Who is the Zenhaven Mattress Best For?

Who’s Going to Love the Zenhaven

  • Hot sleepers
  • All sleeping positions
  • People who toss and turn at night
  • Eco-conscious consumers

Who Should Steer Clear of the Zenhaven

  • Those who like the contouring feel of memory foam—instead, consider the Loom & Leaf mattress, which is topped with two memory foam layers.
  • Lightweight side sleepers—instead, go with a softer memory foam mattress, like the Nectar.
  • Heavyweight stomach sleepers—instead, consider the Big Fig mattress or any of the beds in our best mattresses for heavy people roundup.

Zenhaven Firmness & Feel

Zenhaven Firmness

The Zenhaven comes with two firmness levels in one mattress: a Luxury Plush side and a Gentle Firm side. The Luxury Plush side falls around 5/10 on our 1–10 firmness scale (with 10 being tabletop firm). That means the softer side of the Zenhaven has a medium firmness, which usually works well for side or back sleepers.

The Gentle Firm side is closer to 7.5/10 on the scale. This firmness level will appeal the most to heavy back sleepers or stomach sleepers. It’s also the better option for anyone whose doctor told them to get a firmer mattress for spinal support.

What Does the Zenhaven Feel Like?

Both sides of the Zenhaven feel firmer and more supportive than your typical all-foam mattress. That’s because latex is naturally buoyant, so it takes more effort to compress it than, say, a pillow top or soft memory foam mattress. You’ll feel more “on top” of this mattress than hugged by it. It also stays temperature neutral, though not cool-to-the-touch.

What Sleeping Position Is the ZenhavenBest For?

Body Type Back Sleepers Stomach Sleepers Side Sleepers
Lightweight < 130 lbs: 5 5 3
Average-weight 130–230 lbs: 5 5 4
Heavyweight > 230 lbs: 4 2 4

1 = Very poor     2 = Not good     3 = Fair     4 = Good     5 = Excellent

Back Sleepers

The majority of back sleepers will be comfortable on either side of the Zenhaven. Some heavier sleepers may experience unwanted lower back sinkage on the softer side, but other than that, it’s mostly your preference which side you use. For other beds that support the spine, see our list of the best mattresses for back sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers

I’m average-weight, and when I laid down on my stomach on the Gentle Plush side, I felt my hips sinking a little bit. As such, I would recommend that strict stomach sleepers stick with the Firm side. When your hips stay lifted on top of the mattress, it keeps your spine aligned, which is important for avoiding lower back pain.

If you’re a heavier person, you may experience too much sinkage on either side of the mattress. You can find some good alternatives by checking out the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

Side Sleepers

The Luxury Plush side of the Zenhaven is a good option for average-weight side sleepers. Heavier side sleepers may notice some pressure buildup on the Gentle Firm side, but may not get enough support on the Luxury Plush side in this sleeping position. These folks should go with whichever side does the best job of balancing pressure point cushioning with spinal support.

Neither side of the mattress does a great job of relieving pressure for lightweight side sleepers. For better options, see our top picks for the best mattresses for side sleepers.

Combination Sleepers

As always with combination sleepers, think about what position you spend most of the night in and read up on how the Zenhaven suits that position. I found this mattress was relatively easy to move around on, but would not want to be sleeping next to someone who was moving around a lot.

If you need a responsive mattress that makes changing positions easier, see the best mattress for combination sleepers.

Zenhaven Mattress Performance

Is the Zenhaven Mattress Cooling?

Latex is a temperature-neutral material because it doesn’t absorb body heat like memory foam. The top two layers of latex are perforated, which noticeably improves airflow through the mattress. The Zenhaven isn’t likely to overheat, so it’s a good option for hot sleepers; however, it doesn’t have the breathability of a mattress with coils, so we don’t include it among the best cooling mattresses.

Edge Support

The Zenhaven has decent edge support on the Luxury Plush side and above-average support on the Gentle Firm side. We test edge support by sitting and lying along the edges of the bed. Deep sinkage equates to poor edge support. Fortunately, we felt well-supported along the sides of the Zenhaven.

Responsiveness

Latex foam is a springy material, which means it quickly adapts to your movements. In contrast, memory foam typically takes much longer to react, so some sleepers complain of feeling stuck in one place. That won’t be an issue on the Zenhaven: it’s a highly responsive mattress and great for those who change positions a lot at night.

Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?

As a latex mattress, we weren’t surprised to see that the Zenhaven registers a lot of movement. That’s because latex is naturally buoyant and responsive, rather than slow-moving and motion-absorbing.  This lack of motion isolation could pose a problem if you sleep with a partner and have different work schedules. You may wake someone up or get woken up because you can feel quite a bit when the other side gets jostled.

If you sleep with a partner who tends to move around a lot, this may not be the best option. If motion isolation is important to you, see the best mattress for couples.

Noise

We didn’t notice any noise coming from the Zenhaven (ex: squeaky coils).

Pain Relief

Latex mattresses are generally great for back pain, since they’re supportive enough to keep most sleepers’ spines aligned. The one exception is heavyweight stomach sleepers, who may notice their hips dipping out of a neutral alignment. If you notice your hips sinking below your shoulders when lying on your belly, you need a firmer mattress to avoid lower back pain.

Those with joint pain should get some nice relief on the Relaxed Firm side of the bed. However, if you weigh less than 130 lbs, sleep on your side, and struggle with shoulder or hip pain, you’ll want an even softer mattress. For better options, see the best soft mattresses and the best mattresses for back pain.

Sex

When shopping for a good mattress for sex, consider temperature regulation, responsiveness, and noise. The Zenhaven scored well in all of those categories, so we consider it to be a great option for intimate activity.

Off-Gassing

You know how new cars have a “new car smell”? The same is true for mattresses, especially bed-in-a-box foam mattresses. That’s because foam produces more of an odor than other materials, and sometimes those odors get trapped when the mattress is compressed and rolled for shipping.

Since the Zenhaven is made with latex and is delivered full-size, it doesn’t have the typical “new mattress smell.” If you do notice an odor, it’s temporary and non-toxic.

Durability

Latex is one of the most durable mattress materials available. It doesn’t form body impressions as easily as memory foam or polyfoam. As such, the Zenhaven should last you a least 10 years, if used properly. Also, Saatva backs the Zenhaven with a Lifetime warranty.

Zenhaven Mattress Construction: What’s It Made Of?

The Zenhaven mattress is made entirely of natural latex—from top to bottom—minus the organic cotton cover and organic wool flame retardant.

Layer #1—Organic Cotton Cover: The entire mattress is covered in a quilted organic cotton fabric. Whichever side you use, the organic cotton cover will sit next to the skin.

Layer #2—Organic Wool Padding: A layer of organic wool sits under the cover on both sides of the mattress. This layer adds extra cushioning and acts as a natural flame retardant.

Layer #3—Latex Comfort Layer: The top layer, for both the Luxury Plush and Gentle Firm sides, is made of perforated Talalay latex with five zones of support. Each zone has a different firmness level (ex: softer latex under your shoulders), which helps to keep your spine aligned.

Layer #4–5–Latex Support Layers: The core of the mattress is also made of Talalay latex that’s firmer for extra support.

Layer #6—Latex Comfort Layer: The other side of the mattress is made of Talalay latex with a different firmness level than the opposite side.

Addressing Zenhaven Mattress Complaints

Shoulder & Hip Pain

A couple of reviewers mentioned developing shoulder and hip pain while sleeping on the Zenhaven mattress. They didn’t specify which side they were sleeping on. If you aren’t getting enough pressure relief on the Gentle Firm side, try switching to the Luxury Plush side. If that side isn’t soft enough, you may want to return or exchange the Zenhaven during the trial period.

Delayed Delivery

A few customers complained about a delayed or confusing delivery process. Since Saatva offers free white glove delivery, the delivery and set-up process involves a third-party, as opposed to bed-in-a-box delivery where you bring in and set up your mattress. A bad delivery experience is the exception, rather than the rule, and complaints like these plague all online mattress companies. If you’re experiencing an issue with delivery, reach out to the Saatva customer care team, which is available online 24/7.

Comparing Different Saatva Mattresses

Zenhaven vs. Saatva Classic

The Saatva Classic is Saatva’s flagship mattress. It’s made with a foam pillow top, two layers of coils, an extra lumbar support pad, and an organic cotton cover. While the Zenhaven is flippable, the Saatva Classic is one-sided and offered in three firmness options: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm.

Both mattresses stay pretty cool, or at least temperature neutral. The Zenhaven feels denser and less bouncy than the Saatva. The Saatva will feel like a more traditional mattress, with a combination of bounce and cushioning. The Zenhaven is more expensive, but both come with free white glove delivery and a 365-night trial period.

See our full Saatva Classic Mattress Review for more information.

Zenhaven vs. Saatva Latex Hybrid

The Saatva Latex Hybrid mattress is very similar to the Zenhaven, though it has a core of coils and it’s one-sided. The Latex Hybrid shares the firmness of the firmer side of the Zenhaven, so it’s best for back and stomach sleepers. The Zenhaven’s softer side better suit side sleepers.

If you like a firm mattress and want the added bounce and breathability of coils, go with the Latex Hybrid. If you want two firmness options and don’t mind the denser feel of an all-latex mattress, go with the Zenhaven. Pricewise, the Latex Hybrid is more affordable by around $600, but it has a shorter warranty—15 years compared with Zenhaven’s 20-year warranty.

This mattress is no longer available for purchase. To help you find your next mattress, check out our list of the best mattresses available on the market now.

See our full Saatva Latex Hybrid Mattress Review to learn more.

Zenhaven vs. Loom & Leaf

The Loom & Leaf is Saatva’s memory foam mattress. It’s made with two layers of contouring memory foam, supportive polyfoam, and an organic cotton cover. It also has an extra lumbar support pad beneath the sleeper’s hips and lower back.

The Loom & Leaf isn’t flippable, but it’s offered in two firmness levels that are a little firmer than the Zenhaven’s firmnesses: the Relaxed Firm option is around 6/10 on the firmness scale, which works for back sleepers under 230 lbs and side sleepers over 230 lbs; the Firm option is 8/10, which is better for stomach sleepers and heavier back sleepers.

Go with the Loom & Leaf if you like the conforming feel of memory foam and are on a tighter budget. Choose the Zenhaven if you want an all-natural mattress, prefer the buoyancy and temperature-neutrality of latex, and are willing to spend more.

This mattress is no longer available for purchase. To help you find your next mattress, check out our list of the best mattresses available on the market now.

Comparing Zenhaven to the Competition

Zenhaven vs. Avocado Green

The Avocado Green is an organic latex mattress with support coils instead of a latex support core. It’s bouncier and firmer than the Zenhaven. It also comes in only one firmness level, though you can pay extra to add a soft latex pillow top.

Choose the Avocado if you’re on a budget (it’s lower cost), don’t need a ton of pressure relief, and want the bounce and breathability of coils. Go with the Zenhaven if you’re willing to pay more for an all-latex mattress and want multiple firmness options, including one that’s softer and more pressure-relieving.

This mattress is no longer available for purchase. To help you find your next mattress, check out our list of the best mattresses available on the market now.

See our full Avocado Green Mattress Review for more information.

Zenhaven vs. GhostBed

The GhostBed is made with synthetic latex, memory foam, and high-density base foam. Synthetic latex is made in a lab, whereas natural latex is derived from rubber trees. If you’re looking for a natural mattress, the Zenhaven is the obvious choice. It’s also better for those who want multiple firmness options and are willing to pay more for a more durable bed.

The GhostBed is a great latex “starter bed.” It has the buoyancy and support of latex, plus the more familiar feel of latex and polyfoam. It probably won’t sleep as cool as the Zenhaven, but it won’t retain as much heat as the typical all-foam mattress.

This mattress is no longer available for purchase. To help you find your next mattress, check out our list of the best mattresses available on the market now.

See our full GhostBed Mattress Review for more information.

Zenhaven vs. WinkBeds EcoCloud

The WinkBeds EcoCloud is a latex hybrid mattress, so it stacks a cushioning layer of latex over coils. The feel is initially similar to the Zenhaven, though it’s springier and more breathable. We gave the EcoCloud a 6/10 (medium-firm) firmness rating, and it’s best for back or stomach sleepers under 230 lbs, though heavier side sleepers may experience decent cushioning as they sink deeper into the latex comfort layer.

The Zenhaven is generally the better choice for those who need pressure relief, especially side sleepers. It’s pricier than the EcoCloud, but the dual-sided construction may be worth it for some shoppers. With have a Lifetime warranty, but it has only a 120-night trial period, which is much shorter than Zenhaven’s 365-night sleep trial.

This mattress is no longer available for purchase. To help you find your next mattress, check out our list of the best mattresses available on the market now.

FAQs

Is the Zenhaven worth it?

The Zenhaven is worth the cost for those who want an all-natural latex mattress with firmness options. It''''s ideal for side sleepers over 230 lbs, back sleepers of any body type, and stomach sleepers under 230 lbs. It''''s not the best choice for lightweight side sleepers or heavier stomach sleepers.

What''''s the difference between Talalay and Dunlop latex?

Talalay latex and Dunlop latex are both made from rubber trees, though they''''re processed differently, which gives them different feels. Generally, Dunlop latex is firmer, so it''''s often used as a base layer in latex mattresses. Talalay latex is softer, so it''''s typically used as a comfort layer.

The Nerd’s Take: What’s the Bottom Line?

The Zenhaven is a luxury latex mattress that’s made with natural Talalay latex, organic cotton, and organic wool. You’ll pay more for these quality materials, but can expect 20 years of life in return, not to mention that you’re essentially getting two mattress in one: one medium-soft and one medium-firm.

The responsive feel and two firmness levels can work for all sleeping positions and body types, but they’re best for back sleepers, stomach sleepers under 230 lbs, and side sleepers who don’t have sensitive shoulders or hips. Budget shoppers, lightweight side sleepers, and heavier stomach sleeper should steer clear.
