit for stomach sleepers, but some may still feel like they need something firmer. Combination sleepers will sleep well on both mattresses since they’re both very responsive, but the Puffy gets a slight upper hand because of its springy coils.

Heavyweight Sleepers (> 230 lbs)

Heavyweight back sleepers will sleep better on the TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid compared to the original Puffy, but we think the majority will still feel like they sink too much. The same goes for heavier stomach, side, and combination sleepers. We recommend firmer and more supportive mattresses like the ones in our list of the best mattresses for heavy people.

Lightweight Sleepers (< 130 lbs)

Lightweight back sleepers will probably find both the Puffy and TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid to be excellent mattress choices, but we’d have to give the firmer TEMPUR-Cloud the better score here. Side sleepers, on the other hand, need extra cushion for their hips and shoulders, so the softer Puffy mattress is the better pick.

Stomach sleepers need extra support for their hips and fortunately, the TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid provides more than enough. For combination sleepers, both mattresses should suffice in terms of comfort and support.

Differences In Mattress Construction

The original Puffy is an all-foam mattress, while the TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid has a hybrid construction. Both mattresses stand 10” tall. Here’s a closer look at their mattress construction.

Puffy vs. TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid Mattress Performance Ratings & Differences

Temperature

If you’re a hot sleeper, you’ll want a mattress that prioritizes cooling so that you’ll have a night of uninterrupted sleep.

All-foam mattresses aren’t usually a good match for hot sleepers, but the original Puffy mattress counters this by having a cooling gel-infused foam top layer. At the very least, this layer will help keep a temperature-neutral feel all night. On the other hand, the TEMPUR-Cloud is a great choice for hot sleepers because of its coil layer that allows air to pass through and provides great breathability and ventilation.

Motion Transfer

If you share a bed with a partner or pet, you’ve probably experienced being woken up because of their movements at night. To prevent that, you’d need a mattress with low motion transfer.

Foam mattresses, like the original Puffy, tend to have adequate motion isolation, so you shouldn’t have to worry about suddenly being woken up. Similarly, the TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid also has thick foam layers that help minimize motion transfer, making it a good option for couples or co-sleepers.

Edge Support

Edge support is your mattress’s ability to hold up against weight on its sides. It’s an important factor to consider when shopping for a mattress, especially if you want to maximize your mattress space or need extra help getting in and out of bed.

We think the Puffy provides decent edge support, though we did notice some sagging when we sat on its edges. Still, we didn’t feel like we were going to fall off when we slept on its side. The same can be said for the TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid since we also noticed some sinking. Overall, if you’re looking for a mattress with great edge support, we think there are better mattress options out there.

Pressure Relief

A mattress has good pressure relief if it does a good job of evenly distributing body weight and relieving tension off your pressure points. That said, we performed pressure maps on both mattresses to determine whether there was pressure build-up when sleeping on them.

Results from our sleep lab showed that the Puffy had some pressure build-up around the shoulder and hips when we slept on our sides and a bit of pressure on the lower back when we lie down on our back. On the other hand, the TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid performed better than the Puffy since we only saw minimal pressure build-up in the previously mentioned areas.

Pain Relief

Sleepers who suffer from pains and aches in certain parts of their body will want to find a mattress that will help relieve pain and prevent the pain from getting worse.

We think the Puffy mattress could provide good pain relief for sleepers under 230 lbs, especially those who sleep on their side. Back and stomach sleepers looking for extra hip and lumbar support are better off with the firmer TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid.

Durability

A mattress is a financial and physical investment, so it’s natural for you to look for a mattress that will give you value for your money.

Like most foam mattresses, you can expect your Puffy to last you 6 to 7 years. Hybrid mattresses are usually more durable, so we predict that the TEMPUR-Cloud will last you a longer 8 to 10 years.

Fortunately, both mattresses have long warranties with the Puffy having a Lifetime warranty and the TEMPUR-Cloud having a 10-year warranty.

Our Final Take

Overall, the original Puffy and TEMPUR-Cloud Hybrid mattresses are great mattress choices, but they each have specific features that make them the best choice for certain sleepers.

If you’re a strict side sleeper or someone who prefers the classic hugging feel of memory foam, you’ll be happy sleeping on the Puffy mattress. However, if you’re a back or stomach sleeper who’s looking for a supportive mattress, the TEMPUR-Cloud should have your back. And if you’re a hot sleeper who wants a cooler night’s sleep, you will be happy choosing either mattress.

Puffy & TEMPUR-Cloud FAQs

Do You Flip a Puffy Mattress?

No. It’s not recommended that you flip Puffy mattresses because their layers are designed in a specific order. Flipping it over will have a drastic effect on the intended comfort and support. Although, you can rotate the mattress if you want. We recommend rotating it every 3 to 6 months.

Is the TEMPUR-Cloud good for back pain?

Yes, the TEMPUR-Cloud provides excellent pain relief for those dealing with back pain, thanks to its medium-firmness, soft yet supportive foam layers, and springy coil base. It also does a good job of relieving tension off pressure points on the back to prevent any pains and aches from developing.

Why shouldn’t you buy a Puffy mattress?

Although the original Puffy mattress is a great mattress in general, it’s not a good match for certain types of sleepers. If you’re on the heavier side or a strict stomach sleeper, Puffy will probably feel too soft and won’t be able to provide the right amount of support.
