How Does the Beautyrest Mattress Feel?

Firmness

The Simmons Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon mattress comes in multiple firmness options. The Classic Top model is available in plush, medium and firm. The Pillow Top version comes in plush and medium firmnesses.

On a 1–10 firmness scale, with one the softest and ten the firmest, here’s where each model falls.

  • Classic Top Plush: 4/10
  • Classic Top Medium: 6.5/10
  • Classic Top Extra Firm: 8/10
  • Pillow Top Plush: 3/10
  • Pillow Top Medium: 5.5/10

The best mattress firmness for you depends on how you sleep, your body weight, and your comfort preference. The average person prefers a medium-firm mattress, which is the firmness of the Classic Top medium option. Back and stomach sleepers and average-weight people are likely to enjoy the Classic Top medium bed.

Side sleepers and lightweight people tend to prefer a softer feel that allows the body to gently sink in for sufficient cushioning. Both the Pillow Top and plush models work well for the average side sleeper and lightweight person.

The extra-firm Harmony Lux mattress is the best of these beds for heavier people. This is because the firmer feel and additional support help provide healthy body alignment for plus-size people. However, the ultra-thick comfort layers may not be as good of a fit for heavier stomach sleepers. If you’re in that category, consider an ultra-supportive hybrid or innerspring mattress. For the most supportive mattresses, see the best mattress for heavy people.

Temperature

The Harmony Lux Carbon has cooling technologies found throughout the mattress. This bed is good for most hot sleepers because it has a breathable cover and foams infused with cooling gels. It also includes a layer of naturally breathable innerspring coils. However, the bed sleeps just a bit warmer than the coolest hybrid and innerspring mattresses thanks to its generous foam layers. If you wake up hot and sweaty, head over to our countdown of the best cooling mattresses.

Support

The Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon is made from durable materials. The construction includes a reinforced perimeter that creates some of the sturdiest edges that we’ve seen in a luxury hybrid bed. While this construction is likely to last most sleepers ten years or more, it’s not our top pick for plus-size people.

Heavier folks tend to sleep better on beds with zoned support, keeping the heavier lumbar region from sinking in too far. Additionally, there are beds designed specifically for bigger bodies with even stronger coils and more durable foams. If you weigh over 230 pounds, check out our Saatva HD mattress review to see a bed designed for bigger bodies.

Back Sleepers

The best mattresses for back sleepers are supportive enough to minimize sinking at the hips while soft enough to gently cradle the lower back. The Harmony Lux Carbon has what most back sleepers need. We recommend the medium-firm feel of the Classic Top medium model for lightweight and average-weight back sleepers who weigh less than 230 pounds.

This mattress isn’t as good for heavyweight back sleepers. Because the Carbon mattress doesn’t have zoned support, bulkier body parts like the glutes may not be properly supported. While someone right around 230 pounds may achieve restful sleep, someone at 300 pounds or more should look for a sturdier mattress.

Side Sleepers

Thanks to two plush models and an optional pillow top, the Harmony Lux Carbon provides the cushioning and pressure relief that side sleepers need. Lightweight side sleepers generally prefer an ultra-soft surface that cradles the shoulders and hips, and both plush models offer this. Average-weight side sleepers are well-suited by the medium Pillow Top version.

Heavyweight side sleepers need thick comfort layers without too much give to a balance support and pressure relief. We like the Classic Top medium firmness for plus-size side sleepers. If you’re interested in checking out other excellent side sleeper mattresses, see what beds made our list for the best mattresses for side sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers require a balance between support and cushioning. In particular, most stomach sleepers do best on a bed with reinforced support along the lumbar spine. This keeps the hips from sinking in too low, without forcing customers to opt for an extra-firm mattress that doesn’t offer the cushioning needed for optimal comfort.

Ultimately, the Harmony Lux Carbon isn’t one of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers. Its extra-thick comfort layers may sink in too much at the hips, especially for average-weight and heavyweight stomach sleepers. We think lightweight stomach sleepers will do OK on this bed because their hips aren’t as heavy. Still, there are better beds for stomach sleepers.

Combination Sleepers

To get the best sleep, combination sleepers need a mattress that’s easy to move around upon. They also need a mattress that supports multiple sleeping positions, so that they can maintain support when they change positions throughout the night. During our in-house mattress testing process, we were impressed by how responsive this bed was. It quickly adjusted to our movements.

This isn’t one of our top picks for stomach sleepers or heavyweight combination sleepers. We recommend the Harmony Lux to lightweight and average-weight combination sleepers who weigh less than 230 pounds and spend most of their time sleeping on their back or side. If you tend towards stomach sleeping, one of the beds that made our best mattresses for combination sleepers list may better suit you.

Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  5 3 5
Average weight (130 – 230 lbs): 5 2 5
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  3 2 4

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Does It Fit Your Lifestyle?

How Does it Work for Seniors?

Older folks sleep best on a mattress that helps ease body aches and pains. For a bed to do this, it needs to support proper spinal alignment while cushioning joints. We like the Harmony Lux Carbon for seniors who sleep on their side or back, because it balances cushioning and support. However, we don’t recommend it for older people who prefer sleeping on their stomachs because it doesn’t optimally support a healthy spine in this position.

The bed’s impressive edge support also makes this bed good for seniors. Many older folks use the edges when getting in and out of bed. Seniors typically want supportive edges to reduce the risk of falls, and the Carbon boasts incredibly robust edges. See our recommendations for the best mattress for seniors.

How Long Will it Last?

The Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon is a thick hybrid mattress made using a variety of high-end materials. It’s more durable than the average mattress and is likely to last most people around a decade. For heavier folks or people who want an even longer-lasting mattress, consider a mattress with latex foam layers. Latex is a material known for its resilience, with some of the best latex mattresses having long warranties thanks to their durability.

Construction: What’s Under the Surface?

The Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon is a high-end hybrid mattress. It comes in two versions: the Classic Top or Pillow Top. The Classic Top comes in plush, medium and extra firm, while the Pillow Top is available in plush and medium firmnesses.

If you want the best bang for your buck, opt for the Classic Top. Choose the Pillow Top if you want luxuriant comfort and a hugging feel. Thanks to the five mattress models and an ultra-durable build, this is an excellent bed for most sleepers. However, the thick comfort layers may not provide adequate support for stomach sleepers, especially those who weigh more than 230 pounds.

Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon Classic Top: Plush, Medium or Extra Firm

Layer #1: InfiniCool Lux Cover: The InfiniCool Lux mattress cover is made using sustainable fabric technology with a mission to create cleaner oceans. Ocean plastics are collected and converted into a smooth and durable fabric. With additional cooling technology, this cover is refreshingly cool and breathable.

Layer #2: RightTemp Wave foam (Extra Firm) or AirFeel foam (Plush and Medium): The top layer of the Lux Carbon mattress is designed for cooler sleep, with conductive carbon fibers that move excess body heat away from the sleeping surface. In the medium and plush mattresses, a softer AirFeel foam delivers advanced pressure relief and a “hugging” feel. The extra firm mattress’s RightTemp foam is more supportive, providing a sensation closer to sleeping “on” than “in” the mattress.

Layer #3: Firm Comfort Foam (Extra Firm) or RightTemp Wave Foam (Plush and Medium): The second comfort layer for all Classic Top models is firmer than the previous layer. This encourages healthy spinal alignment without too much sinkage at the hips and lower back.

Layer #4: Beautyrest Gel Memory Foam: A layer of high-density memory foam brings contouring for healthy body alignment and cushioning at sensitive pressure points.

Layer #5: Firm Comfort Foam (Extra Firm), Medium Comfort Foam (Medium) or GelTouch Foam (Plush): A final layer of foam separates the comfort foam system from the pocketed coils. Different densities of foam are used to create further differences in support and cushion between the plush, extra firm and medium mattress models.

Layer #6: T2 Pocketed Coil Technology with BeautyEdge: Individually encased coils provide consistent support and a cool sleep environment. Because the coils move independently, they help minimize motion transfer while achieving targeted pressure relief and support. BeautyEdge coils reinforce the mattress at its perimeter, creating ultra-sturdy edges.

Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon Pillow Top: Plush or Medium

Layer #1: InfiniCool Lux Cover: The same cool-to-the-touch sleep surface as seen in the Classic Top models. Seaqual Fabric Technology transforms plastics sourced from the ocean into a strong, sleek fabric.

Layer #2: AirFeel Foam: An even softer, more luxurious version of the Beautyrest AirFeel foam for a posh, pillow top sleeping experience.

Layer #3: RightTemp Wave Foam: The same breathable, supportive foam as in the Classic for excellent spine alignment.

Layer #4: Medium Comfort Foam: A medium transitional polyfoam for a soft yet supportive feel.

Layer #5: Dynamic Response Memory Foam: Memory foam designed to quickly adapt to movements, delivering both contouring and responsiveness.

Layer #6: Medium Comfort Foam (Medium) or GelTouch Foam (Plush): A final layer of foam that influences the feel and support level of the mattress. The medium comfort foam is more supportive while the GelTouch foam makes the plush pillow top luxuriously soft.

Layer #7: T2 Pocketed Coil Technology with BeautyEdge: The same precision support system as the Classic, with a pocketed coil design for targeted support. Extra support along the edges means you and your partner can comfortably spread out. Ample airflow helps keep hot sleepers cool.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?

Shipping & Unboxing

Simmons Beautyrest mattresses aren’t compressed and shipped in a box like many popular online mattress brands. Instead, every new mattress comes with free white glove delivery. With white glove delivery, a team hand delivers your new bed, carries it to your bedroom and sets it up for you. They’ll even remove your old mattress if you’d like. Simmons only ships within the continental U.S.

Warranty

The Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon mattress comes with a 10-year warranty, the most common mattress warranty period on the market. During this time, Simmons will repair or replace issues caused by defective materials or workmanship. For instance, indentations of more than 1.5” are covered under warranty. Our only qualm is that this warranty isn’t particularly generous compared to some other luxury mattresses.

Trial Period & Returns

Simmons gives you 100 nights to sleep on your new bed before deciding if it’s the one for you. During this time, pay attention to how well you sleep and how you feel in the morning.

You can return the Beautyrest mattress any time during the 100-night sleep trial, but we recommend giving it a chance for at least two to four weeks. This is how long it takes for the materials to break in and for your body to grow accustomed to a new sleeping surface. To return the mattress, contact Beautyrest and the company will organize a mattress pickup. Once the bed has been picked up, you can expect to see a full refund within five business days.

Beautyrest Mattress FAQs

Does the Beautyrest Lux Carbon help with back pain?

This mattress may help relieve back pain for certain sleepers thanks to its ability to support healthy spine alignment. It’s particularly well suited for back and side sleepers with back pain who weigh less than 230 pounds. It’s not as good for heavier people or for stomach sleepers.

Is Sealy or Beautyrest a better mattress?

Sealy and Simmons Beautyrest are both trusted mattress retailers that craft high-quality mattresses. Beautyrest crafts luxury hybrid mattresses, while Sealy makes innerspring, hybrid and memory foam mattresses. We prefer Sealy for heavier people thanks to zoned support. Beautyrest tends to work best for luxury shoppers who want a resort-style mattress.

Does the Beautyrest Lux Carbon have a “hotel-mattress” feel?

Yes! The Beautyrest Harmony Lux mattress is a high-quality bed with a luxury feel. The pillow top feels like what you’d find at a five-star resort, while the Classic Top models feel like something you’d encounter when staying at a high-end hotel like a Marriott.

Comparing the Beautyrest Mattress

The Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon vs. the Beautyrest Black Hybrid Mattress

The Beautyrest Black Hybrid is Simmon’s highest-end mattress. Thanks to various proprietary mattress technologies, the Black Hybrid sleeps even cooler than the Harmony Lux Carbon. With thicker memory foam layers and responsive latex, the Black Hybrid also provides superior pressure relief and ease of movement.

Both mattresses come in plush and medium firmness options. The Black Hybrid is also available in ultra plush, which leads us to recommend it over the Harmony Lux Carbon for people who prefer a deep hugging mattress feel. The Carbon is available in extra-firm, which is better for those who like a firmer-than-average feel.

Beautyrest Black

One of Simmons Beautyrest’s innerspring collections, the Beautyrest Black line includes innerspring mattresses that are available in multiple firmness ratings. The Tatiana, Sonya, Natasha, Calista, Desiree, and Katarina Pillow Top range in price point and features, but all include pocketed coils and layers of foam.

The Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon vs. the Beautyrest Harmony Lux Diamond Mattress

Both the Harmony Lux Carbon and Diamond are high-end hybrid mattresses. The Diamond boasts thicker comfort foam layers that better isolate motion—great for couples—and cushion pressure points. Both beds come in a Classic Top or Pillow Top version with multiple firmness levels.

While both mattresses come in plush and medium firmnesses, only the Diamond has an ultra-plush model. The Carbon, on the other hand, includes an extra-firm model. As a result, the Diamond is better for lightweight side sleepers who want a cloud-like feel. Our team thinks the Carbon works best for people who require greater support.

Beautyrest Harmony Lux Diamond Mattress

The Beautyrest Harmony Lux Diamond is a luxury pillow-top mattress with plush foam layers. It is designed for couples and side sleepers looking for pressure relief, especially lighter sleepers who want to sink into their mattress layers.

The Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon vs. the Beautyrest Harmony

At $899 for a queen-size bed, the Harmony is the most affordable Beautyrest hybrid mattress. The Harmony Lux Carbon is a thicker, more indulgent mattress that’s a better choice for luxury mattress shoppers. That said, both beds come in similar plush, medium and extra-firm firmnesses, so they both work well for a wide variety of sleepers.

The Beautyrest Harmony sleeps cooler than the Harmony Lux Carbon when you opt for either of the cooling upgrades. Innovative cooling technology paired with thinner comfort layers makes the Harmony best for most hot sleepers.

Beautyrest Harmony

The Beautyrest Harmony features targeted support from coils for heavier compression. Beautyrest features its signature dual-stage coil design that pairs with comforting memory foam for optimal pressure relief.

The brand manages the affordable Cocoon bed-in-a-box line, the innerspring Response series, the memory foam Conform line, and a line of luxury hybrid mattresses.

We recommend that budget shoppers and memory foam lovers consider Sealy, while those looking for an opulent feel opt for the high-end Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon mattress.

The Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon vs. Tempur-Pedic Mattresses

Tempur-Pedic and Simmons Beautyrest are two of the leading brands for luxury shoppers. Every Tempur-Pedic mattress boasts generous layers of traditional memory foam that deeply contour to the body’s curves for unparalleled pressure relief.

The Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon comes in multiple firmnesses. The softest of the Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon mattresses feels similar to the softer Tempur-Pedic beds. On the other hand, the firmest Beautyrest Lux Carbon feels much firmer than any Tempur-Pedic mattress. The Beautyrest sleeps cooler, while Tempur-Pedic mattresses are better for couples thanks to their superior motion isolation.

TEMPUR-Adapt

With decades of expertise making memory foam beds, it’s hard to not love TEMPUR-Pedic. The TEMPUR-Adapt is one of our favorite luxury memory foam mattress models and is sure to deliver a return on your investment.

The Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon vs. Saatva Classic Mattress

The Saatva Classic is one of the most popular online luxury mattresses. With dual coil layers and zoned support, the Saatva is bouncier, cooler and more supportive than the Harmony Lux Carbon mattress. In comparison, the Carbon’s generous foam layers provide superior pressure relief.

Even though both mattresses come in multiple firmness levels, the differences in construction make the Saatva a better pick for most heavyweight people and stomach sleepers. The Beautyrest is a superior choice for most side sleepers and lightweight folks.

Saatva Classic

Saatva is one of the first direct-to-consumer online mattress companies. The Saatva mattress is not a “bed-in-a-box” company, because it doesn’t come in a box at all. It’s a regular innerspring mattress delivered to your door by delivery professionals.

Pros/Cons

Pros

  • Excellent Pressure Relief: There are very few beds with as generous of comfort layers as the Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon. This level of padding helps to cushion problem areas, with the Pillow Top models especially well-suited for side sleepers.
  • Sturdy Edges: The Carbon’s edges are reinforced, so you can lie or sit along the mattress perimeter comfortably.
  • Multiple Firmness Options: With firmness that ranges from soft to firm and two models with a plush pillow top, this mattress works for people no matter their firmness preference.
  • Easy to Move Around: Even though this bed boasts thick foam layers, its innerspring support system and responsive foams mean you likely won’t feel stuck when switching positions.

Cons

  • Not for Heavy Stomach Sleepers: With some of the thickest comfort layers around, this mattress can sag a bit at the hips when you sleep on your stomach. The likelihood of this being a problem increases the more that you weigh.
  • Budget: The Classic Top Harmony Lux isn’t too pricey for a high-end hybrid, but we’ve certainly seen hybrid beds that are much cheaper. Plus, the mattress costs a bit extra if you upgrade to the Pillow Top.
  • Not for Light Sleepers Who Share the Bed: This mattress performed decently in our motion isolation test, but there was still a bit of movement from one side of the bed to the other. Light sleepers who sleep with a partner may want a bed with better motion isolation.

What’s the Bottom Line?

The Beautyrest Harmony Lux Carbon is a high-end hybrid that comes in multiple firmness options and has an optional pillow top upgrade. With some of the thickest comfort layers that we’ve come across, this bed delivers superb pressure relief. Side sleepers of every body size are well supported, and back sleepers also tend to sleep well on this bed. Plus, it doesn’t sleep hot and is easy to move around upon.

Simmons offers free mattress delivery, setup and old mattress removal. And with 100 nights to try your new bed risk-free, you only keep it if it helps you achieve a comfortable, restful night of sleep.
