Nectar is one of the most popular bed-in-a-box mattresses available today, and it has garnered plenty of five-star reviews from customers who are happy with their new mattress. After all, the Nectar is an accommodating bed with a medium firmness setting (6/10 on our firmness scale), three foam layers and a great price point. Still, no mattress is perfect, so it’s important to understand what could go wrong with a Nectar mattress before you decide whether it’s right for you.

In this article, we cover the most common Nectar mattress complaints from actual shoppers. We dive into whether or not we think the complaints are valid and, when we think they are, offer some helpful alternatives. In this article, we’ll cover four common complaints about the Nectar mattress:

  1. Shipping Delays and Communication
  2. Off-Gassing Smells
  3. Customer Service
  4. Not Supportive Enough for Heavyweight Sleepers

Top Nectar Mattress Complaints

Shipping Delays and Communication

One of the main issues customers have with Nectar concerns shipping. Some Nectar customers have expressed concern over shipping delays and shipping dates that seem to change often. While Nectar’s website states that “the Nectar mattress ships in three to five business days” and “should arrive between three to five business days later,” some customer reviews mention waiting more than two weeks before hearing from Nectar Sleep about shipping.

Most companies have hiccups related to distribution processes from time to time, but the number of complaints related to shipping from Nectar Sleep mean it’s something to watch out for. One review of many on reads, “I placed an order a month ago and didn’t receive any email regarding my status until I reached out.”

Another reviewer on wrote that he’d received no correspondence about his order three weeks after the fact. Yet another mentioned that Nectar Sleep customer service representatives continually dodged questions regarding shipping time frames, delivery windows and order tracking.

  • Nectar Sleep sources its materials overseas and also outsources its construction internationally. While all final Nectar products are shipped from Washington, delays in receiving may occur from time to time, slowing down the delivery process as a whole. It’s difficult to say how often this occurs, but several customer reviews mention it.
  • If you haven’t received an email confirmation that your Nectar mattress has shipped, consider reaching out to Nectar’s customer service team. They can be reached by phone, via email, or through the chat window at The team is available seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. PST.
  • Consider purchasing your Nectar mattress from a third-party retailer, such as The Home Depot, Mattress Firm or Macy’s. If those companies have Nectar mattresses already available in their respective warehouses, your order may arrive faster since it’s not shipping directly from Nectar Sleep

Off-Gassing Smells

Almost all mattresses that are sold and shipped as a bed-in-a-box require a few days to air out after arriving and being unboxed. Similar to how new cars and shoes have a fresh, leathery smell after they’re purchased, some memory foam mattresses have a chemical smell that’s released when they’re first opened. The smell is a byproduct of how they’re produced (and unfortunately, it smells much less pleasant than leather).

Nectar has an entire page on its website dedicated to answering how much the Nectar mattress smells and how long the smell will last. According to the company, the smell should “dissipate after a few days” if your room has “good circulation.” Right before you grab scissors and release your bed-in-a-box from its shipping container, it’s worth opening a window and making sure a ceiling fan is whirring.

However, many Nectar complaints not only mention the unpleasant smell, but claim that it lasts for more than a few days. We’ve heard one account of a sleeper deciding to return their Nectar mattress after the off-gassing smell lingered for weeks.

  • Off-gassing smells primarily come from polyfoam. The material’s scent is enhanced when the bed is rolled and compressed for shipping. Most all-foam mattresses—particularly memory foam mattresses—have some sort of off-gassing smell that dissipates within a few days. However, if you’re really sensitive to smells, know that the Nectar’s odor might be a little stronger and linger longer than off-gassing in other foam beds.
  • The Nectar mattress does have a slight off-gassing smell, but if you leave the mattress in a well-ventilated space for 24 to 72 hours after it’s unpackaged, it shouldn’t be an issue for most people.
  • To expedite the off-gassing period, don’t put sheets on the mattress or sleep on the bed until you can no longer detect a smell. Also, consider increasing air circulation in the room by opening windows or using a fan.
  • Try sprinkling baking soda on the mattress, pillows and topper, then vacuum it up after an hour. Leave a bowl of white vinegar next to the bed, which absorbs any stray polyfoam particles in the air. Nectar recommends both of these solutions on its website.

Customer Service

Much of the appeal of purchasing a mattress online is discovering the generous policies that come with your purchase. Free shipping, free returns and long sleep trials are all typical in the online-order mattress industry. However, policies that look nice on the surface can turn into a headache if the brand doesn’t have an attentive and responsive customer service department.

Customer service departments effectively bring brand policies to life, helping orchestrate returns, solve customer problems and distribute issues among other teams in order to find the best solution. Unfortunately, some Nectar customers write that they are “seriously disappointed in [the Nectar] brand” for customer service-related issues such as long chat wait times, unanswered emails and phone calls, repeated requests for complaint filing and vague answers. has more than 19,000 reviews of the Nectar memory foam mattress on its website, and nearly all of them are at least four or five stars. However, the average review on and is just two stars. One review even mentions commenting on a Nectar Instagram photo with a complaint only to find the comment deleted several hours later.

  • Based on what we’ve read, it’s possible that Nectar is making promises that it can’t uphold: especially regarding sales, delivery times, quality and accessibility. Customer service issues may intensify during busy times in the mattress industry, such as Memorial Day, Labor Day and the holiday season (not to mention the COVID-19 pandemic). Still, we used the chat feature on Nectar’s website at around 11 a.m. on a Tuesday and got an answer within a minute or so.
  • If customer service is important to you, consider purchasing a similar all-foam mattress from a brand that has better ratings in this performance category. We’ve included a few recommendations for alternatives below.

Not Supportive Enough for Heavy Sleepers

Most sleeper types will sink into the Nectar mattress and experience great pressure relief. Still, heavyweight sleepers might find that it’s a little too plush, just like extra-petite individuals will experience it as a firmer mattress.

Most tall, obese and heavier body types require a firm mattress that can support their body weight in any sleeping position without sacrificing spinal alignment. Typically, the best mattresses for heavyweight sleepers are innerspring and hybrid mattresses that have supportive coils as a base layer.

The Nectar mattress has a medium to medium-firm setting (a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale) that’s best suited for lightweight and average-weight sleepers.

  • While mattress feel is subjective, a mattress’s support for various body types is not. Though the Nectar line of mattresses might feel comfortable for heavyweight sleepers for a night, they will probably not find proper long-term support on the Nectar mattress because of its medium setting and all-foam construction.
  • Heavyweight sleepers who like the feel of a neutral memory foam bed like the Nectar should consider a hybrid mattress that’s specifically designed for larger bodies but has thick foam comfort layers. The Saatva HD, WinkBed Plus, Helix Plus and Awara are all good options.

About Nectar Sleep

Nectar Sleep is a bed-in-a-box mattress company that has remained popular in the online mattress space. We’ve written extensively about the Nectar line of beds.

Members of our team who have tested the Nectar mattress will confirm its comfortable nature. Nectar also earns points by providing support, contouring and pressure relief for all sleeping positions, including side sleepers, stomach sleepers and back sleepers.

Why Choose the Nectar Mattress?

The Nectar memory foam mattress comes in a medium firmness level and has an accommodating, neutral foam feel. It also contains great features for the price, like a quilted cover and a cooling gel memory foam comfort layer. The bed also minimizes motion transfer. Because couples need a calm night of sleep without being awoken by a shifting partner, motion isolation is important for those sleepers. The edge support is above-average as well, so you can sleep right at the edge of the mattress without feeling like you’re going to roll off.

As far as the buying process goes, the price point for a Queen size Nectar mattress is often under $1,000 after discounts. The bed also comes with free shipping, a full year trial period and the company’s lifetime “Forever warranty.” Under Nectar’s return policy, you can send the bed back during the sleep trial period for a full refund if it doesn’t suit you. Our team loves the policies that accompany the Nectar mattress, especially because the 365-day trial period allows sleepers to test out their new mattress in every season of the calendar year.

The Bottom Line

We don’t think you have much to worry about when purchasing a bed-in-a-box mattress from Nectar Sleep, as long as you’re pretty sure it’s the best mattress for you. The biggest issue to worry about is running into an unhelpful customer representative, but the quality and comfort of the mattress is so high that it’s unlikely you’ll have trouble with it once it has arrived.

If you’re worried about ordering directly from, consider shopping at a third-party retailer that carries Nectar, like Amazon, Wal-Mart or Target. If you want to know more about this great memory foam bed, our full Nectar mattress review should help. We also recommend checking out our Nectar vs. Casper and Nectar vs. Purple mattress comparisons, as Purple and Casper are two more all-foam bed-in-a-box mattresses that you might enjoy.
