Comparing Puffy Mattresses

Puffy is a bed-in-a-box mattress brand that offers exceptional customer service and luxuriously plush mattresses. Our comparison will tell you what you need to know about the Puffy line of mattresses. Find out what makes these mattresses different, and which one is best suited for your sleep needs.

Why We Love Puffy and Why You Will Too

The Puffy line of mattress is a bed-in-a-box line that includes multiple firmness levels, making Puffy great for several different types of sleepers. The Puffy mattress, Puffy’s flagship model, is an all-foam mattress with excellent motion isolation and responsiveness, meaning it’s ideal for people who toss and turn, – called combination sleepersand their partners.

The Puffy Lux comes in an all-foam and hybrid mode and offers incredible pressure relief and spinal alignment, which can be a huge help for side sleepers or anyone with back pain. The final mattress in the Puffy Line, the Puffy Royal, also comes in an all-foam and hybrid version. It has a 5-zoned support system to keep the head, neck, shoulders and feet comfortable while supporting heavier areas of the body, such as the back.

You will likely prefer the Puffy Lux and the Puffy Royal mattresses if you tend to sleep hot, since both have much better cooling properties than the original Puffy mattress. If you sleep on your stomach, you will sleep much better on the Puffy because it offers more firmness and support than the Puffy Lux. The Puffy Royal offers support for all sleep styles and for those who are struggling with pain in sensitive joints.

Puffy Mattress

  • Best For: Stomach sleepers, Combination sleepers, Couples
  • Price Range: $795-$1,350
  • Standout Feature: The original Puffy mattress stands out because of its incredible affordability. Even on a shoestring budget, the original Puffy mattress makes it possible to get a good night’s sleep without going into debt.

The original Puffy mattress is relatively firm, especially for a memory foam mattress, which makes it great for stomach sleepers who need firm support for proper spine alignment. It also has incredible responsiveness, which gives it a nice bounce, and noteworthy motion isolation, which prevents motion from transferring from one side of the bed to another, making it a great option for couples.

Puffy Lux Mattress

  •  Best For: Hot sleepers, Side sleepers, Anyone with back pain, Couples
  • Price Range: $1,445-$1,995
  • Standout Feature: The Puffy Lux is the ideal mattress for side sleepers and anyone who tends to get hot at night. Thanks to its dual-layer cooling gel foam and body adapting foam, it can contour to any side sleeping position and keep you cool at the same time.

Unlike the Puffy, the Puffy Lux is a more luxurious model with added layer of foam that create a better sleep surface for side sleepers. When we sleep on our sides, we add pressure to areas like our hips and shoulders, but with the right contouring memory foam, like the body adapting foam included in the Puffy Lux, side sleepers can get a good night’s sleep in any position.

Puffy Royal Mattress

  • Best For: Side sleepers, anyone with back pain, people with allergies, combination sleepers
  • Price Range: $1,645-$2,695
  • Standout Feature: The Puffy Royal is a truly luxurious mattress, offering five full layers of memory foam that contour to your spine’s natural curvature and dissipate pressure wherever it might build up, like in the hips or shoulders. Thanks to the zoned support layer, the Puffy Royal offers pressure relief unmatched by any other Puffy mattress.

The Puffy Royal is designed for side sleepers and people who experience back pain. The whole mattress is made with pressure relief in mind. The zoned support layer provides support for your lower back and neck, while the premium foam layer dissipates pressure to prevent any strain on the pressure points.

Whatever your sleep position or body type, you should find a mattress that works for you somewhere in the Puffy line. The Puffy Royal isn’t suited to stomach sleepers, but back and side sleepers should find comfort in the mattress. The Puffy Lux and Puffy Original are each fantastic for side sleepers.

Other Considerations: Cooling, Back Pain and Couples

Cooling

If you tend to get hot when you sleep, then cooling is a very important factor when it comes time to choose a new mattress. Some mattresses, particularly memory foam mattresses, naturally absorb more body heat throughout the night. However, the Puffy has a ClimateComfort layer of foam to help absorb and dissipate heat. The Puffy Lux does an even better job, with an additional layer of cooling cloud gel foam.

Back Pain

Spine alignment is another important factor for all sleeping positions, but it’s especially important for stomach sleepers and side sleepers. Stomach sleepers need a firm mattress to support their lower back and prevent it from sinking into the mattress and causing back pain. For stomach sleepers, the Puffy provides the best spine alignment. However, side sleepers need a softer mattress to cushion their spine and keep it aligned, making the Puffy Lux the better option.

Couples

Motion isolation is a factor that determines how well the mattress prevents movement on one side of the bed from transferring to the other side of the bed. If you and your partner don’t move around in your sleep much or if you sleep alone, then motion isolation probably isn’t the most important factor when it comes to choosing a new mattress.

But if you or your partner tend to switch sleeping positions a lot throughout the night, then you might want a mattress that does a good job at isolating motion. The Puffy is great for motion isolation because it is relatively firm.

How Construction Impacts The Feel of the Mattress

The Puffy mattress is made from three foam layers: the support layer is on the bottom, and it’s made of high-density polyfoam to give the mattress excellent structure and support. The transition layer is 2 inches of ClimateComfort foam which is specifically designed to help with temperature regulation. Then the top layer of the foam bed, also called the “comfort layer,” is 2 inches of gel memory foam that provides contouring and comfort.

The comfort layer in the Puffy Lux mattress is designed to adapt to your body and provide pressure relief in the areas where people need it most, like the shoulders, lower back and hips. Finally, the top layer is a cooling gel foam to ensure that the Puffy Lux sleeps as cool as possible.

The Puffy Royal is thick, plush and great for side sleepers who need softness on delicate pressure points like the shoulders and hips. However, stomach sleepers won’t find the support they need in the Puffy Royal’s plush layers.
