Puffy prides itself on providing cloud-like mattresses that accommodate a wide range of sleepers. The Puffy mattress—their flagship model—is a supportive all-foam mattress, while the Puffy Lux and Puffy Royal are plush hybrid mattresses. In this mattress comparison, you’ll learn what makes each of these Puffy beds stand out from their competitors, and find the model that’s best suited to your sleep needs.

Puffy Mattress Models

Puffy Mattress

The original Puffy mattress stands out from the other Puffy models because of its “universal” firmness level (6/10 on the firmness scale, or medium-firm). It’s the firmest in the Puffy collection, which makes it great for back sleepers who need extra support.

The Original is Puffy’s only all-foam mattress, so instead of a bouncy coil base layer, it has high-density support foam that provides excellent motion isolation. The only downside to a foam foundation is heat retention. The original Puffy isn’t nearly as breathable as the Puffy Lux Hybrid and Puffy Royal Hybrid—despite a layer of Cooling Cloud Foam—so it’s not a great choice for hot sleepers.

Puffy Lux Hybrid Mattress

This mattress is no longer available for purchase. To help you find your next mattress, check out our list of the best mattresses available on the market now.

The Puffy Lux mattress is an upgraded version of the original. It has an added layer of cooling gel memory foam and a springy coil base layer. These coils improve airflow through the mattress, but they cause more motion transfer than the other two Puffy models. The coils also improve mobility on the mattress surface, which is an important feature in a mattress for combination sleepers who frequently change positions while they sleep.

The other main difference between the Puffy Lux Hybrid and the other Puffy mattresses is firmness. The Puffy Lux has a medium firmness that improves contouring around your pressure points. The original Puffy has a medium-firm feel, and the Puffy Royal Hybrid is medium-soft.

Puffy Royal Mattress

This mattress is no longer available for purchase. To help you find your next mattress, check out our list of the best mattresses available on the market now.

The Puffy Royal Hybrid is a truly luxurious hybrid mattress with five foam layers that contour to your spine’s natural curvature and dissipate pressure wherever it might build up. It’s the softest of the bunch, so it offers pressure relief unmatched by any other Puffy mattress. With that said, it’s only a good fit for those who like the feel of a plush, conforming mattress.

While you’ll sink pretty deeply into the foam layers, the “Core Supportbase layers ensure that you stay relatively lifted and evenly supported from head to toe. The coils also improve airflow through the mattress, though the thick foam layers retain quite a bit of heat. We also noticed that the Puffy Royal Hybrid doesn’t have the best edge support, so that’s important to note if you frequent the edges of your bed.

Here at Mattress Nerd, we classify lightweight sleepers as weighing < 130 lbs., while average-weight sleepers are between 130-230 lbs. and heavyweight sleepers weigh over 230 lbs..

You should choose a mattress that works for your sleep position and body type. All three Puffys are excellent mattresses for side sleepers, though heavyweight side sleepers should stick with one of the hybrid models (Puffy Lux and Puffy Royal). Also, the original Puffy and Puffy Lux Hybrid are good choices for lightweight and average-weight back sleepers

Learn More: Best Mattresses for Back Sleepers

We don’t recommend any of the Puffy beds to stomach sleepers, since they’re all relatively soft, and stomach sleepers need a firm mattress; however, lightweight stomach sleepers may get enough support on the original Puffy. For more options, see our list of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

Other Considerations: Cooling, Back Pain, and Couples

Cooling

If you tend to get hot when you sleep, then temperature regulation is a very important factor for your new mattress. Memory foam mattresses naturally absorb more body heat throughout the night, and Puffy works to counter this tendency by incorporating gel-infused foam and breathable ClimateComfort foam. The Puffy Lux Hybrid and Puffy Royal Hybrid also have breathable coil base layers.

Overall, the Puffy line is not the coolest we’ve seen, but if you’re keen to have a Puffy bed, the Puffy Lux Hybrid is your best bet. You can also check out our roundup of the best cooling mattresses.

Back Pain

Finding the best mattress for back pain depends mostly on your sleeping position. Back and stomach sleepers need a mattress that’s firm enough to keep their hips lifted parallel to their shoulders. If their hips sink down too far, it causes their lower back to arch out of alignment, which puts stress on the lumbar region.

With that in mind, we recommend the original Puffy and Puffy Lux Hybrid to back sleepers, and the original Puffy only to lightweight stomach sleepers

Side sleepers need a mattress with lots of sinkage to prevent their shoulders and hips from jamming. Any of the Puffy mattresses will do just fine for this sleeping position since they’re all constructed with soft, contouring foam layers.

Couples

If you and your partner are pretty stationary at night, then motion isolation probably isn’t the most important factor when choosing a new mattress. But if either of you are easily disturbed by movement across the bed, then you’ll want a mattress with minimal motion transfer, like one of our best mattresses for couples.

The original Puffy is great for couples because the top layers of foam effectively trap motion at its source. The Puffy Lux and Puffy Royal have innerspring base layers with a little more kick-back than the original, so they’re not as strong in this category. However, the thick memory foam layers atop the Puffy Royal Hybrid do a good job of dampening minor surface movements.

How Construction Impacts the Feel of the Mattress

All Puffy mattresses incorporate gel-infused comfort foam and high-density support foams. The comfort foams are designed to closely conform to the shape of your body without causing you to overheat. We think the original Puffy and Puffy Lux Hybrid have similar medium to medium-firm feels, but the Puffy Royal Hybrid is decidedly plusher

The support foams act as a transition layer. They have a breathable, open-cell construction that reduces heat build-up. They’re also firmer than the comfort layers in order to keep you from sinking too far into the mattress.

We noticed that the original Puffy feels denser and more supportive than the Puffy Lux Hybrid and Puffy Royal Hybrid. That’s because it has an extra firm base layer of foam instead of coils. The Puffy Lux and Puffy Royal both support your body, but they have a springiness that’s absent in the original.

Compare Puffy Mattresses to More Brands

Here at Mattress Nerd, we spend a lot of time comparing mattress brands to each other to give customers a comprehensive view of the competition:

Puffy FAQs

How long will my Puffy mattress last?

Puffy mattresses are made with high-quality materials like CertiPUR-US certified foam and durable steel coils. They should last at least five years, though foam beds (like the original Puffy) tend to outlive their hybrid counterparts.

How do Puffy mattresses compare to competitors?

Puffy mattresses are generally more pressure-relieving than some of their popular competitors (for example, Purple), and they have similar pricing to other bed-in-a-box memory foam mattresses, like the Nectar mattress. There are mattresses that sleep cooler and provide better support, but overall, we think Puffy is on par with other mid-range mattress brands.

Which Puffy mattress should I choose?

If you are a back sleeper, or if your partner tosses and turns, then the original Puffy is the best fit for you. Side sleepers should opt for the Puffy Lux or Puffy Royal, and hot sleepers will experience the best temperature regulation on the Puffy Lux Hybrid. If pricing is your biggest concern, the original Puffy has the lowest price points (a King or California King costs less than $1,500).

Our Final Take

Puffy is a bed-in-a-box mattress brand that offers exceptional customer service and luxuriously plush mattresses. All three of their mattress models are made in the USA and backed by Lifetime warranties. In addition to their mattress collection, they also offer bed frames and bedding accessories—all at industry standard prices.
