The Lull is a bed-in-a-box memory foam mattress with a medium-firm feel that provides excellent contouring and spinal alignment. The GhostBed is also an all-foam mattress, except it has a buoyant latex foam top layer and is a touch softer than the Lull.

As a medium-firm mattress with a memory foam design, the Lull is a good fit for couples who want motion isolation, back sleepers, lightweight (< 130 lbs) stomach sleepers, and average-weight (130–230 lbs) side sleepers. The GhostBed is also good for back sleepers, and the better choice for stomach sleepers and hot sleepers.

Comparing the Lull and GhostBed Mattresses

Key Differences

  • Feel: The Lull has a classic memory foam feel, including slow responsiveness and close body contouring. The GhostBed’s latex foam top layer gives it a slightly cooler, bouncier feel.
  • Suitability for Side and Stomach Sleepers: Despite the slightly firmer feel of the Lull mattress, it’s better than the GhostBed for strict side sleepers. In contrast, the GhostBed doesn’t allow as much sinkage around the hips, which makes it the better option for stomach sleepers
  • Temperature: The GhostBed is better for hot sleepers than the Lull mattress thanks to a breathable latex foam top layer that stores less body heat than memory foam.

Key Similarities

  • Support for Different Body Types: Both the Lull and GhostBed work best for people who weigh less than 230 lbs. Neither bed has the depth or design to adequately support most heavyweight sleepers (>230 lbs).
  • Good for Back Sleepers: The GhostBed and Lull are both medium-firm mattresses with the balance of support and cushioning needed by back sleepers
  • Motion Isolation: Thanks to the all-foam design of these beds, you won’t feel as much wiggle on them as you might on an innerspring or hybrid bed. Minimal motion transfer is an essential feature for couples who are sensitive to movement.

Who the Lull Mattress is Best For

Best For…

  • Couples and those who co-sleep: Memory foam mattresses like the Lull do a great job of stopping motion before it travels across the surface of the bed. Motion isolation can help you sleep more soundly if you share your bed with a child, partner, or pet.
  • Memory foam fans: Memory foam has a distinct feel, slowly responding to pressure and molding to the body. The Lull’s memory foam top layer delivers a relatively firm memory foam contouring sensation.
  • Side sleepers: Even though the Lull mattress is firmer than the average bed, it sinks beneath your pressure points just enough to keep your spine aligned. This is particularly true for average-weight sleepers.

May Not be Best For…

  • Stomach sleepers: The Lull mattress allows a little too much hip sinkage to keep most stomach sleepers’ spines aligned, especially for those who weigh over 130 lbs.
  • Heavyweight body types (>230 lbs): The Lull is a 10” thick all-foam bed. Without durable coils or high-density comfort layers, the Lull doesn’t provide enough support for bigger folks.
  • Hot sleepers: Memory foam mattresses have come a long way from the heat-trapping design they used to have, but they still tend to sleep warmer than average. Lull infuses their memory foam with cooling gel to counteract any heat retention, but it still may sleep too warm for some folks.

Who the GhostBed Mattress is Best For

Best For…

  • Back sleepers: The GhostBed’s firmness level is well suited to the supine sleep position. The softer latex foam comfort layer provides pressure relief, while the firmer memory foam layer below supports the spine.
  • Couples who sleep hot: The GhostBed’s all-foam design means little movement transfer, while the top latex layer leads to cooler sleep than most foam mattresses.
  • Sleepers who toss and turn: Latex is known for its responsiveness, meaning it quickly bounces back to shape when you move around. People who move around a lot won’t feel stuck in the GhostBed when repositioning.

May Not be Best For…

  • Heavyweight (>230 lbs) sleepers: Those with heavyweight body types are likely to sink through the comfort layers and hit the firm base layer, which is as uncomfortable as it sounds.
  • People who like to be hugged by their mattress: The GhostBed’s latex foam top layer doesn’t have the same plush, cradling feel like memory foam. The latex does contour to your body, but without the “embrace” of memory foam.
  • Side sleepers: Even with a medium-firm feel, we noticed significant pressure buildup around our testers’ shoulders and hips.

Lull Mattress vs. GhostBed Mattress Performance Differences

Firmness / Feel

Lull Performance By Sleeping Position:

Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  5 3 3
Average weight (130–230 lbs): 5 3 4
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  3 2 4

GhostBed Performance By Sleeping Position:

Body Type: BACK SLEEPERS STOMACH SLEEPERS SIDE SLEEPERS
Lightweight (< 130 lbs):  4 4 2
Average weight (130–230 lbs): 4 4 3
Heavyweight (> 230 lbs):  2 3 2

1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent

Firmness is one of the most important mattress features to consider when shopping for your next bed. To make comparisons simple, we rate mattress firmness on a 1–10 scale, with 10 being extra-firm.

The GhostBed is a 6/10 on the firmness scale, and the Lull is a 7/10, making each a medium-firm mattress. To figure out which bed is best for you, you should consider how much you weigh and your sleeping position

Back and stomach sleepers usually prefer a medium-firm or firmer mattress, while side sleepers are more comfortable on something softer. Additionally, stomach sleepers require more support than back sleepers along their hips, which can dip out of alignment on soft mattresses. When it comes to body size, lighter folks typically require something softer than heavier people.

Both beds’ medium-firm firmness levels make them good mattresses for back sleepers and lightweight stomach sleepers. Contrary to what we expected, the slightly firmer Lull offers better pressure relief for side sleepers, and the softer GhostBed keeps stomach sleepers’ hips better lifted.

Motion Isolation

Old-school innerspring mattresses all have one thing in common: abundant motion transfer. If you share your mattress, excess movement can make a good night’s sleep hard to attain. Fortunately, all-foam beds like the GhostBed and Lull lack responsive coils, making them both good mattresses for couples

Despite both beds having similar motion-dampening base layers, the Lull’s memory foam top layer makes it even better for sensitive sleepers. Memory foam has a slow response to movement, so it absorbs motion at the spot. The latex foam along the GhostBed’s surface has a slight bounce to it, so you may feel a touch more wiggle when your partner moves around.

Edge Support

The GhostBed outperformed the Lull during our edge support test, though neither bed felt especially secure. If you frequent the sides of your bed—whether sitting or sleeping—look for a mattress with reinforced edges.

Pressure Relief

The softer the mattress, the more give there is along the surface at areas like the hips, shoulders, and lower back. This cushion helps ease pain or discomfort at pressure points for side sleepers

The GhostBed’s top layer is less pressure-relieving than the Lull’s, meaning that the Lull is better for side sleepers. If pressure relief is especially important to you, check out our best mattresses for side sleepers.

Spine Alignment

A mattress that supports proper spinal alignment works to prevent or reduce back pain. To achieve the best posture at night, you need a bed that works well for your body type and sleeping position

Both the GhostBed and Lull do a good job providing lumbar support to back sleepers. The top layers are just soft enough for the hips to gently sink in, while the firmer layers beneath keep the rest of the spine propped up. If you’re an average-weight stomach sleeper, the GhostBed will keep your hips lifted better than the Lull. Either mattress keeps lightweight stomach sleepers’ hips aligned, but heavyweight sleepers should check out our best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

The Lull supports better side sleeper alignment because it keeps the shoulders and hips from bunching up and supports a straight neck-to-tailbone alignment.

Durability

The Lull and GhostBed both contain high-quality materials that make them more durable than the average all-foam bed. Between the two, we expect the GhostBed to outlast the Lull thanks to latex’s ability to resist softening and body impressions better than memory foam.

Temperature

Hot sleepers need a mattress that helps dissipate excess body heat. The GhostBed is cooler than the Lull due to a top layer that’s more breathable and naturally temperature-regulating. With that said, if you find most mattresses too warm, you might prefer the airflow of an innerspring or hybrid mattress for maximum comfort.

Lull Mattress Construction

Cover Soft, Breathable Cover
Comfort Layer  Gel Memory Foam (1.5″)
Transitional Layer High-Resilience Foam (1.5″)
Support Layer Durable Polyfoam Base Layer (7″)
Mattress Thickness  10″

The Lull is a supportive memory foam mattress. When you lie along the surface, the memory foam gently cradles the body without being overly soft. This top layer contains a cooling gel that reduces heat retention. The second foam layer is firm and supportive, helping to keep the spine aligned. Finally, a durable high-density polyfoam (aka polyurethane foam) layer dampens motion transfer and improves the bed’s stability.

Cover Smooth, Stretchy Cover
Comfort Layer  Cooling Latex Foam (1.5″)
Transitional Layer Gel Memory Foam (2″)
Support Layer High-Density Base Foam (7.5″)
Mattress Thickness  11″

The GhostBed starts with an upper latex foam layer that quickly springs back to shape when pressure is removed, creating more bounce than you might expect on a foam mattress. This layer has a medium feel that conforms to the curves of your body. A memory foam transition layer cradles the heavier parts of your body. Finally, a dense foam base enhances the mattress’s durability.

Shipping and Returns for Lull & GhostBed

Lull

Lull offers generous shipping, return, and warranty policies. Customers living in the continental U.S. receive free shipping, with customers in Alaska and Hawaii responsible for a portion of the cost that Lull pays to ship to those states. There will probably be a mild odor, known as off-gassing, that will fade within a few days.

Once your new mattress arrives at your home, you have a full year to sleep on it before deciding if you want to keep it. This year-long sleep trial is much longer than the standard 100-night trial, which allows you to experience your new bed during every season.

Lull mattresses come with a Lifetime warranty that isn’t prorated. For as long as you own the Lull, you can file a warranty claim for defects and have Lull pay to replace or repair your mattress.

GhostBed

GhostBed is another online mattress brand that ships its beds in a box for easy maneuvering. Customers in the contiguous U.S. don’t pay for shipping, but anyone in Hawaii or Alaska will be charged a $600 freight shipping cost. Similar to the Lull, the new GhostBed has a slight scent that should dissipate quickly.

GhostBed mattresses have a 101-night trial period and a 20-year warranty. If you decide the GhostBed isn’t the right fit, you can return it for a full refund, but only after you have tried to bed for at least 30 nights.

The GhostBed mattress warranty is prorated, which means that after year 10 of ownership you pay for part of the cost to replace or repair the bed if it’s defective.

Our Final Take

The Lull’s firmer memory foam construction is surprisingly more pressure-relieving than the GhostBed, so it’s better for side sleepers. We also favor it for couples concerned about motion transfer. If you need a little more support or sleep hot, the GhostBed is the better choice. It’s also better for stomach sleepers. Back sleepers can go with either bed. If pricing is top of mind for you, you’ll save on the Lull.
