Molecule is a U.S.-based mattress manufacturer that claims to use sleep science in order to engineer its mattresses to “maximize support, comfort, and heat dissipation for the best recovery-focused sleep” for serious athletes and regular recreational exercisers. If visiting a Costco warehouse store in-person sounds tedious or overwhelming to you, you have alternative options. Thanks to the Internet, mattress shopping is easier than ever. A wide variety of online-only mattress retailers have sprung up in the last two decades, and many brick-and-mortar stores, including Costco, now have websites on which most of the mattresses they carry are available.
Here’s a list of some of the best online mattress shopping alternatives if you don’t want to visit a Costco store or don’t have a Costco location nearby.
- Costco.com—Costco carries 20 mattress brands on its website in hundreds of styles. You’ll find everything from small beds for children to luxury Split Kings.
- Casper—Casper is among the first in the new generation of mattress makers who sell their products primarily online. Casper mattresses, made with CertiPUR-US certified foams, are also available on Target.com.
- Wayfair—This third-party furniture and home goods website has a wide variety of mattresses sourced from their more than 11,000 global suppliers. If you’re looking for a one-stop-shop, you can find your box spring or bed frame, mattress, bedding, and pillows on Wayfair.com.
- Brooklyn Bedding—An American manufacturer, Brooklyn Bedding is a trend-setting, direct-to-consumer mattress company with mattresses in multiple firmness options.
- Tuft & Needle—Tuft & Needle launched in 2012 and offers only two mattress models that they claim to have perfected. Shipping is free and each comes with a 100-night trial and free refund and removal.
- Purple—Purple is an innovative mattress company that uses a Purple Grid comfort layer, a proprietary material that conforms to the body and sleeps cool, to set itself apart. This is considered a high-value mattress pick by critics. Purple mattresses are a great choice for couples due to their excellent motion isolation.
These suggestions just skim the top of the online mattress shopping options available to you. Other retailers to check out include Saatva, Avocado Green, Allswell Home, and Helix.
Pro and Cons of Buying In-Store vs. Online
In-Store
PROS:
- You’ll have the opportunity to touch, feel, and see mattresses in-person
- Mattress stores have a wide variety of styles, sizes, firmness levels, and support levels, which can be helpful to see if you haven’t purchased a mattress in the past
- Most retail mattress stores include mattress removal with your mattress delivery
- You can determine whether or not mattresses you’re considering will encourage your spinal alignment, a crucial element of sleep health that’s nearly impossible to determine when online shopping
CONS:
- Mattress store prices tend to be more expensive than their online alternatives
- Shady salespeople sometimes have their own interests (commission) in mind and may push you towards expensive models and unnecessary accessories
- Some mattress brands sold online, like Leesa and Purple, aren’t available in stores
Online
PROS:
- Quickly comparison shop between brands, sizes, and styles
- Bypass potentially pushy customer service representatives and salespeople
- Better prices can usually be found thanks to the elimination of overhead fees, discounts, and promotional codes
- Shipping, return, and night trial policies are generous
- The most convenient, quick way to shop for a new mattress
CONS:
- You won’t have a salesperson or mattress representative to answer your questions and guide your selection
- You’ll need to visit a Costco or another mattress retail store to feel and lie on the mattress you’re considering
- Mattress reviews can be solicited or inauthentic, making it challenging to find genuine feedback from real customers
Costco Membership
In order to shop for a mattress at Costco online or in-store, you’ll need to have a Costco membership. These memberships are typically sold for less than $100 per year, and you can join at any time. When shopping online, you’ll need to create an account using your Costco ID, but if you choose to shop in-store, simply show your Costco membership card to the Costco associate upon entry.
Costco In-Store Experience
A typical Costco store stocks 4,000 types of items, which is likely no surprise to you if you’ve ever been to a Costco warehouse. The in-store mattress shopping experience at Costco will fall somewhere between that of a traditional mattress retail store and that of a department store. Costco doesn’t only sell mattresses, so there won’t be dedicated (or pushy) mattress salespeople at your beck and call, and the store isn’t likely to carry every single mattress brand or style that it has available for purchase.
The mattress and bedding section in Costco stores is typically situated in the center of the store where most warehouse floor space is available. In this area, you’ll have the opportunity to compare how the mattresses on display look, feel, are priced, and even smell.
From Costco’s website’s information, it seems that the company ships all mattress orders. The estimated delivery time frame will vary depending on the brand of the mattress you select. Delivery will include white-glove service with in-home set up and removal of packing materials. Removal of your old mattress can be requested. Items returned through Costco.com can be refunded in full, including shipping and handling fees, but it’s unclear if the return policy is the same for in-store purchases.
Costco Online Experience
If you choose to shop for a Costco mattress from your mobile phone or computer, here’s what you’ll find and a few pointers to keep in mind. The Costco website is relatively barebones when stacked up against the competition, much like its warehouses, but shoppers will find all the essential information they need to make a purchase decision on the website.
Costco.com currently has 20 brands of mattresses for sale and more than 200 styles and sizes in total. You’ll have the option to narrow your search by price, brand, size, mattress type, and even mattress firmness and composition, two filters we haven’t seen often on other retailers’ websites. These filters can prove especially helpful if you know your mattress preferences off the bat.
The features of each mattress are clearly laid out in the product description, which is supplied directly by the manufacturer. You’ll find information about the mattress brand, product details and specifications, customer reviews, and shipping and return information.
The main benefit of shopping on Costco.com rather than in-person at a Costco store is that you’ll have quick access to compare the various brands and styles of mattresses that Costco sells, some of which may not be available at your local store. We recommend starting your Costco mattress shopping experience on the Costco website to help you narrow down your search to a handful of mattresses. Once you’ve done so, head to your Costco store to see, feel, and lie on the mattress you’re considering in-person.
Keep in mind that Costco doesn’t directly outline what its return policies are for mattresses online, but from what we can gather, Costco aims to satisfy its customers and won’t charge for shipping if the company is contacted within a reasonable time period (a few months after purchase).
