  • Light sleepers who share the bedLight sleepers who sleep with a partner may want a bed with better motion isolation.

Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon Firmness and Feel

Firmness

The Simmons Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon mattress comes in multiple firmness options. The Classic Top model is available in plush, medium and firm. The Pillow Top version comes in plush and medium firmnesses.

On a 1–10 firmness scale, with one the softest and ten the firmest, here’s where each model falls.

  • Classic Top Plush: 4/10
  • Classic Top Medium: 6.5/10
  • Classic Top Extra Firm: 8/10
  • Pillow Top Plush: 3/10
  • Pillow Top Medium: 5.5/10

What does the Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon feel like?

The best mattress firmness for you depends on how you sleep, your body weight, and your comfort preference. The average person prefers a medium-firm mattress, which is the firmness of the Classic Top medium option. Back and stomach sleepers and average-weight people are likely to enjoy the Classic Top medium bed.

Side sleepers and lightweight people tend to prefer a softer feel that allows the body to gently sink in for sufficient cushioning. Both the Pillow Top and plush models work well for the average side sleeper and lightweight person.

The extra-firm Harmony Lux mattress is the best of these beds for heavier people. This is because the firmer feel and additional support help provide healthy body alignment for plus-size people. However, the ultra-thick comfort layers may not be as good of a fit for heavier stomach sleepers. If you’re in that category, consider an ultra-supportive hybrid or innerspring mattress. For the most supportive mattresses, see the best mattress for heavy people and our best for stomach sleepers.

What Sleeping Position is the Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon Best For?

Body Type:BACK SLEEPERSSTOMACH SLEEPERSSIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs): 535
Average weight (130–230 lbs):525
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): 324

1 = Very poor     2 = Not good     3 = Fair     4 = Good     5 = Excellent

Back Sleepers

The best mattresses for back sleepers are supportive enough to minimize sinking at the hips while soft enough to gently cradle the lower back. The Harmony Lux Carbon has what most back sleepers need. We recommend the medium-firm feel of the Classic Top medium model for lightweight and average-weight back sleepers who weigh less than 230 pounds.

This mattress isn’t as good for heavyweight back sleepers. Because the Carbon mattress doesn’t have zoned support, bulkier body parts like the glutes may not be properly supported. While someone right around 230 lbs may achieve restful sleep, someone at 300 pounds or more should look for a sturdier mattress.

Side Sleepers

Thanks to two plush models and an optional pillow top, the Harmony Lux Carbon provides the cushioning and pressure relief that side sleepers need. Lightweight side sleepers generally prefer an ultra-soft surface that cradles the shoulders and hips, and both plush models offer this. Average-weight side sleepers are well-suited by the medium Pillow Top version.

Heavyweight side sleepers need thick comfort layers without too much give to a balance support and pressure relief. We like the Classic Top medium firmness for plus-size side sleepers. If you’re interested in checking out other excellent side sleeper mattresses, see what beds made our list for the best mattresses for side sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers require a balance between support and cushioning. In particular, most stomach sleepers do best on a bed with reinforced support along the lumbar spine. This keeps the hips from sinking in too low, without forcing customers to opt for an extra-firm mattress that doesn’t offer the cushioning needed for optimal comfort.

Ultimately, the Harmony Lux Carbon isn’t one of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers. Its extra-thick comfort layers may sink in too much at the hips, especially for average-weight and heavyweight stomach sleepers. We think lightweight stomach sleepers will do OK on this bed because their hips aren’t as heavy. Still, there are better beds for stomach sleepers.

Combination Sleepers

To get the best sleep, combination sleepers need a mattress that’s easy to move around upon. They also need a mattress that supports multiple sleeping positions, so that they can maintain support when they change positions throughout the night. During our in-house mattress testing process, we were impressed by how responsive this bed was. It quickly adjusted to our movements.

This isn’t one of our top picks for stomach sleepers or heavyweight combination sleepers. We recommend the Harmony Lux to lightweight and average-weight combination sleepers who weigh less than 230 lbs and spend most of their time sleeping on their back or side. If you tend towards stomach sleeping, one of the beds that made our best mattresses for combination sleepers list may better suit you.

Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon Performance

Is the Harmony Lux Carbon cooling?

The Harmony Lux Carbon has cooling technologies found throughout the mattress. This bed is good for most hot sleepers because it has a breathable cover and foams infused with cooling gels. It also includes a layer of naturally breathable innerspring coils. However, the bed sleeps just a bit warmer than the coolest hybrid and innerspring mattresses thanks to its generous foam layers. If you wake up hot and sweaty, head over to our countdown of the best cooling mattresses.

Edge Support

The Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon construction includes a reinforced perimeter that creates some of the sturdiest edges that we’ve seen in a luxury hybrid bed. You can lie or sit along the mattress perimeter comfortably.

Responsiveness

Earning a 4.5/5 on our responsiveness test, this mattress should allow for stellar ease of movement. Even though this bed boasts thick foam layers, its innerspring support system and responsive foams mean you likely won’t feel stuck when switching positions. Combination sleepers should especially appreciate that.

Motion Isolation: is it good for those who share a bed?

A good bed for couples reduce motion transfer across the bed, ensuring each person sleeps undisturbed. This mattress performed decently in our motion isolation test, but there was still a bit of movement from one side of the bed to the other.

Pain Relief

For a bed to do ease aches and pains, it needs to support proper spinal alignment while cushioning joints. We like the Harmony Lux Carbon for those who sleep on their side or back, because it balances cushioning and support. However, we don’t recommend it for people who prefer sleeping on their stomachs because it doesn’t optimally support a healthy spine in this position.

Heavier folks tend to sleep better on beds with zoned support, keeping the heavier lumbar region from sinking in too far. Additionally, there are beds designed specifically for bigger bodies with even stronger coils and more durable foams. If you weigh over 230 lbs, check out our Saatva HD mattress review to see a bed designed for bigger bodies.

Durability

The Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon is a thick hybrid mattress made using a variety of high-end materials. It’s more durable than the average mattress and is likely to last most people around a decade. For heavier folks or people who want an even longer-lasting mattress, consider a mattress with latex foam layers. Latex is a material known for its resilience, with some of the best latex mattresses having long warranties thanks to their durability.

Construction: What’s Under the Surface?

The Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon is a high-end hybrid mattress. It comes in two versions: the Classic Top or Pillow Top. The Classic Top comes in plush, medium and extra firm, while the Pillow Top is available in plush and medium firmnesses.

If you want the best bang for your buck, opt for the Classic Top. Choose the Pillow Top if you want luxuriant comfort and a hugging feel. Thanks to the five mattress models and an ultra-durable build, this is an excellent bed for most sleepers. However, the thick comfort layers may not provide adequate support for stomach sleepers, especially those who weigh more than 230 pounds.

Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon Classic Top: Plush, Medium or Extra Firm

Layer #1: InfiniCool Lux Cover

The InfiniCool Lux mattress cover is made using sustainable fabric technology with a mission to create cleaner oceans. Ocean plastics are collected and converted into a smooth and durable fabric. With additional cooling technology, this cover is refreshingly cool and breathable.

Layer #2: RightTemp Wave foam (Extra Firm) or AirFeel foam (Plush and Medium)

The top layer of the Lux Carbon mattress is designed for cooler sleep, with conductive carbon fibers that move excess body heat away from the sleeping surface. In the medium and plush mattresses, a softer AirFeel foam delivers advanced pressure relief and a “hugging” feel. The extra firm mattress’s RightTemp foam is more supportive, providing a sensation closer to sleeping “on” than “in” the mattress.

Layer #3: Firm Comfort Foam (Extra Firm) or RightTemp Wave Foam (Plush and Medium)

The second comfort layer for all Classic Top models is firmer than the previous layer. This encourages healthy spinal alignment without too much sinkage at the hips and lower back.

Layer #4: Beautyrest Gel Memory Foam

A layer of high-density memory foam brings contouring for healthy body alignment and cushioning at sensitive pressure points.

Layer #5: Firm Comfort Foam (Extra Firm), Medium Comfort Foam (Medium) or GelTouch Foam (Plush)

A final layer of foam separates the comfort foam system from the pocketed coils. Different densities of foam are used to create further differences in support and cushion between the plush, extra firm and medium mattress models.

Layer #6: T2 Pocketed Coil Technology with BeautyEdge

Individually encased coils provide consistent support and a cool sleep environment. Because the coils move independently, they help minimize motion transfer while achieving targeted pressure relief and support. BeautyEdge coils reinforce the mattress at its perimeter, creating ultra-sturdy edges.

Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon Pillow Top: Plush or Medium

Layer #1: InfiniCool Lux Cover

The same cool-to-the-touch sleep surface as seen in the Classic Top models. Seaqual Fabric Technology transforms plastics sourced from the ocean into a strong, sleek fabric.

Layer #2: AirFeel Foam

An even softer, more luxurious version of the Beautyrest AirFeel foam for a posh, pillow top sleeping experience.

Layer #3: RightTemp Wave Foam

The same breathable, supportive foam as in the Classic for excellent spine alignment.

Layer #4: Medium Comfort Foam

A medium transitional polyfoam for a soft yet supportive feel.

Layer #5: Dynamic Response Memory Foam

Memory foam designed to quickly adapt to movements, delivering both contouring and responsiveness.

Layer #6: Medium Comfort Foam (Medium) or GelTouch Foam (Plush)

A final layer of foam that influences the feel and support level of the mattress. The medium comfort foam is more supportive while the GelTouch foam makes the plush pillow top luxuriously soft.

Layer #7: T2 Pocketed Coil Technology with BeautyEdge

The same precision support system as the Classic, with a pocketed coil design for targeted support. Extra support along the edges means you and your partner can comfortably spread out. Ample airflow helps keep hot sleepers cool.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

Simmons Beautyrest mattresses aren’t compressed and shipped in a box like many popular online mattress brands. Instead, every new mattress comes with free white glove delivery. With white glove delivery, a team hand delivers your new bed, carries it to your bedroom and sets it up for you. They’ll even remove your old mattress if you’d like. Simmons only ships within the continental U.S.

Warranty

The Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon mattress comes with a 10-year warranty, the most common mattress warranty period on the market. During this time, Simmons will repair or replace issues caused by defective materials or workmanship. For instance, indentations of more than 1.5” are covered under warranty. Our only qualm is that this warranty isn’t particularly generous compared to some other luxury mattresses.

Trial Period & Returns

Simmons gives you 100 nights to sleep on your new bed before deciding if it’s the one for you. During this time, pay attention to how well you sleep and how you feel in the morning.

You can return the Beautyrest mattress any time during the 100-night sleep trial, but we recommend giving it a chance for at least two to four weeks. This is how long it takes for the materials to break in and for your body to grow accustomed to a new sleeping surface. To return the mattress, contact Beautyrest and the company will organize a mattress pickup. Once the bed has been picked up, you can expect to see a full refund within five business days.

The Beautyrest Black Hybrid is Simmon’s highest-end mattress. Thanks to various proprietary mattress technologies, the Black Hybrid sleeps even cooler than the Harmony Lux Carbon. With thicker memory foam layers and responsive latex, the Black Hybrid also provides superior pressure relief and ease of movement.

Both mattresses come in plush and medium firmness options. The Black Hybrid is also available in ultra plush, which leads us to recommend it over the Harmony Lux Carbon for people who prefer a deep hugging mattress feel. The Carbon is available in extra-firm, which is better for those who like a firmer-than-average feel.

It only comes in one firmness level (firm), but you can opt for cooling and comfort upgrades. The comfort upgrades softens the feel of the Lux Hybrid.

The Carbon is offered in multiple firmness options, including an extra-firm model. As a result, the Carbon is better for those who want to customize the feel of their mattress. Our team thinks the Lux Hybrid works best for people who require greater support.

Even though both mattresses come in multiple firmness levels, the differences in construction make the Saatva a better pick for most heavyweight people and stomach sleepers. The Beautyrest is a superior choice for most side sleepers and lightweight folks.
