DreamCloud Premier vs. Bear Overview

The DreamCloud Premier and Bear Original are very different in price and construction. With the luxury, hybrid DreamCloud Premier, you are paying a premium for superior performance and versatility—thanks to the hybrid construction of foam atop coils. The budget-friendly, all-foam Bear is aimed more for average-weight, active people who need stellar pressure relief and the muscle recovery aid of Celliant fibers.

Who Should Choose the DreamCloud Premier Mattress?

  • Combination Sleepers: This hybrid is a robust solution, accommodating most sleepers regardless of body weight and preferred sleeping position. Its versatility makes it great if you toss and turn at night, or share the bed.
  • Couples: The DreamCloud Premier earned Nerd’s top pick for couples because of its well-rounded performance, pressure relief, and hotel-like feel.
  • Heavyweight Sleepers: With the support from the base coil layer, those over 230 lbs will likely appreciate the balance of softness and stability.

Who Should Choose the Bear Mattress?

  • Shoppers with Active Lifestyles: The Bear Original is a great mattress for athletes. Bear boasts that the Celliant fibers in the mattress cover absorb your heat and turn it into infrared light, aiding blood flow.
  • Shoppers on a Budget: Costing less than half of the DreamCloud Premier, the Bear is a great value for the average sleeper, with three layers of foam and a breathable cover with unique properties.
  • Average-weight Back and Front Sleepers: The all-foam Bear delivers the cushion and pressure relief of memory foam for those under 230 lbs who prefer your back, front, or a combination.

DreamCloud Premier vs. Bear: Top Similarities

  • Back and Stomach Sleepers: Despite very different materials, if you sleep on your back or front, both beds offer cushion for your tailbone or hips and support that keeps your spine’s natural “S” curve.
  • Firmness and Feel: Landing in the optimal medium-firm range, the DreamCloud Premier and Bear mattresses create that balanced feel that appeals to a lot of sleepers. Our testers described the feel like sleeping “on” these mattresses vs “in” them.
  • Temperature Neutral: Neither of these mattresses excels at cooling you down, but the average person should find them reasonably temperature-neutral.

DreamCloud Premier vs. Bear: Top Differences

  • Price: The DreamCloud Premier would be classified as a luxury buy. The Bear will cost you less than half, so stay with us to see the best buy for you.
  • Construction: Mattress materials matter, affecting temperature, durability, support, and many other performance factors. When comparing memory foam vs hybrid, it’s important to inventory your sleep preferences and needs.
  • Durability: The DreamCloud Premier will serve you well for around 10 years, which is when it’s typically time to replace old mattresses. The foam in the Bear might show signs of wear a bit earlier, lasting closer to 7 years.

DreamCloud Premier vs. Bear: Firmness & Feel Differences

At Mattress Nerd, our sleep scientists rate mattress firmness on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest. Both the DreamCloud Premier (6.5/10) and Bear Original (7/10) land in the medium-firm range. This is a popular firmness due to the balance of comfort and support provided.

What’s the Firmness Of the DreamCloud Premier & Bear Mattresses?

Firmness is highly affected by your body weight and favorite sleeping position. That being said, with the more expensive DreamCloud Premier, you’re paying for a versatility that’s ideal for couples with varying sleep needs. It’s likely to be a solid investment.

The all-foam Bear, on the other hand, feels great for back and stomach sleepers under 230 lbs. Side sleepers, you’ll find it too firm. Heavyweight sleepers, you won’t find it firm enough to support your back.

What Do the DreamCloud Premier & Bear Mattresses Feel Like?

The benefit of the hybrid model is that it gives you the best of both worlds: cushy, pressure-relieving memory foam and strong, stable coils. The DreamCloud Premier delivers these benefits so you feel slightly cradled while resting atop the transition foam and coil base.

Surprisingly, our testers found the all-foam Bear to be quite responsive, even bouncy. This makes it easy to move around, which is great for combination sleepers or seniors, but a little less great for light sleepers who share the bed with a partner, pet, or child.

What’s It Like to Sleep On the DreamCloud Premier & Bear Mattresses?

The DreamCloud Premier performs like a hotel-luxury bed. There’s just no bad sleeping position when resting atop one of the best pillow top mattresses. If we’re nitpicking, lightweight side sleepers might not experience as much contour and could also consider softer mattresses.

A trademark of all-foam beds is the stellar pressure relief they offer. The Bear does not disappoint. While this seems to be most felt if you sleep on your back or stomach, our pressure mat showed happy blues and greens (no pressure collection) for average-weight side sleepers, too.

Heavyweight (> 230 lbs): 23

Average-Weight Sleepers (130–230 lbs)

Average-weight sleepers, the DreamCloud Premier was designed with your needs in mind. Whether you sleep on your back, front, side, or a combination, this mattress has the cushion to prevent pressure collection in your hips, shoulders, or tail bone area and the support it takes to help keep your spine aligned.

The Bear is an affordable alternative for back and stomach sleepers in this category. Side sleepers, you might prefer something a hair softer for better pressure relief.

Heavyweight Sleepers (> 230 lbs)

The coils of the DreamCloud Premier are capable of supporting your points of heavier contact with the mattress like your hips, shoulders, or tailbone, while the memory foam cushions the lighter parts like your head and feet. Back and side sleepers will be most pleased with this mattress, but it also does a decent job keeping your hips elevated if you love to sleep on your tummy.

All-foam mattresses like the Bear, on the other hand, aren’t usually a good fit for heavyweight sleepers. The material just isn’t strong enough to support healthy alignment for your spine, which could cause back pain.

Lightweight Sleepers (< 130 lbs)

Sometimes lightweight sleepers don’t quite sink into the comfort layers to receive pressure relief. But the DreamCloud Premier’s euro pillow top is different. It feels amazing for back and stomach sleepers, while side sleepers might decide on a softer mattress.

Similarly, the Bear’s comfort layer is plush enough to provide cushion for back and stomach sleepers. But it’s too firm of a mattress for most side sleepers.

Differences In Mattress Construction

The relatively thick DreamCloud Premier is comprised of several foam layers atop a coil base. This luxury hybrid is a great pick for most folks, but big and tall shoppers will especially appreciate its 14″ profile. The 10″ Bear mattress is an all-foam bed with pressure-relieving memory foam and Celliant fibers to soothe those aches and pains.

Cover

Here we have two very different, but very unique mattress covers. The DreamCloud lineup has a light, breathable cover made from a cashmere blend. Yes, cashmere. The Bear brand uses Celliant Infrared Yarn technology to speed up muscle recovery. While we did not test this in the Nerd lab, the Bear website says the FDA has determined the material to be a general wellness product.

Comfort Layers

The DreamCloud Premier’s euro pillow top is 1″ of high-loft memory foam plus 1″ of soft foam. Then you get to the 2.5″ memory foam that is aimed at providing pressure relief.

Gel-infused memory foam wicks body heat away in the Bear’s comfort layer, but only minimally. For truly hot sleepers, you’ll want to upgrade to the Bear Hybrid. The coil layer does the job which is why it made our list of best cooling mattresses.

Support Layers

The DreamCloud Premier has one inch of transition foam to keep you from feeling the coils below, which are the workhorse of this mattress. Individually-wrapped, they aid in contouring and motion isolation, as well as provide durability. Finally, there’s one more layer of foam beneath the coils to further stifle motion.

The Bear’s firmer layers consist of a transition foam and a high-density support foam. These give the mattress better stability and durability, though not to the same level as a hybrid mattress.

DreamCloud Premier vs. Bear Mattress Performance Ratings & Differences

Temperature

Hybrid beds, made of foam and coils, address some of the drawbacks of traditional all-foam mattresses. The hybrid DreamCloud Premier’s base layer of coils has average airflow, making it temperature neutral. The all-foam Bear mattress, despite its cooling graphite-gel memory foam, performs below average.

Motion Transfer

While the DreamCloud Premier’s top layer is plush, the transition foam and coil layers have a little bounce. As a result, it does an average job of keeping movement isolated at its source. This performance, along with its versatility and edge support, earned it a place on our list of best mattresses for couples.

Here’s where all-foam beds typically excel, but the Bear’s transition comfort layer is surprisingly bouncy. This is good for those who toss and turn. Not so good if you share the bed.

Edge Support

If you’ve ever slipped off the bed or felt sagging while sitting on the edge, your mattress likely lacked edge support. What is edge support in a mattress? It’s how well a mattress’ construction holds up, all the way to the perimeter. Here’s where the hybrid’s strong coil base shines. The DreamCloud Premier felt sturdier to our testers who noticed a slight sag in the all-foam Bear mattress when sitting on the edge.

Pressure Relief

Both of these mattresses excel at preventing pressure from collecting in the heavier areas of your body, like your hips, shoulders, and lower back. This is why they both made the grade, and our list, of best mattresses for hip pain. The DreamCloud Premier’s soft euro pillow top and contouring memory foam work together to relieve pressure.

And despite being reasonably firm, the Bear Original’s three layers of foam help cradle the heavier areas of your body, providing welcome relief. Though side sleepers generally need more cushion, our pressure mat showed excellent dispursement for lightweight side sleepers.

Pain Relief

The DreamCloud Premier’s construction works to cushion and support your body, no matter your sleeping position, so our Nerds rated it as one of the best mattresses for…just about everyone. Check out more details in our roundup of the best mattresses for back sleepers, best mattresses for stomach sleepers, and best mattresses for side sleepers.

With a 7/10 firmness, the Bear’s foam layers keep the nice “S” curve of your spine—something that may help in ease lower back pain. So for those under 230 lbs, we think it’s an affordable option for back, front, or combination sleepers. If you have chronic back or neck pain, it’s worth stepping up to the Bear Hybrid, on our list of the best mattresses for back pain.

Durability

Mattresses with coils typically have a longer lifespan, but memory foam will begin to break down and sag earlier. As a result, the hybrid DreamCloud Premier should be a good investment for about a decade, while the Bear will show signs of wear earlier, around the 7-year mark.

Our Final Take

If you’re an average sleeper, not a light sleeper or someone who overheats at night, then the luxury DreamCloud will make bedtime something you look forward to all day, for about a decade. If you’re an average-weight back or stomach sleeper with an active lifestyle, the pressure and muscle relief of the more affordable Bear should suit you just fine.

DreamCloud Premier & Bear FAQs

What is the firmness of the DreamCloud Premier?

The DreamCloud Premier is a medium-firm mattress, rated at 6.5/10 on our mattress firmness scale. This is a popular or “universal” level because most people prefer a balance of cushion and support. It’s the age-old Goldilocks scenario—not too hard, not too soft, but just right.

Do you need a box spring with a Bear mattress?

No, in fact, a boxspring will not provide even support for an all-foam mattress. You can either purchase the Bear Foundation which is a slatted wood base, or use a platform bed, adjustable base, or the floor. Using a boxspring could potentially affect your warranty.

Can the DreamCloud Premier support heavier people?

Yes. That’s one of the robust features you get with this luxury mattress. The construction, memory foam atop steel coils with reinforced edges, capably meets the needs of heavyweight back and side sleepers. Stomach sleepers might decide on a slightly firmer mattress to help elevate their hips in this sleeping position.
